I have checked the Chris Sheridan biobook. All three tunes were recorded for Roulette on September 24, 1959. The UK Columbia EP is listed in the various releases from the session.

Dan, that's a British Columbia EP reissue of Clef/Verve material. Columbia England was distributing the Clef/Verve catalogue back in the late fifties.

Delfeil de Ton is a real person and a very serious and intelligent commentator/writer with his own sense of humor. The liner notes he wrote for the Shepp/Full Moon Ensemble should not be taken at face value. Delfeil de Ton has a column in the prestigious Le Nouvel Observateur weekly magazine. He delves into jazz pretty often. He was among the very active supporters of Shepp, Ayler, Sun Ra and other new players when these musicians came to France several decades ago.

Orchestra leader/conductor Jacques Denjean was a Double Six singer. The breakup date for the Double Six is usually given as April 1965. Some other musicians who sang at one time or another with the group include Roger Guerin, Jef Gilson and Bernard Lubat. Mimi Perrin was the de facto leader of the Double Six. She was a singer with The Blue Stars (along with nBlossom Dearie, Christian Chevalier and others) before forming the Double Six.

It won't be to everyone's taste. Listening ot it will rise your sugar blood level! Like it. Hodges at his syrupy best! Will take everything from the Rabbit. Love him! Hey, the man hired John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor - not to mention Al Sears - in his too short lived band!

Never..., I think you missed the point about the book. It's not supposed to be THE book on jazz photos. It is a recollection of the travels that Claxton and Joachim Berendt made in 1960 through the various jazz cities over the United States. As such it is quite remarkable with a stunning number of interesting photos I had not seen before. And even if the reproduction of the images is not perfect (the book would then have costs thousan$$s, the standard raised here is quite high. Much better than on the previous Taschen Claxton book 'Jazz Seen'. Look at the new book with a fresh eye. There is quite a lot to enjoy there!

Happy Birthday, Chris Hoping that a lot of good things will come your way!

Brad, the Lonehill release includes the full material from a Roulette album 'Eddie Davis Trio Featuring Shirley Scott' from March 1958 and from a Roost album from May 1958 which had the same title. Presume the Roost album came out first. Both with George Duvivier and Arthur Edgehill. This release smokes!

Maren, I had some trouble ingesting the top of your cake However it all went down after drinking the wine that Catesta sent at the same time! Many, many thanks to all for making it a wonderful day!

The JazzUnilimited CD has liner notes by Jan Lohmann, the author of THE Milles Davis Discography book. Doubt that he would contribute to a grey release!
-
Thanks EKE and Brownie. I actually tried (like a couple of years ago) to get it from soundcity2000 and there was no response at all. F PS The October 1957 track mentioned by Lords is "Taking A Chance On Love", by Pettiford, Eddie Costa and Ed Thigpen, very possibly a left-over from the Bethlehem Winner's Circle session, subsequently included in the Discoveries LP. ← The liner notes to my vinyl copy by Phil Schaap - who KNOWS everything - state that the track indeed comes from the 'Winner's Circle' session!
-
I have a couple of these but forgot to ask William Claxton to sign them. This would have suited him better than the very heavy copy of the book he signed! He had a bit of a trouble lifting it and opening it to the first page to sign my copy! The book is quite astonishing. One of the very best jazz photos book ever!

Hey, old friend... care to tell me what's this tune like? I can listen to the music but cannot read it
