  1. I happened to log on to Organissimo last night at 11:00 and saw that your show was about to start. Now that I have broadband again, I was able to tune in. I really enjoyed it! It brought back a whole bunch of good memories for me. I used to do a Sunday night show on the Michigan State station nearly 15(!) years ago. I don't visit the Impulse Tyner's as often as I should. Thanks for the great reminder. I've got you bookmarked now.
  2. My new favorite picture of my boys.
  3. If you dig Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, you got to pick this one up. http://www.daptonerecords.com/pages/dap003LP.html Dusty Groove says: Super-heavy funk from late great Desco scene! The Mighty Imperials were one of the best funky 45 groups to record for deep funk Desco label -- and their first album was never properly released. Now, the whole thing's finally out officially -- a funky treasure that sounds like a lost 70s gem! Go get it!!!
  4. I have really been enjoying this thread. You've piqued my interest. I found an MP3 version of 'The End Of It All' and I must hear more. I just emailed a guy on the Jandek list who wanted to split a box of 20. After reading some suggestions here, and reading Seth Tisue's site, I've decided on the following 11 titles to start. # 0739: Ready for the House (1978) # 0740: Six and Six (1981) # 0742: Chair Beside a Window (1982) # 0743: Living in a Moon So Blue (1982) # 0747: Interstellar Discussion (1984) # 0753: Blue Corpse (1987) # 0759: Lost Cause (1992) # 0760: Twelfth Apostle (1993) # 0761: Graven Image (1994) # 0762: Glad to Get Away (1994) # 0770: I Threw You Away (2002) What do you think? Can't wait to join in the discussion!
  5. Yeah, big win!!! The sound is GREAT. The music is GREAT. My reissure of the year for sure. I was just curious if my ears are still working. Thanks guys.
  6. Finally picked this one up. It's great to have this on CD again. (I used to have the musidisc CD version.) I don't see any mention of this in the liners, but does anyone know if this is a mono recording? Sounds like it to me, but i'm not exactly sure. Thanks
  7. With the risk of getting this thread moved over to the politics thread.....
  8. I really want to see this. There is a trailer here... http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/tom_dowd.html Looks just GREAT. Give us a report!
  9. Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to hear the rest of the gig. This is the first time that I've heard Arno. I am really taken by his playing. Something about his phrasing sounds very familiar to me. I'm not saying he sounds like someone else or that i've heard it before. Not at all. His tone and sound feel like home to me. Very comforting and satisfying. I don't know if that makes sense, but it does to me!
  10. September 25, 2004 Flint, Mich., Mayor Loosens Reading Ban By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 12:10 a.m. ET FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- Mayor Don Williamson on Friday said he will allow newspapers in City Hall -- a slight loosening of his ban on city employees reading anything at work that's not related to their jobs. The announcement came after police temporarily detained a newspaper carrier for trying to deliver subscriptions to City Hall. Williamson issued an executive order in July that prohibits city workers from reading or having non-work-related reading material on city property during their work hours. On Friday, the mayor's office said the city will allow ``delivery of newspapers by authorized persons'' for use during breaks and lunch. ``The goal remains for taxpayers of the City of Flint to be certain that tax dollars are being spent in a wise manner. We must continue to strive to increase the productivity of city employees to deliver the level of service that our citizens expect and deserve,'' Williamson said in a statement. The American Civil Liberties Union said it was looking into complaints about the executive order. ``People have a right to read,'' said Wendy Wagenheim, a spokeswoman for the ACLU of Michigan.
