  1. Looks like there won't be a 2008 Blue Note calendar... My choice could very well be the Classic Blues Artwork 1920s calendar. It looks like a winner (and a keeper!)...
  2. Johnny Hodges 'The Eleventh Hour' (Verve, stereo) arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson
  3. I'll believe there is a new reissue of Duke's 'A Drum is a Woman' when I see it. Nothing so far. If there is a reissue, I hope it's done on the same standards as the Epic reissues I have encountered!
  4. The review of the concert in The New York Times today:
  5. Clunky, the best place to buy vinyl in Paris is Paris Jazz Corner, on the rue de Navarre (just off the Arenes de Paris). There is also Crocojazz on the rue de la Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, just below the Pantheon monument. Both shops are in the same Left Bank area. You can walk from one place to the next. The two can be pretty expensive!
  6. Trust you enjoyed it Never heard the quadrophonic version. My Impulse is the stereo version. Great album!
  7. The review (by Francis Davis) of the concert in this week's Village Voice:
  8. Jazz in Deutschland 'Aus Dem Amiga Archiv 1947-1965', disc 5 working my way backwards trough this set, a gift from a Swiss friend!
  9. Agree, pretty frustrating because otherwise they're doing a great job with the reissues I have seen (and heard). And they would have had no problem including this Rudolph on the CD. The reissue clocks in at 54m40s! Plus the prices for these reissues look right
  10. I like this shot of Doris Lessing getting the news she was awarded the Nobel prize from journalists waiting outside her home today. She carries groceries while returning from a shopping spree at the local supermarket http://news.yahoo.com/photo/071011/481/916...421ad7bec63d19b
  11. Sony BMG France has reissued several albums from the Epic jazz catalogue on its 'Jazz Originals' series. The CDs are planned for release at the end of this month. Those I have seen so far include: There might be others. The Sony BMG website has nothing so far on these releases. All CDs seen so far come with informative booklets. Producers have gone to the original master tapes. Additional material has been added when available. Mastering was taken care by La Source Mastering who did a very good job judging from the CDs I have purchased.
  12. Good thing that Doris Lessing was honored today with the Nobel literature prize. She will be 88 next week. Shame on the Nobel prize jury for not having honored another British writer Graham Greene while he was still alive!
  13. Agree, problem with the Black & Blue label these days is that there are no longer distributed by Night and Day. The company went down some time ago. Black & Blue are now in the hands of Nocturne which is obviously more busy with other labels.
  14. Curtis Fuller 'Cabin in the Sky' (Impulse, stereo, orange label)
  15. This comes from two sessions recorded for the Transition label. The first seven tracks were on the 'Byrd Jazz' LP, The two bonus tracks were on the 'Byrd's Eyes View' LP. Both sessions were recorded in 1955 and have been reissued on CD elsewhere.

A review of Martial Solal's appearance at the Village Vanguard in The New York Times today
  17. Count Basie 'Basie Land' (Verve, stereo) with arrangements by Billy Byers

Thanks for relaying the McKusick interview. This is a great read. Will take a close look at that blog later. Looks very interesting!

  20. Haven't tackled this yet. Since Storyville does not give much details, the task looks a bit difficult at the present. Disc 8 looks like the previously issued 'No Fool, No Fun'
  21. Clifford Jordan 'Dr. Chicago' (BeeHive) with Red Rodney, Jaki Byard, Ed Howard and Vernel Fournier
  22. One of those promos I think - intended for radio station use. Quite rare I believe. And I paid only fifty cents for it!!!! I'm just giggling with excitement about this! I NEVER stumble over anything this rare! I have only the regular stereo original with the regular BN blue and white Liberty label
  23. A treat for fans of Ben Webster! Dig Ben
  24. Martial Solal 'Suite for Trio' (MPS) with NHOP and Daniel Humair
  25. Not only interesting but also excellent and obviously worthy of a reissue. That 'Guitar Soul' Status vinyl has those three Burrell/Galbraith tracks, plus one track showcasing the talent of Bill Jennings (with Jack McDuff, Wendell Marshall and Bobby Donaldson) on side one and two tracks on side B by the Tiny Grimes ensemble with J.C. Higginbotham and Eddie Davis that left out of the 'Callin' the Blues' vinyl on Swingville/Prestige.
