  1. You're in for a treat! The film music from Prokofiev is magnificent!
  2. One more great album by Rollins. Been enjoying that one for several months now!
  3. Matthew, you've been warned about that Practice Tape No. 1!
  4. Those I can think of: the Milestone 'Solo Sessions, vol. 1 and 2', they are included in the Riverside Complete Bill Evans box, also 'Practice Tape No. 1' (on E3 Records) This one is for completists only. Don't think a vol. 2 was ever released...
  5. Two vinyls that crossed my path today (cost was €10 each): - an original copy with the silvercolored embossed plastic cover of the Maurice Vander trio session 'Du Coté de Chez Swing' that came out in 1980 on the Night and Day label. The cover was designed by none other than Francis Paudras. The cover is mint whic is not the case of the vinyl whic suffers from several scratch - the seller warned me of this default which explains the low selling rate of this much sought item, - a mint mono copy of the Charlie Parker Records 'Man With a Happy Sound' from bop singer Joe Carroll with t wo BN participants Grant Green and ConradLister in the accompanying combo! Thisonelooks and plays beautifully!
  6. Joe Carroll 'Man With a Happy Sound' Charlie Parker Records, mono) with Conrad Lester and Grant Green
  7. There's that album by the David Matthews Big Band but I never heard it and have no idea if it's any interesting.

    Charles Mingus

There have been various Organissimo threads on that well documented tour. This one among others. I was lucky to attend the two 1964 Paris concerts. Among the very best concerts I ever attended! They're etched in my memory!
  9. Maurice Vander 'Du Coté de Chez Swing' (ND) original copy with embossed plastic silver cover
  10. Big mistake you made! This is one of the very best twofer from the great Savoy series. With lots of superb sessions (and plenty of interesting alternate takes) by Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff, Brew Moore, Allen Eager. Many of these have yet to be reissued on CD. A rather rare vinyl these days! The Mosaic Brothers is quite a different item (and very worthy too!). Oh! I know the feeling about that record convention mood
  11. Sergei Prokofiev's score for Eisenstein's epic 'Alexander Nevsky' predates Herrman and falls somehow in that category. Never saw the film 'Lieutenant Kije' and understand it's not very good but the score Prokofiev wrote for the film should also rank there.
  12. We agree on a lot of things on this board, Bob, but tonight we were not on the same side.... It is very painful to be French tonight and this defeat is hard to take. Well done to England. It was an awful game but Wilkinson managed to win it for his country. England justabout deserved to win it. Best of luck for the final. The French simply forgot that rugby is played maintly with hands and did not use either teir hands or their head, just their feet! They did not deserve to win! England was not that much better but they had Jonny Wilkinson. The man is a legend and proved once more he deserves his status
  13. Art Pepper 'Hollywood All-Star Sessions" (Galaxy) the session with Sonny Stitt
  14. The lineup (from three different sessions) includes, in addition to Poindexter: - Eric Dolphy, Sonny Red, Jimmy Heath, Clifford Jordan, Pepper Adams, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Carter, Elvin Jons on the first session, - Phil Woods, Sonny Red, Clifford Jordan, Sal Nistico, Pepper Adams, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Carter, Charles Persip, on the 2nd session, - Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Dexter Gordon, Billy Mitchell, Pepper Adams, Gildo Mahones, Bill Yancey, Charles Persip o the 3rd session. Do you really need to know more!
  15. Henry Grimes 'The Call' (ESP Disk) with Perry Robinson and Tom Price
  16. No, Black & Blue did not use Hamilton photos on all their Midnight Slows series. The series WAS successful. It appealed to the non-harcore jazz fans who were pretty numerous when the albums were released. Which is why their used so many similar albums with the same tenor/piano/organ combination.
  17. Yeah! but the cover of that rerelease never appealed to me. At least the new reissue uses the original cover
  18. Joe Henderson 'Our Thing' (BN, mono original)
  19. From The New York Times today.
  20. Ties were very much in when I was a growing up young man. It was even a necessary accessory if you were trying to climb up the economy ladder. When I reached the level that satisfied me, I took a laissez-faire attitude and gave up the tie. Haven't worn one in years! Still have a number of elegant Italian, British and French ties but don't feel a need to sport any of them by now!
  21. Most of the album covers from the 'Midnight Slows' series were taken by David Hamilton who specialized in erotic images of nubile girls. The covers obviously boosted the success of this Black & Blue series!
  22. I'll really be getting that Fahrenheit score! And another recommendation for that Stephan Oliva CD even - as Ubu already pointed out - it's a very difficult disc to get!
  23. I sure am. Has been since I saw 'Citizen Kane' for the first time decades ago. Hisscores for itchcock are etched in my memory. Herrman also wrote a superb score for François Truffaut 'Fahrenheit 451'. Not Truffaut's best but I stay tuned to the Hermann soundtrack every time I catch the film!
  24. Sonny Criss 'Saturday Morning' (Xanadu) with Barry Harris, Leroy Vinnegar and Lenny McBrowne
  25. The three last tracks from that Lonehill reissue are from the Bailey 'Reaching Out' session (with Frank Haynes, Grant Green, etc...) that was originally recorded for Jazztime. Typical Lonehill fill-ins...