  11. A second recommendation here for the Proper Doughboys set. It's wonderful! Re:Gary Burton in Nashville, check out this record: The Nashville All-Stars - After The Riot At Newport. Originally RCA, now on Bear Family as a single CD. SIDE 1 RELAXIN' (11:05) NASHVILLE TO NEWPORT (3:13) OPUS DE FUNK (6:08) SIDE 2 'S WONDERFUL (4:31) 'ROUND MIDNIGHT (4:32) FRANKIE AND JOHNNY (3:30) RIOT-CHOUS (8:53) Recorded July 4, 1960 at Newport, Rhode Island. The story of the riots at Newport on the July 4th 1960 weekend has been told and retold. We won't detail it further. The unanimous feeling of the critics was that the music heard at the Festival was the best in its history. But nobody has commented on the music not heard at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. One group I was particularly interested in hearing was to perform on Monday night, July 4th. This was a group of jazz musicians from Nashville, Tennessee, headed by Chet Atkins---the same Chet Atkins who is so famous for his appearances on the "Grand Ole Opry" and the many Country and Western albums recorded for RCA Victor. Several months ago Bob Yorke, Ben Rosner and Steve Sholes of RCA Victor invited me to Nashville to hear a jam session. Many of the Country and Western musicians have a great love for jazz. After finishing "Grand Ole Opry," they invariably find their way to a little club in Nashville where they switch styles and start "swinging," far into the early hours of the morning. In addition to Chet and Hank Garland, Floyd Cramer, Boots Randolph, Buddy Harman, Bob Moore and Gary Burton---all well-known in the country field---there are usually one or two faculty members of A & I State University of Tennessee. One of them, Brenton Banks, is heard on this record playing violin and piano. Probably you are wondering how this album was recorded if these musicians did not appear at the Festival. RCA Victor Records, responsible for bringing these musicians to Newport, rented a beautiful mansion. When it became obvious that the remainder of the concert was cancelled, Ben Rosner thought it a good idea to have a party on the lawn and record the musicians at a jam session. The music on this disc is what transpired on that sunny Monday afternoon. Incidentally, but importantly, two selections in the album were composed for the occasion. Chet Atkins penned Nashville To Newport, and Boots Randolph with Hank Garland extemporized Riot-Chous the night before the session---right after the big riot. To me, the highlights of the album are the wonderful violin of Brenton Banks, the swinging guitar of Hank Garland, and the brilliant work of a 17-year old vibraphonist from Princeton, Indiana, Gary Burton, whom you will be sure to hear a lot in the future. The thing that impressed me most was the virtuosity and sensitivity of Chet Atkins' guitar work. While not a hard swinger, Chet has the ability to express a style uniquely his. He has the same delicacy of approach that exemplified the music of Django Reinhardt. Chet's technique is that of the classical guitarist, yet his harmonic concept is modern. I have no doubts that if he would devote his time exclusively to jazz, he'd become equally renowned in that medium. The spontaneity and exuberance of the music and musicians on this album is in the tradition that made jazz the great music it is.
  12. I think the raggedness is part of what makes this session so special. They are very loose, but manage to keep it together and still tear it up. Some songs just FLY. I really the electric piano on this one. Lenny White kicks some major ass too. Is the remastering any different than the box set?
  13. http://www.o-dub.com/soulsides/ A couple of nice tunes for y'all! Soul Sides is a great MP3 blog.
  14. Looks like post padding to me one of the ways we did it...back in the old days.
  15. Good comeback by Indy. Both teams 1-1 in the AFC South. A few BS tick tack calls going both ways. It seems the refs are determined not to have any responsibility in making judgement calls.
  16. Tough close Colts-Titans game so far. Indy is up a TD with plenty of time in the 4th. 2 great teams!
  17. Received my discs on Friday! My wife left the mail sitting in the garage, so I didn't find it until this morning. Thank you!!
  18. Has anyone heard this record? Has it ever been issued on CD? Comments? Reviews? Thanks.
  19. He can't help it folks. Here is his thread crap from last season. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...120entry86075
  20. You might give iTunes for the PC a try. I like the interface. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
  21. My barber charges $12. I always tip $3 to make an even $15. It took me a while to find a decent barber down here. I finally bit the bullet and went to a place suggested by a local. Drake's barber shop. It looks like it hasn't been remodeled since 1972. There are 4 chairs that face a wall full of mounted bass, old license plates and a television set tuned to the outdoor channel. Above each chair is the name of the barber carved in wood. Frank.....Stan.....Bud....Coon. Yes, it's kind of the redneck barber shop. But I tell you what, Stan cuts a mean head of hair!
  22. Your computer could be being used for a denial of service attack.
  23. I remember the first time I drove to Chicago from Lansing. I decided to take the Skyway off of 94, which goes right through Gary. It was like driving through some apocalyptic nightmare. The steel plants were bellowing black smoke. Flames came out of tall pipes. The smell was awful. I was dumbfounded. It has gotten better since then, (80s) but it is still unbelievable.
  24. I'd love one! Thanks, Jim jimdye@gmx.net
  25. Member #4! Organissimo Forum Fun Fact: 3 of the first 4 members here are named Jim! When the BNBB ship was going down, I remember discussing options with everyone. As soon as B3-er fired this baby up, I made the jump. I still read a couple of other boards on occasion, but consider this my home.
