  1. I (as a trombonist of the slide variety) am certainly aware of the dismissal of valve trombonists as "cheaters" or just "inferior" trombonists. I happen to think of the valve trombone as an entirely different instrument (with its own set of advantages/disadvantages) and I always can tell the difference between the two on a recording. Check out "Our Love Is Here To Stay" on the Mosaic JJ box (or on the "Dial JJ" recording)-that ain't no slide trombone he's playing; actually it's not a valve trombone either....... I have no hostility towards Tizol or Brookmeyer or McConnell or Enevoldsen or Fahn etc.- they're just as unpopular as slide trombonists are! Actually, I enjoy Brookmeyer's playing quite a bit- he can develop motives like a mofo. Not a bad writer either. But the point is taken, BB really shouldn't be on this list; there should be a separate list for the button-pushers. BTW, I voted for Slide. I'm confused by polls like this- are we choosing based on life's work or current prowess? Curtis is the current leader, but I don't think he is playing as well as Slide right now, yet he has a more impressive resume, having been the only trombonist to record in a small group w/Trane and Bud Powell.
  2. I've been debating whether or not to switch to my real name, but I think there would be too many Paul M, John S, Jeff B etc. and to me that would be both confusing and boring. I use my first name on my signature line, and I think that's good enough; besides, anyone who knows me around here knows my full name. I guess I'll just have to live with being "forgettable" to Mike Fitzgerald and "sans cojones" to others........
  3. Just FYI montq, this indeed a great session, but it's NOT part of the Mosaic. Recently RVGd though.
  4. I just received the book of BOTC scores that Mike Fitzgerald recommended. They look great- all in concert key, so analysis doesn't require transposition (which is desirable for some). I'd also recommend this book for anyone who wants to further delve into this great music. $16.50 or so at Amazon.
  5. I'm hearing voices right now.
  6. Is there Rhodes on New Perspective?
  7. From Seinfeld: Telemarketer: Hi. Would you be interested in switching over to TMI Long Distance service? Seinfeld: Oh, gee, I can’t talk right now. Why don’t you give me your home number and I’ll call you later. Telemarketer: Uh, sorry, we’re not allowed to do that. Seinfeld: Oh, I guess you don’t want people calling you at home. Telemarketer: No. Seinfeld: Well, now you know how I feel. Busted! No soup for you........NEXT!!!
  8. By the way, just noticed the title. Dexter Grodon? Sound like a case of dexlexia to me.
  9. Anything in particular you'd recommend Allen? Or Lon? I have heard of him, but have not heard him play.
  10. So was Bill Rank the name you were looking for?
  11. Oops! I stand corrected. Thanks Nate! EDIT: Jazz Kat, go HERE to sign up.
  12. The person who chooses the AOTW also chooses the next person to pick. If you're interested, make it known here, or perhaps PM the current person (although they might have someone in mind already). Should be no problem in gaining a turn.
  13. When you meet him he frequently does the Euro kiss-on-each-cheek greeting, which is certainly endearing. He also wears a lot of cologne (it's not at all unpleasant, it's just that there's a lot of it!) and so after the greeting you are semi-permanently annointed with the scent. It was stuck in my coat for weeks! And I didn't even care.
  14. .......and whiskers on kittens.....
  15. Two exciting OT games tonight!
  16. Let's hope it's not just 500 posts of " "
  17. Maybe you could convince the landlord to take half the amount, until your paycheck comes?
  18. And remember, you can't spell R-A-M-E-N without M-A-R-E-N!!
  19. Yes, happy Easter everyone! ....and don't ruin your appetite with these.........
  20. It never hurts to contact the people/institutions you owe money to and try to work something out. Many of them would rather accept a temporarily reduced payment than have you default entirely. And drive carefully! Good luck! You will weather this storm!
  21. I'll say thanks for picking this one. It had been sitting on the shelf for a while and it was nice to listen to it again. Plus, in the ensuing discussion I found out the scores were available (should arrive on Monday!!)!! Good pick!
  22. Mike, I lived in Austin through much of the 80s (grad school at UT) and while it was a great music town overall, the jazz aspect of the music scene was pretty minimal. Not too much happening at all. Is it any better now? I can see how a jazz musician could get discouraged there.
  23. I once heard Weather Report on a porn soundtrack. .....I mean...uh....a FRIEND told me he heard Weather Report on a porn soundtrack; yeah, that's it! ....and no, it wasn't Cucumber Slumber.
