  1. I think Rooster's BFT may win the Pulitzer. :rsmile:
  2. Wow, I didn't even start playing until I was, like, 10. So you were groovin' when you were one?
  3. You're exactly right, *experience* is the best teacher. That's part of the "listening, learning and practicing" process. ...but there is also the time you spend preparing to play with others- learning your axe, learning tunes (and theory ) and studying recordings.
  4. Dude, you're like 16, right? You've got a little time left to get out and find some like-minded people to hang with. In the meantime, work to become the best musician you can be. This is the time to be listening, practicing and learning. Bitching and moaning comes later!
  5. Jazz Kat: Everyone's journey is different. It's a tough way to make a living- you have to learn to balance artistic integrity with the realities of paying the bills and the indignities inherent to the music business in general. It's not for everyone, that's for sure. There are a lot of players competing for too few jobs, so you have to have it on the ball as a player/writer/bandleader/businessman etc. Now in case I sound discouraging, let me also add that the rewards can make it all worth it. Everyone's journey is different.
  6. Mike, all I can add is "never say never". Maybe you do need a change; take some time away from the music to contemplate your situation. You never know what might yet come your way, music or otherwise! Whatever you decide, I hope you continue to let us know what's up, and know that you have a lot of supportive friends here.
  7. Probably the Charlie Parker Aebersold play-along. I was obsessed w/that one when I was first learning to play bop heads and changes. I still use it frequently. As far as regular music CDs, it would probably be a Miles; Miles Smiles, KOB, Jazz at the Plaza, ESP, Milestones, or maybe Cannonball's Somethin' else.
  8. Has anyone mentioned that this is just the nature of the internet? B-) So we're cantakerous AND we hide behind the anonymity of our screen names? Man, what a bunch of f*ckin' losers.
  9. ...or you could buy 5 Evans Verve boxes and keep the least rusty one.
  10. I really love this one. Wheeler's writing and arranging sounds like no one else. You can order a book of scores including the material from this recording. Great stuff to study. Also, here's a LINK to the AMG review of the 1976 recording akanalog was asking about.
  11. ...of course I have one already!! ..................................................................couldja make it $50?
  12. Well, if you're a JJ fan, go the extra mile and purchase the Mosaic box. It has the Dial JJ session plus many more. Well worth the bread. There are many things to like about these 50s/60s JJ recordings. The bands are great (in this case Bobby Jaspar, Tommy Flanagan, Wilbur Little and Elvin Jones) and the arrangements are top-notch, much more than the usual head-and-solos format. And of course, JJ is in top form. No problem recommending this one.
  13. Why, I'd buy 76.982294 copies of Boogaloo Sisters! Whatever else could one possibly want? .........................................................................Jim, can I borrow 20 bucks?
  14. Oliver Nelson Stan Kenton Maynard Ferguson
  15. That's good to know. I used to feel bad about being rude to someone who's just doing their job, probably for minimum pay, and I used to wait until they paused for a response to say no, but now I just interrupt and say "no thanks" and hang up. Screening calls is the main reason we keep an answering machine- worth its weight in gold, as is caller ID.
  16. I think, as others have mentioned, that the name one chooses to represent oneself is irrelevant. Who knows what's truthful? I can honestly say what I post here is representative of who I am and what I know (and what I don't know B-) ), but how is anyone else to know whether that's true? That's the inherent flaw of communicating via the internet- it's easy to deceive people and misrepresent yourself. AFAIC, though, the potential benefits of getting to know the amazing people here, to me, totally outweigh any concerns about matters of trust. I think the best way to decide who's who is to hang out here for a while, read posts and make up your own mind. My feeling is that everyone starts out with a "blank slate" and what they choose to susequently post determines the level of interest and/or respect they receive. Besides, there are so many experts here that anyone offering up a heaping helping of BS gets busted pretty quick! I think the system polices itself pretty effectively. ...and welcome to the board!
  17. Woody Shaw played cornet frequently- check out the photos at his website.
  18. Which one did you end up getting, Shawn? I'm contemplating taking the plunge myself, but I don't want to spend too much $$.
  19. Someone have a case of *Phoenix envy*?
  20. One very good thing about Tennessee.....
  21. Thanks Mike- I'm all over this! $16 and change at Amazon.
  22. My guess would have been Ab.
  23. Great! Some great stuff there; I know nothing about Freddie Slack, though I do remember there was a discussion about him here. The others I will definitely be all over.
  24. I plan on picking it up out of curiousity. I can't imagine what the jams will sound like, though. Her shows are seldom disappointing. The Bill Evans show is a must-have, BTW. Really great IMHO.
