Glad you're OK, Alexander (and the other person too)!!! Everything else is fixable. It's a pain to deal with the subsequent hassles, but at least everyone is OK. Hopefully all parties will deal with this with honesty and integrity. Sorry you had to go through that. I'll bet you're still a little shocky from it all. Tell me, what's it like having those airbags go off in your face? That's got to be a little insane. A lot of people get black eyes, etc., which is of course better than going through the windshield. Don't sweat it- these things happen.

Thank you for clarifying that. I was wondering a bit. I can't go to sleep listening to music- it keeps my mind too active. I need the drone-like sound. And I don't mean Kenny G.

... or send her my way. Yes, in many ways it's the perfect relationship- she buys you Mosaic sets, yet frequently travels abroad, leaving you to listen to tunes and eat tater tots. Or whatever your "bachelor food of choice" is.

Since we moved into our new house, we've been sleeping really well. It's a very quiet neighborhood, and (because of the winter sun position) the bedrooms are dark like Vegas hotel rooms- you can sleep 'til noon and it's pitch black in there. I LOVE that. It's getting harder to get a good night's sleep when I travel. I just want want to be in my own bed all the time. Does anyone else need some kind of ambient noise when they sleep? I'm not talking about Vince Guaraldi - I mean something like a fan or a radio, tv (I use an air purifier at home as a noise-producer). I can't sleep in a QUIET room- I need some kind of distracting sound, so I don't have to listen to my ears ring, or my thoughts run amuck. My wife's ideal sleeping scenario- well, let's just say I refer to that as "the crypt"- no sound, no light and HOT. That's why we have two bedrooms. We both believe a good night's sleep on a regular basis makes for a healthy marriage.

Yet here you are, wide awake at 2:19 AM! B)

Make sure you take that woman out for a nice dinner/date!

When left to my own devices I'll stay up 'til 3 or so, as you can see by this post. Usually by then the domestic membership thins out and our friends across the pond start their day. Once school starts and I start adjuncting, I'll hang it up at 12 or 1. My wife hits the sack (and we all know how painful that can be) around 11, so that's when I put on the tunes and get online, or try to write/work on music projects.

The "big games" have been very disappointing recently. The BCS was a joke, the World Series was anti-climactic and the Super Bowl looks to be a snoozer. And I'm not saying that just because of the Chiefs/Cubs folding. I hope those who like the teams that make it to the Super Bore enjoy the game, and I wish them luck (conn! ). I just pray it's at least an exciting game. I'll be looking forward to the commercials. Anyone here planning big SB parties? I usually make up a batch o'chili and jalapeno cornbread. Unless it's a nice day, in which case I may break out my new Cabela's smoker and do up a pork loin. And beer of course- I'm thinking Shiner Bock this year. C'mon over- I just set up the surround sound.

Check it out I love this one. Apparently they think it's a lame trio recording or something. "....not a lot of development in the solos......." No review AND wrong album cover pictured. Are these guys still gonna start charging for using their site? Big mistake.

Damn you and your connections, Lon! That's great news about the extra cuts on Blues in Orbit. I'll be looking forward to that one. Sorry I blew up. Tell DL at Tower I said hi.

I'll re-guess the 17th at 4:30 Central time. Definitely. Definitely the 17th at 4:30. I'm a very good driver. Definitely the 17th. At 4:30.

What do you do after you're home from the gig?

What's a "gig"? -
Dennis Dotson is probably best known for his work with Woody's band. He owned Stapleton's "Come Rain or Come Shine" chart. Didn't DEEP record that on his new CD with Dennis playing the solo? Ron Stout played the shit out that chart too, also on Woody's band. Both of these guys are lyrical, melodic players that I never tire of listening to. I think Dotson still lives near Houston- is it Wheeler or something like that? Any of you Texas guys ever cross paths with him? Ron lives in LA and has worked/recorded with Bill Holman and Horace Silver. An amazing player who loves to play in the low end of the trumpet. Neither one is as well known as they should be. What Phil, no trombones? Or is "underrated trombonist" redundant?

Looks like today will be the day. I'll guess 1:35 PM Central time.

I'm looking forward to her next one- "Tastes Like Chicken".

And you make it so. So somebody finally organized them into a website. Cool. I love the Orson Welles. The bass player Jay Anderson uses bytes from these tapes as tune titles. He's got one called IN July. And Most Folks.

After reading all these great recommendations, it seems to me that there aren't a whole lot of ways to go wrong with Getz. Different periods have different general moods and some personnel combinations click a bit more than others (and of course some recordings are of better quality if that matters to you) but THE SOUND carries through it all. When I teach and do clinics, I prioritize the most important elements of playing jazz as 1) SOUND and 2) TIME. This is just my opinion, but to me everything else is dependent on these fundamentals being in place. Getz can have a less-than-perfect day or be playing with a less-than-perfect rhythm section but THE SOUND will still make it happen, and his TIME always feels right to me. He's one of those who I expect could make lesser players play better. I read the biography, I know he was a real jerk at times, but I try to let the music speak for itself. For people like him, that's when the beauty within came out. Think of all the greats- you could probably identify them quicker from their sound than anything else- Pops, Prez, Hawk, Eldridge, Dizzy, Bird, JJ, Miles, Trane, Morgan, Shorter, Ornette etc. Sound is what it's all about, IMHO.

In addition to those, I'm looking forward to the new release of Blues in Orbit. I've always liked that one and I'll be curious to see if there's any extra material.

The quote originated on the tape where Buddy is threatening to turn all the microphones off and make the band play w/o them. ".....we'll see how they do UP there.....WITHOUT all the assistance!" The Seinfeld episode is the one where "Banya" (the lame comic who does the bit on Ovaltine- "It's gold, Jerry.....gold!") is riding Jerry's coattails and benefitting from Jerry warming up the audience. So Jerry decides to take a dive (replete with dated rainbow suspenders) and says ".....now we'll see how he does UP there....WITHOUT all the assistance!". Exact same inflections. They obviously had heard the tapes (I know that's true, a friend of a friend got to meet him while playing at a party in NY and asked him about it- Jerry's response was "Oh yeah, we've got all that stuff!"). Have you ever heard the Col. Sanders outtakes? I swear George quoted from them once, but I can't remember which episode. Wild, wacky stuff. :rsmile:

Wow, there's something distinctly Freudian about that. I'm not sure what, though.

and we're off........................... "Fables of Linus" "Lucy's Blue Skylight" "Don't Be Afraid, Brown's Afraid Too" "Something Like A Dog" I just love "what ifs".

In addition to those already mentioned, I also enjoy: Focus (w/Sauter-Finegan) The Peacocks (w/Jimmy Rowles) Bob Brookmeyer and Friends (w/Getz, Gary Burton, Elvin, Herbie and Ron Carter) Pure Getz Serenity People Time (the late duets w/Kenny Barron- very expessive, poignant Getz)

I just read that King Pleasure's real name was "Clarence Beeks", something I didn't know. Then I remembered that "Clarence Beeks" was a character in the movie "Trading Places". You know, the bad guy who ended up in the gorilla costume. Talk about an obscure reference that 99% of the audience probably missed. I wonder whose idea that was- I might guess Ackroyd; I think he was involved in the writing of the script, and he seems to enjoy that type of inside joke. OK, here's another one. I don't know if this has been discussed before, but there was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry quoted directly from one of the Buddy Rich tapes. Anyone (who has heard the Buddy tapes) remember that one?

Now that is a cool word!
