  3. I'm right behind you, Sidewinder Let that be a lesson to that young kat
  4. This thread is up to page 10 by now. Unless I am making a mistake his name has not been mentioned yet Anthony Ortega Talk of overlooked altos...
  5. I stayed at the Hotel Albert during my first visit to New York in the midsixties just before it was turned into an apartment house. A very interesting place! Wish there was an equivalent nowadays. The location was perfect. But I can't remember having seen the French/Beatnik bus driver. Or a bus there! And the restaurant was French only by name...
  6. Dan, news travel fast these days -_-
  7. Dmitry, I'ld rather have you pick me up Monk's jacket. Just what I need In case you are overbid, I'll settle for the catalogue! Merci beaucoup. Will PM you later...
  8. Dmitry, lucky you! Hope you will give us a first-hand report from the auction scene. It should be quite something! Wish I was there! And wish I could afford some of the items
  9. Are you aware of this Chano Pozo box: http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?PRID...OriginClick=yes suggest you check that 3CD box. Maybe hard to find by now but worth the search. A very comprehensive box, it includes four of the James Moody BN tracks. You can listen to samples from the box on the link. The box comes with a very documented 146-page booklet in Spanish (with full english translation!).
  10. Thanks Leeway for removing CDs out of this forum Now spinning: Shorty Rogers and his Giants 'Wherever The Wind Blows' (RCA) The Giants being Jimmy Giuffre, Lou Levy, Rakph Pena and Larry Bunker.
  11. John Hermansader designed this one. He took care ofr the design of quite a number of the covers BN ten-inchers in the fifties!
  12. My copies of Andrew Hill's Smoke Stack and Horace Silver's The Cape Verdean Blues are pre-Liberty Blue Notes. Both have the NY adress, the Van Gelder stamp and the ear. Both liner notes carry the 61st Street BN adress. Both have the '27 Years Blue Note' innersleeves. No sign of Liberty anywhere...
  13. There was a Japanese BN CD 'New Sounds of Art Blakey & James Moody' from 1990 that had all nine sides that James Moody recorded for BN in October 1948. Ron McMaster made the digital transfers. Ed. add: see now that this is being discussed on the Discography forum!
  14. BFT 22 guesses, part 2... 10 - what's this? Music that I have a hard time getting into it! 11- A journalist friend played me that 'song' a few years ago. I found it a bit grandiloquent. He liked it, I didn't. Final track from: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:aiftxqwhldse The music gets better when the preaching stops! 12- can't say I like that. Heard that in another life! Did not like this type of British rock that much then and don't care for it nowadays! 13- listened to that one a while back. Opening track: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:gnb1z8ba8yv5 I know who will recognize that one! 14- the song (the adaptation of it, rather) did not work for me 15- another familar song (from one of the jazz brothers) and could not really enjoy this! 16- a familiar classic (Willow). I'm out of that... 17- Americana guitar. Could not identify the player! Don't really care... 18- more piano trio. Failed to identify that one either(McCann?) 19- more americana. Enjoyed the lively music! 20- and more americana. Is somebody kidding? I started loving that tune when I heard Ellen Bustyn sing it in Martin Scorcese's 'Alice Does Not Live Here Anymore'. I'ld rather hear the soundtrack version, if there is one... 21- the BFT ends on a more interesting (for me) side. But I'm clueless on it... Many more pluses than downs. A very good job. Very much appreciated, Daqna
  15. A very odd mix. Some music I knew and enjoyed, couple of ones I discovered, several left me cold... 1- an holdover from the previous BFT. The players were very recognizable and the album was still at arm's length. Opening track from this one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:qcfxlffegcqq 2- an old favorite again...Track 3 from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:4l62mppf9f7o 3- a very well-know Herbie Hancock composition. Can't say I care for this easy-listening version... 4- I would care very much for that one. Great interpretation. I am a bit mystified by it... Nice one! Sounds like Bill Frisell on guitar... 5- some favorite music from a very favorite film. Not sure of the version but the music is from that film: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:0h1gtq6zzu42 Not the version that is played. The music is from the marvelouis final sequence (if I remember well! 6- more film music. Another favorite film. Don't have the record at hand and not sure of which track this is... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:aud0ylm8xpcb 7- the same saxophone player again. The music is so familiar but I have filed most of his albums. That was from one os his first latino venture. Liked it very much when it came out and then grew tired of it... 8- I have been a fan of that music ever since it was released. A very nice monkian adaptation. Reissued now, track 2 http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:1yaqoatayijz 9- same saxophone player. From a very good album. It's the opening track from this duo session: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:ne5a8qxbbtv4 More coming, but it's all going downhill after that
  16. When I was discovering Bach a very long time ago, one of the most interesting interpretation was Hermann Scherchen's. That was out on Westminster. It is still available on CD. Faraway from the current reinterpretations but the Scherchen versions were glorious!
  17. 'Editor and Publisher' focuses its story on the jazz auction on 15-year old Thelonious Monk's essay on newspapers...
  18. Aren't you supposed to go to school from time to time?
  19. The OJC Moondogs 'Moondog' and 'More Moondog' are so out, they're beyond...

  21. Brezhnev's successor Yuri Andropov was the Kremlin's resident jazz fan. Brezhnev probably knew as much about as jazz as GWB does!
  22. For Nixon, a sad yes... For Brezhnev, can't recall any sign of a ducal meeting!
  23. The Great Summit was Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington on Roulette (from 1961)!
  24. January 20, 1930 The Ten Blackberries (also known as the Duke Ellington Orchestra) record for the Banner/Perfect label the following sides: - Saint-James Infirmary - When You're Smiling - Rent Party Blues - Jungles Blues
