The "Outskirts of Town" session is KILLER...a little hidden gem. Sulieman is on fire, as is Jimmy Forrest, Jerome Richardson, Tiny Grimes, etc, etc.
Yes, but don't overlook 'Roots', which I rate even higher. A vastly overlooked date!
Oui!!
The concert was at the Olympia theater. It was the second time I heard Rollins live. First one was with his trio (with Grimes and Pete LaRoca) at the Club Saint-Germain in 1958.
As much as I still love Rollins today, his playing at the time was at its zenith.
Know you'll love the music! In very good mono sound. Obviously 'borrowed' from the vaults at Europe 1 radio station, the radio that organized the concert.
It was first issued on the bootleg label Magnetic as 'Live in Paris '63'.
John Lewis went at Bach with proper respect. It was Bud Powell - on 'Bud on Bach' in the 1957 'Bud!' album - who approached Bach with an urgency that shatters the respectfullness and brings the music to its today's immediacy. A masterpiece worthy of Johann Sebastian!
Are you sure about that? Or have you just had a relapse?
He's just trying to avoid the Eddie Costa cold turkey for a while...
Hope that happens after that Eddie Costa discography is completed
Idrees Sulieman also has nice solo spots on these two Savoy albums:
'Top Brass' (along with Donald Byrd, Ray Copeland, Joe Wilder and Ernie Royal)
André Hodeir 'American Jazzmen Play Andre Hodeir's 'Essais' (along with Donald Byrd)
Don't want to dismiss that Skull Session which is an interesting album but I'ld say it is one to get after having explored the rest of the Nelson records on Prestige, plus his two first Impulse.
Glad to see the Paul Gonsalves 'Boom Jackie - Boom Chick' becoming available.
The recent prices the original vinyl reached recently on eBay scared me away!
Roy DuNann was the man who engineered the most natural sounding albums. He remains unequalled.
When you listen to any of his Contemporary dates, you have that unique feeling of being right there with the musicians when they were recording.
Some favorites (in addition to the Art Pepper, Rollins and others already mentioned):
The Poll Winners
Curtis Counce 'You Get More Bounce'
Teddy Edwards 'Teddy's Ready'
Teddy Edwards and Howard McGhee 'Together Again'
As nice a Kenny Dorham date you can get. I have enjoyed this album ever since I bought the Japanese vinyl reissue a long time ago. I'm partial to KD's singing too!
Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker 'Anthropolgy' (Spotlite)
The Barry Ulanov All Star Metronome Jazzmen broadcast date plus more broadcast sides by Tadd Dameron and his orchestra
