  1. Billie Holiday Lady Day Columbia box, discs 3 and 4
  2. Paid all of €1,90 ($2,30) for a 33RPM 7 Inch blank vinyl in a blank envelope when I visited one of the regular stores today. There was a typewritten note inside indicating it was recorded in San Francisco in 1967 by Count Basie and his rhythm section. Well, it was worth every cent. Turned out to be the music tracks from Basie's appearance on Ralph Gleason's 'Jazz Casual' TV show. The Chris Sheridan Count Basie Bio-Discography says this was issued on a Ri-Disc 12incher which I never ran into but does not list that special 7incher.
  3. Check to see if it's mono, and if it is, give it a spin. The stereo version is lame in comparison. Hey, I have two mono copies of it ...and one stereo You'll probably discard them when you get older
  4. Check to see if it's mono, and if it is, give it a spin. The stereo version is lame in comparison. Don't have the copy with me. It's been shelved in the cellar. I think it was a mono copy. I stuck to mono to the bitter end until the stereo invasion!
  5. It's not a sin, you might have a copy of The Dark Side Of The Moon and nobody here will crucify you, well, almost nobody. Don't want to be crucified... ...and I never got that Dark Side. Had lost interest with the Pink Floyd almost right away! And never looked back!
  6. Don't get me wrong, I love 'Symphony for Improvisors' but always thought it was easy listening free jazz! Probably because I got so used to it when I heard repeatedly Don Cherry and the quintet with Gato Barbieri play this every night at the Chat Qui Pèche club in Paris.
  7. I remember buying the album when it came out. Still have that copy. Haven't listened to it in ages!
  8. The soundtrack to the 1990 Bertrand Tavernier film 'Daddy Nostalgie' is not part of this series but it has recently been reissued by Sony France. The name of Jimmy Rowles does not appear on the cover but fans of him should note that he is featured on five of the eleven tracks. His contributions are invaluable. Other musicians heard on this sountrack album include Louis Sclavis, Jacques Di Donato, Philip Catherine and Ron Carter. Wish music composer Antoine Duhamel and Tavernier has used Pierre Michelot instead of Ron Carter!
  9. Lee Konitz Quintet 'Figure and Spirit' (Progressive) with Ted Brown, Albert Dailey, Rufus Reid and Joe Chambers
  10. The jackets of the Mainstream gatefold were made of slim cardboard (like some of the BN gatefolds from the 60s and 70s) and did not endure rough treatment as often was the case for those vinyls. The Impulse gatefolds have withstood the time much better. Those were made of thickened cardboard.
  11. In a similar vein... From today's edition of The San Francisco Chronicle:
  12. Saw that vol. 1 today. Will get this very soon The tracks (with audio) are listed here.
  13. Paul Bley 'Axis' (IAI)
  14. This item has appeared on eBay: unknown Monk acetate
  15. Is Martha Glaser involved in this
  16. Another excellent sweatered session from Mance
  17. It's the top title that shows the magazine as Jazz Magazine. No sweat!
  18. Amazon.fr is currently selling a number of items from the Universal France Bandes Originales de Films series. €8,99 a CD. The List. Some of those CDs have jazz interest: 'Le Choix des Armes' has Ron Carter/Buster Williams bass contributions, 'Beau-Père' has Stephane Grappelli, Eddy Louiss, Maurice Vander, Pierre Michelor and Kenny Clarke, 'Les Félins' has music by Lalo Schiffrin, 'Mort d'un Pourri' has contributions by Stan Getz, 'A Bout de Souffle', has the music from Martial Solal, 'La Métamorphose des Cloportes', has the music from Jimmy Smith, etc...
  19. PeeWee Russell and Oliver Nelson 'The Spirit of '67' (Impulse, stereo)
  20. I'll bookmark it when there is a link to the Duke Ellington Panorama site This looks even better today than yesterday!
  21. Wayne Shorter will play several concerts here in early September when he appears at the Jazz A La Villette festival. Jazz A La Villette
  22. I rate 'All Seeing Eye' high. One of the most adventurous of the Shorter BN albums. It may be a bit difficult to absorb at the start but gets more rewarding after repeated playing.
  23. Billy Harper 'The Believer' (Baystate)
  24. Met Pauline Rivelli a couple of times during visits to NYK in the late sixties. It was common knowledge then that she was Thiele's companion. When I had a first look at this thread, I thought it referred to the French review Jazz Magazine. Unless Im' wrong, the Rivelli magazine was simply named Jazz which was changed into Jazz & Pop in the late 60s. One photo of James Brown I took was on the cover of a late 1967 Jazz & Pop -_-
  25. Why worry? So much excellent recordings were made more than fifty years ago. I'm sure the Europeans will take care of providing the music legally. The next years should see a blossoming of more and more interesting reissues.
