  1. I don't know, could you ASK something more than "Bad or Good"? Fre. How about "I don't like their music in particular or that genre in general." You obviously like them a lot, and that's great, but I hope you didn't come here (of all places) expecting everyone to agree with you. I do like other kinds of music than jazz, but I really don't like the Dixie Chicks.
  2. Oh! Oh! I know this one!! ***BAD***
  3. There are so many. Stormy Weather Get Happy (Rollins Vanguard version ) World on a String Let's Fall in Love I've Got a Right to Sing the Blues Come Rain or Come Shine Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea One for My Baby Paper Moon (Blakey version ) That Old Black Magic and, of course Over the Rainbow.

  5. The thread title made me think of this. Is that wrong?
  6. Six out of how many?
  7. Thanks Mike...........better to get it there.
  8. If you are interested in the Evanescence scores they are nicely collected in THIS BOOK.................seems to be on back order right now though.....
  9. Nice to hear from you, Frank!

Sangrey, what are your feelings about the Webster/Byas side? Am I missing something? Just curious.

In that case I wish they'd made this recording ten or so bottles earlier.

I had high hopes when I bought this CD years ago, but I also was disappointed. I wish they had made this recording ten or so years earlier.
  13. This tune is the only one of Maria's I've had the chance to play. The piano part may be the toughest big band chart I've ever had to read. That's one of the great things about her writing- each voice has a purpose and contributes to the whole. You'll rarely see a piano or guitar part with just changes (like so many other big band charts); there will most likely be written-out sections where the piano functions like another voice in the ensemble instead of just comping at will all the time.
  14. My favorite cut is one that didn't get mentioned in Alon's review- Last Season. This ones builds so beautifully, and Werner, Tim Hagans and Tim Ries all play great solos. Evanescence contains what is probably the most conventional big-band type of writing (of all of her recordings), IMHO. It's interesting to listen to Maria's development in the subsequent recordings., and how her compositions and orhestrations have evolved. I think of CITG as the most "orchestral" in nature of them all. I like them all, and even though Evanescence and CITG are conceptually worlds apart, both bear Maria's distinct signature.
  15. Me too, although I'm sorry for our man Phil Kelly. Seems like this is a situation where it would have been nice to now be able to pick up her CD in a store (for the new fans she's apt to get). Many stores will be having "Grammy winner" displays now. Who knows, maybe this will help the artistShare thing to take off even more. Sure can't hurt.
  16. Here ya go my man!
  17. You can always count me in to hang w/the cooking threads. I started a couple but they always seem to flounder after a few posts (MMMM...FLOUNDER..). I love to improvise on certain dishes like soups, chili and stir-fry. I think the main lesson I've learned is to not go overboard with seasoning. Keeping it simple has yielded better results.
  18. Get 'em all. All worth owning. I particularly like the Cannonball and of course the Rosolino.

I've always liked the Black Lion stuff. I first heard him on the Smithsonian Collection; that version of I Got Rhythm with Slam Stewart smokes. Was there more released from that concert? I thought there was at least one more tune- Indiana maybe?
  20. Yeah, if that was the reason it was OK.
  21. I think passing at the age of 43 was a contributing factor.
  22. A Club Supreme..... A Club Supreme..... A Club Supreme.....
  23. Girl From Ipanema A great tune that's been almost rendered impotent by Muzak.
