  1. Well, even though you guys think it's not good, I'm still curious!
  2. Is that the same as "one brick short of a load"?
  3. Fedchock just sent me a copy- it's excellent. Some very interesting versions of Embreaceable You, Moment's Notice, Alfie's Theme et al. I'll look forward to your comments, John!
  4. Having long been a fan of Miles' soundtrack, I've been curious to see the film with the music in context. I bought the Criterion version- it's a two disc set which contains extras including interviews with the director, actors and sesssion pianist Rene Urtreger, footage of Miles and Louis Malle from the soundtrack recording session, a new video about the score w/Gary Giddins and Jon Faddis and a student film by Malle called Crazeology, featuring the Parker tune. I just got it, haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but it looks pretty good.
  5. Wow. I had NO chance of getting THAT right! Guy, you really bring a lot of valuable information to this board (in addition to your charming personality!). Thank you!
  6. How do you pronounce "Humair"? I've always said "You-Mare", or is it "Hue-Mare", or something else entirely? Regardless, I do love his playing! Wow, I just looked up his bio and he's nearly 70! Is he still active? He's sure participated in a lot of great music over his lifetime.
  7. A little shameless self-promotion, please indulge me..... John and I will be performing at the Green Mill in Chicago on Friday, March 30th and Saturday, March 31st. With us will be Jeremy Kahn, piano, Kelly Sill, bass and Tim Davis, drums. We'll also be at the Blue Room in KC on Monday, April 2nd. In KC we'll have Roger Wilder, piano, Bob Bowman, bass and Tim Davis on drums. It's the Blue 'n Green tour! I've been looking forward to this for a long time....John and I have a lot of fun playing together. It will be more trombone than you could possibly want to hear. But in a good way. I hope to see some board members at both venues! Please come and say hello, I'll buy you a beer! Thanks, Paul

  9. For some reason this reminded me of Frank Rosolino's death, I guess because it happened to someone who posessed a great sense of humor. As most know, Frank was very funny and entertaining and few would have predicted his suicide, and especially that he would take the life of one of his children and leave the other one permanantly handicapped. I'm fairly certain there was also some additional "chemical" influence on Frank at the time other than just the depression from which he was suffering. As much as I still love his playing, it makes me sad to hear him and wonder what's going on under the surface. I was also a big fan of Richard Jeni. Also Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedberg and Lenny Bruce. Some others who went away too soon.
  10. I was very sorry to hear about this. I really enjoyed his act and the various HBO specials and movies in which he appeared. I'm sorry he was unhappy/depressed enough to make this choice. RIP.
  11. From the "cool t-shirt slogan thread, courtesy of Dan....
  12. I quite like it. You're not a fan, I take it. I must say, I thought that he did a great job singing an incredibly difficult melody! I was ready to hate it, but dammit, he did a good job! He nailed those intervals, not an easy task.
  13. Almost 12 hours into the thread and no sign of the Rooster. Hope he's OK. "Future Passed", was it, RT?
  14. I don't have this, and it looks damn fine. Also looks like it's OOP, used copies are quite expensive. This reminds me that I also need to get Earl Hines solo piano twofer of Duke tunes. Looks like you hit the mother lode Al!
  15. Conrad Herwig and Brian Lynch recently put out a new recording in the vein of their "Latin Side of Miles and Coiltrane" series that presents arrangements of the tunes of Sketches of Spain. Just got it, haven't listened yet, will report soon.
  16. Thanks everyone! I had a nice evening. Hung out with some friends visiting from out-of-town, heard Conrad Herwig and Brian Lynch with their "Latin side of Trane/Miles" group. Got fairly toasted over the course of the evening- martinis, sake, beer and drambuie (or however you spell it). I'm still standin' though! FYI Herb, Steve Cardenas was at the Blue Room last night as part of Ben Allison's midwest tour. He was absolutely killin', BTW. Thanks again for all your support folks! Paul
  17. Tom, guessing from the vintage I'd say either Greg Herbert or Steve Lederer.
  18. ....can't speak for her, though......
  19. Well, thankfully I'm not in THIS frame of mind.....
  20. Here's a good one. Where to make the first cut?
  21. That is about the UGLIEST MF cake I've ever seen!
