The released book was not what was initially announced. Turns out that 'Jazz Covers' is a very disappointing enterprise. We could have expected better from Taschen, its publisher. Too many albums show up that should have been ignored (Louis Armstrong is represented by only one British Ace of Hearts cover, same for Bill Evans only one LP the far from representative 'From Left to Right' !?!). One of the very few positive aspects of the book was its reasonable price!

No doubt! Une fois! Weren't all the tracks recorded in Paris? Assume you will also include this metal box version of the 'Les 100 Plus Belles Mélodies' set...

And now another spanish label American Jazz Classics is reissuing Shelly Manne's 'Play Peter Gunn' and 'Son of a Gunn' complete on a single CD. Complete except for one track 'Walking Bass' from the first album that is missing because of space limitation!

That Jimmy Heath book ought to be a quite interesting read. Hope it will be as good as it should!

Those Scorpio vinyls leave me cold. I'ld rather get CD reissues instead. The Evolution pressing I listened to was another matter. I have know the session from the BN NY mono version too. This stereo reissue was real music to my ears!

I have 2 or 3 of these LPs which I picked from some 99 cents bins a long time ago. Listened to them once and filed them in some unreachable space. There are so much better Chet Baker albums to listen to!

Odd thing about that Toshiba (9359) is that the only place (inside or out) that you'll find any info about the musicians is on the japanese language obi. Norman Weiser's cover liner notes gives you zero info.....doesn't even mention the club. I have a Japanese LP reissue from King of this (UA K18P-9224). That was an exact replica of the original UA with the Norm Weiser notes and no personnel listing either. Not even an obi!

I was impressed with the sound of this recent LP reissue of Grachan Moncur's classic 'Evolution'. This was manufactured - with approval from Michael Cuscuna - by the French outfit Heavenly Sweetness. 'Evolution' and several other BN LPs are currently available in selected record stores and on French ebay A recent article in the French magazine Shook. Need I say I have no connection whatsoever with the company?

Grachan Moncur and the AEC were indeed Paris in late 1969. There was some interaction (including Moncur taking part with Bowie, Roscoe and Malachi on the Actuel/Byg session 'Hommage to Africa' by Sonny Murray that summer) but can't recall a concert with the Ensemble and Moncur playing together. Would have to go and search for copies of the French jazz magazines of the time but that's a long and dusty job... Does it really make much of a difference?

Svensk Jazzhistoria, vol. 9 (Caprice), disc 4 A splendid series which brings a tremendous amount of excellent 'and rarely heard outside Scandinavia) music!

A pity that Chronological Classics never tackled with a Bob Crosby series! Richard Sudhalter's 'Lost Chords' had an enthusiastic chapter about the orchestra.

The Toshiba is the December 1961 date from the Blue Note club. The others are from March 1956. That's the lot. Shame on the BN label people for never reissuing that 1961 date from their United Artists files

Wouldn't spend five minutes trying to locate a martini club in Khartoum... but if I were you I'ld try to locate a copy of this CD: Zoot Sims in Paris from the long gone EMI Jazztime series. It has the full Ducretet-Thompson session plus the Club Français du Disque date recorded one day earlier with almost the same players. That's the copy I listen to when I want to listen to all this! I also have a copy of the Ducretet-Thompson ten-incher (condition OK) but I keep that one until I will need money to buy me Havana cigars!

Almost nothing but deaths today I was not aware of his film career. Sad to see him go too!

There is an entry (in swedish) on Wikipedia on him. He seems to be having a very interesting career outside of the jazz world. Two of his appearances on albums are included in volume 9 of the excellent series 'Svensk Jazzhistoria' that came out on Caprice. Will listen to this later today!
