  1. This was an album I searched for years and could not find until the mid '80s when it was part of the DMM vinyl releases that came out of the Pathé-Marconi plant in suburban Chatou. Still have the round-shaped BN poster that came with it!
  2. Well, I am glad I did not have to do business with Valburn! For a different view of the man (and for those who don't know who we are talking about) here is an 1991 article from The New York Times: Ellington fan
  3. Valburn's series of releases on his Merritt label was outstanding. I hope his death won't mean the end of the Duke Ellington DETS CDs series!
  4. Tony Scott 'The Complete Tony Scott' (RCA Victor)
  5. What was your problem with him, Chris? Met Valburn at a record convention in New Jersey several years ago and found him a very nice man!
  6. Good musician and excellent writer! Ran into him on a couple of occasions including one when I paid a business visit to the International Herald Tribune offices in suburban Neuilly. Zwerin was also there on a visit (he wrote on jazz for the paper). Very nice man.
  7. He was excellent in Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Trouble with Harry' where he starred against a debuting Shirley McLaine.
  8. Henry Threadgill Black Saint/Soul Note 7CD box now listening to disc 6, 7 will be next!
  9. John Bunch Quintet 'John's Bunch' (Famous Door) with Al Cohn and Urbie Green
  10. That one... pretty good album. I still have the mono original. Guess that's the going to be the best way to listen to the session!
  11. I'm out of the traders' market. Will get this one!
  12. Informatively Hank Jones had to cancel an appearance at the Cully Jazz Festival in Switzerland next week because of health problems which currently prevent him from traveling far from home. Hope he will be back in shape for that Birdland gig!
  13. Announcement from the bebop spoken here blog
  14. Where is this Alladin's Cave exactly? Gibert Joseph on the Boulevard Saint-Michel! Within walking distance from my place
  15. Thanks for alerting the Satchmo fans, Marcel! Does not seem to be out right now but will be getting this when it hits the stores!
  16. The Rare Live Recordings label (Spanish bootleggers) released in 2006 the double CD John Coltrane Live at the Showboat taped at Philadelphia's Showboat club on June 17, 1963 during the Coltrane quartet appearance there with Roy Haynes subbing for Elvin Jones. RLR is now releasing more music (out next week) from that gig (taped on June 24) It seems that McCoy Tyner showed up late that day and part of the appearance was by Coltrane backed by Garrison and Haynes only. Tyner finally appeared for the end of the fourth of the eight tunes included. The CD ends with a solo piano by Coltrane on 'After the Rain'! Probably this will be in the same rather mediocre sound of the first release.
  17. Henry Threadgill 'The Black Saint & Soul Note, 7CD box set'. Currently playing 'Live at Montreal'.
  18. you mean you dislike the great albums he recorded for Prestige (recorded in New York) and for Verve/Gitanes (at least two recorded in New York and Paris)? The Verve 'Tango in Harlem' - with Christian McBride and Billy Higgins - recorded in New York and 'Live in Paris' are among his best records. The 'Live in Paris' was taped at the La Villa club where Edwards played on several occasions. Heard him live there and it was heaven!
  19. My favorite record shop had a copy of the Threadgill set for €16,50. Enjoying the music now!
  20. Splendid news April Fools or not It was about time that Mosaic took advantage of the same European copyright laws that so many of their copycats used!
  21. Wish Thierry Henry had been allowed to join his Barca teammates before the last minutes of the match. Will be watching the return match too! On their home ground, Barca should be able to overcome Arsenal!
