It's a Wonderful Organissimo Board
Free For All replied to ghost of miles's topic in Forums Discussion
1) Jim's had it, board is toast 2) Members unite, send major bread and moral support 3) Board gets reprieve, lives to fight another day 4) Some members don't like each other but call (temporary) truce 5) Epilogue: everything is beautiful once again A Quinn Martin Production -
It's in Eb like an alto, but deep like a tenor. You'd be surprised how many "foo-foo" alto players sound like real men on bari. But that Eb thing...that's weird. It's a Bb & C world, and everybody else is just living in it. But the ones who strike hard in Eb strike REALLY hard, so maybe it's a trap that'll either fuck you up or set you all the way free, I don't know. But Eb....man...I can't think right in Eb. Eb tunes lay well for us bass-cleffers. Bird tunes are in an excellent range. Plus I can play an Eb part by just changing the clef to bass and adding a couple accidentals. Clifford's (and other Bb) tunes are usually too low/high and need to be transposed up a fourth or so. Joy Spring is fun to blow over, but the head is a nightmare on trombone. Too low to effectively cop all the ornamentations, but too high if you 8VA it.

Jack Teagarden, "Accent on Trombone" (Urania)
Free For All replied to Bol's topic in Recommendations
Just got this in the mail today. Great side, thanks to Bol and the others for their recommendation! I've discovered so much great music because of this board. Glad it's not going anywhere just yet! -
I'm just glad he gave us "The Duke" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" to play and listen to. Both great tunes.

Eddie De Haas is also on Chris Connor's album, "Chris in person", which was done at the Village Vanguard. Hard to imagine a musician who's played the VV being regarded as unknown in a jazz context. The other members of the band were Kenny Burrell, Bill Rubenstein and Lex Humphreys. MG Eddie De Haas is all over the place if you start looking a bit closer! Like for instance he's on the three Steeplechase Vonski albums that I'm playing this afternoon! (And no, not Vonski + yurepean pick-up band but Jodie Christian, Wilbur Campbell and De Haas.) One would expect from a site providing "general overview" such as AMG that they indeed realize such things... but then I guess the individuals who actually are writing up the short texts on albums don't exaclty have that greater perspective that would be nice to see on such a site... I worked with Eddie (as well as Wilbur and Jodie) a lot when I lived in Chicago. Eddie is a great player and a very cool guy. I wonder how he's doing?

The best way to make it stop is by refusing to acknowledge it.

And then later on he can work at Domino's.

It's been nice to see some members who have been MIA lately come out to support the cause. -

I love hot dogs but try to avoid them these days because they are so high-calorie/high fat. Fat-free franks suck, I'm sorry. The Hebrew Nationals were/are quite tasty. The fully-loaded Chicago dog was/is a favorite. Vienna Beef, of course. Gold Coast, Petrillo's, Superdawg, Demon Dog Healthy Choice makes some turkey smoked sausage and kielbasa that are actually pretty good, and much lower in calories. Not the REAL thing, but closer than most. -
So did any of our board members from the northwest have any problems with the nasty superstorm out there?
-
Glad to hear you're doing well, Bruce! Lots to get caught up on around here!

One of my favorites. ....and two of my favorites:

Make sure you order it that way when you go to Chicago! -

That would be great! I'd love to see it happen. Can I bring my axe? So, let's say 2K per year operating costs. Among 50 members that would be $40 a year. Among 100 it would be $20. I see no problem in making that happen! -

You know, as far as the finances go, that may be all it takes. Maybe there could be a support group of regulars (volunteer) who could be sent a mass PM with financial updates/status. If we're too far in the red, those members can bring it up on the board. A "gentle reminder", as it were. That would be better than a donation request thread that no one evers reads. -

I spend a lot of time here, post frequently and hang out in live chat regularly, so I'll make a more substantial donation (I have done so in the past). I wouldn't expect occasional users to chip in as much. I think we can do this via the honor sysytem, although it obviously hasn't been working so far. I think many have intended to contribute but simply never got around to it. I think the fact we have gotten close to the edge will perhaps encourage more to ante up. I'm sure we can pull together to deal with the immediate crisis, but sustaining the support is what will be critical. Time for everyone to step up. There are so many members, if everyone gives what they consider a fair share, it will add up quickly. Some can't afford to give much, some can but haven't done so. In any case we need to step up and take the load off Jim. If we can be aware of the status of the "kitty" we can keep things going instead of having to reach crisis mode. If the 40-50 regulars become aware of a lack of funds, I think we can take care of it pretty quickly. I'm in! This place is worth the effort! -

Worth the trouble ....and if you have one of those waffle makers where you flip it over, so much the better. -
