  1. An autographed copy of Coltrane's 'My Favorite Things'. Starting bid is $1,500. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...6507530917&rd=1
  2. No idea what's going to be inside the box. My guess is that it will include live music from concerts by Bechet in the early fifties... The good news for fans of Bechet is that Vogue BMG is reissuing the 1957 Sidney Bechet/Martial Solal Quartet album. All fourteen tracks. No alternates. Bechet and Solal have Lloyd Thompson and Al Levitt on bass and drums on the first eight tracks, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke on the six others.
  3. My copy of Larry Young's 'Of Love and Peace' (BN 84242) has BN NYK labels and the Van Gelder stamp (no ear), the BN 27 Years anniversary innersleeve. The cover has the BN Division of Liberty Records logo.
  4. Larry Young 'Of Love and Peace' (BN) I have always liked this album. A bit confused overall but so were the times it was recorded in! Larry Young remains my favorite organist!

    Red Norvo

I have the Red Norvo 1943-1944 Classics. This one incvludes five small group sessions. - a VDisc date with Aaron Sachs, Flip Philips and a rhythm section of Ralph Burns, Clyde Lombardi and John Blowers, - a quartet session with Stuff Smith, Remo Palmieri and Lombardi, - a sextet session with Sachs, Palmieri, Lombardi, etc. - another VDiscv session with the same above group, - two sides from the Keynote session with Sachs, Palmieri, Teddy Wilson and Slam Stewart. Drummer Eddie Dell is on the last three sessions. No vocals except for Helen Ward singing 'Too Marvellous For Words' in the first VDisc session!
  6. Christern's voicings and opinions do not merit this! He's got the respect of the majority of posters here! That he is not in agreement about Schaap does not entitle anyone to make such remarks about him!
  7. The Manhattan Jazz All Stars 'Swinging 'Guys and Dolls'' (Columbia 6-eye) A Teddy Charles album with arrangements by Teo Macero and Charles. The All Stars include Bob Brookmeyer, Phil Woods, Zoot Sims, Mose Allison, Dave McKenna, etc...
  8. The pianist on 'Sweet Georgia Brown' and 'Topsy' on the Onyx album 'After Hours in Harlem/Hot Lips Page' is Monk. And it's pure Monk!
  9. It's really good! It was one of the first releases of the AJMI label. The label also produced albums by Larry Schneider and the Martial Solal Dodecaband. Ortega enjoyed playing with the three musicians (Remi Charmasson on guitar, Guillaume Seguon on bass and Randy Kaye on drums) in his usual sincere no-concession attitude.
  10. January 25, 1952 - Count Basie and his renovated orchestra records for Clef (Jive At Five, No Name, Red Head, Every Tub) January 25, 1957 - The Prestige All Stars (Art Farmer , Hal McKusick, Al Cohn, Mal Waldron, Kenny Burrell, Teddy Kotick, Ed Thigpen) record 'Earthy'
  11. Happy Birthday, Clunky Enjoy all of it!
  12. PM sent!

    Bill Hardman

Bill Hardman recorded three albums for Muse. The first one Home has already been mentioned. There was also Focus with Slide Hampton, Junior Cook and Walter Bishop, then Politely with Junior Cook, Walter Bishop, Paul Brown and Leroy Williams. Never heard 'Focus' but 'Politely' is a very nice date. None of these Muse albums seem to have been reissued!
  14. Took my first dive in 1986. Original shipment included the Albert Ammons/Meade Lux Lewis set and the Herbie Nichols one. One of the first Mosaic brochure I received had a Chicago Tribune article on the label by Larry Kart!

    Anthony Braxton

The Braxton photo on the cover of 'The Wire' is the darkest photo I have seen on the cover of a magazine since Time magazine doctored the mugshot of OJ Simpson back in 1994! And the interview is even darker... Interview was done by Brian Morton (he of the Penguin Guide to Jazz!
  16. Another 'True Blue' BN original went even further: $2,375,50 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT

    Bill Hardman

I heard Bill Hardman on a couple of occasions when he played with the Junior Cook quintet at the Jazz Forum on NY's 23rd Street in the '70s. Walter Bishop was the pianist. Found some lively Hardman a while ago when I got the recently reissued 'Sonny Stitt with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' on Sonet!

    Don Ellis

Glenn Ferris is pretty active in Europe. He recently issued a new album 'Skin Me' on the Naive label. The samples sound fine: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...5825187-6537815 His quintet includes local musicians Jean-Michel Cabrol on tenor, Philippe Milanta on piano, Bruno Rousselet on bass and New Orleans-born drummer Jeff Boudreaux.
  19. That's rough! It's true the book is pretty heavy! Don't remember what the postage was on my copy but it was nothing like that! Well, France is closer to Denmark
  20. There is this new Art Pepper album out in Japan 'Art Pepper A Tribute to Charlie Parker on the Jazzbank label. With Sahib Shihab, Joe Albany, etc... A November 1975 concert. http://www.disknote.com/cdlp_cgi/detail_vi...d=04748&genre=6 Anybody heard that one?
  21. Listening to Zoot Sims at Ronnie Scott's back in November 1961. The original Fontana albums 'Cookin'' and 'Solo for Zoot' were reissued in Portugal on the 'Exclusive' label. Zoot is in top form backed by a rhythm section of Stan Tracy, Kenny Napper and Jackie Dougan!
  22. Weizen, a Portuguese label by the name of 'Exclusive' reissued vinyls of both Zoot albums. Obrigado to them B-) Cookin' and Solo for Zoot were both recorded at Ronnie Scott's. There were some overlap. Cookin' tracks were: - Stompin' at the Savoy - Love for Sale - Somebody Loves Me - Gone with the Wind - Autumn Leaves - Desperation Solo for Zoot had: - Blues in E Flat - Somebody Loves Me - Stompin' at the Savoy - Autumn Leaves
  23. As far as I know, Ortega is alive. Yes, Ortega is alive. And still touring. He was playing in France a couple of years ago and is still recdording new albums. Here is his AMG profile! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...11:2srv283c05oa
  24. Consuelo Velazquez who composed 'Besame Mucho' in 1941 died in Mexico City on Saturday. The tune had some marvellous jazz renditions. Grant Green included it in his 'Latin Bit' album, Art Pepper recorded several versions of the tune but the best jazz 'Besame Mucho' IMO remains the one that Barney Wilen recorded with Kenny Dorham and Duke Jordan on his 'Barney' RCA/BMG album recorded at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris. From Reuters.
  25. That Gil Evans Italian tour of 1978 produced the Horo 2LP 'Parabola'. Recorded in July 1978. Band on that Horo was Lew Soloff, Earl McIntyre, Steve Lacy, Arthur Blythe, Peter Levin, Don Pate and Noel McGhee. What's been offered on eBay might be a boot (that Horo twofer is a bit rare nowadays)...
