  1. It's held 25 miles right down the road from me. I know they book it way way in advance. I'll see if I can find some information for you guys.
  2. You guys need to get out in the sun more often!
  3. Hey, I'll be the first one in line! I'd love to be able to take a train to work. I get tired of the 40 mile schlep every day. One of the things I loved most about living in NYC was the public transportation.
  4. Back in the Summer of 1997 and for a bit in 2000, I worked for a woman in New York City (Battery Park City) who handled the US marketing and promotion for the swiss label TCB. She also managed (and still manages) several jazz musicians, including Teri Thornton (RIP), Howard Johnson, Lynne Arrriale and Jerome Richardson (RIP). It was an awesome gig. I almost moved to NYC in 2000, but things didn't pan out. It was a blast!
  5. I'm the Assistant Coordinator of Technical Services for The State of Tennessee's Online Degree Programs. I just started this job last year. Here is my list of prior jobs. 6. Another one I picked up today. This is one of the better pop records of the last 10-15 years. Such a shame that Buckley won't be around to make any more music. He had a lot to say. 2 discs, plus 1 DVD.
  7. I have the Gaye - What's Goin' On Deluxe Edition and it's amazing. The 'Detroit Mix' is absolutely mind blowing. Another Motown release has caught my eye... Where Did Our Love Go (40th Anniversary Edition) It's a 2 disc set with both the Mono and Stereo versions of the album, 19 bonus tracks from the sessions, AND a live concert to boot! $40 bucks, but it looks great. Another Motown release coming soon from Hip-o-select is this: It's outside the scope of this thread, but OH BOY!!
  8. Soul Sides is featuring a couple of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings tunes. Check it out! http://soul-sides.com/2005/01/what-comes-naturally.html

  12. Thank you, Mike. Cool white label promo 45, Jim!
  13. You should have driven down I-65 through Indy to Nashville, then taken I-24 south through Tennessee. You could have tuned in to 89.5 WMOT in Murfreesboro. You can hear it pretty much the whole way as you travel through the mid-state.
  14. Oh yeah...here is the back. Are these short edits from the album Pre-Bird?
  15. Someone just posted this 7" EP on the usenet. I've never seen this series before. Kinda cool, eh?
  16. David Ruffin - "Each Day Is A Lifetime"
  17. It still looks pretty damn cool!

  19. Hmm... the link works for me. Just go to www.arstechnica.com and you'll see the article on the home page.
  20. Ars Technica has a new Guide to Ripping and Encoding Music. Lots of good information!
  21. Thanks! I would have guessed that they put Jasper at the beginning, not the end.
  22. Does anyone have the original LP track listing for Spiral by Bobby Hutcherson? The connoisseur CD with Medina had all 5 tracks from the 1968 Spiral session, but didn't include 'Jasper' which was on the original record. (I know 'Jasper' is from Dialogue). I was just curious how they sequenced the LP.
  23. Re: ADA-508 B-)
  24. Dude, We're ADA-508 compliant!
  25. There are several factors to consider when ripping ones collection to digital audio. First is the size of the file. If you have limited hard drive space or you have a digital audio player with a small capacity, then choose a lower bit rate. 128Kbps MP3's are compressed by a factor of about 10. You can store 9-10 albums ripped at 128 on a single CD-R. Second is sound quality. Lossless compression is great if you have unlimited storage space. There are several options. Apple recently jumped on the lossless bandwagon with its own lossless codec. There are several others, including FLAC and Monkey's Audio. Lossless codecs shrink the file size about in half. Although you have no loss in sound quality, most players do not support lossless codecs. MP3 is the most widely supported codec so I would probably use it. Especially since you are ripping your collection for the first time. You should also be aware that there are many different MP3 encoders out there. Some sound great and some sound terrible. I suggest using the LAME MP3 encoder. I rip my files at 192 or at variable bit rate using the --alt-preset standard tag. (if you don't know what that means, follow the links below... If you have a mac, use the iTunes to LAME encoder whick can be found HERE. If you use windows, use Exact Audio Copy to rip your files and the LAME encoder plugin to convert to MP3. They can be found HERE, and HERE. There is a ton of good encoding information at Hydrogen Audio.
