A hearty welcome to Milo. He will bring joy to his parents!

The strike was directly related to the incident which shocked everyone in France. If this had not happened, Andrew Hill would have been a happy passenger of the superfast train. The strike actions went on for a couple of days.

Speaking of Andrew Hill, there was this article in Le Monde newspaper. It's for French-speaking readers only unfortunately: The journalist Francis Marmande traveled with Hill and his Flemish manager from Paris to Nantes, western France, for a concert last Thursday. Travels throughout France were disrupted after a woman train controler was raped by a passenger in southern France that day. There were no more seats in the train to Nantes but the controller on that train turned out to be a fan of Hill and managed to squeeze the three travelers in the postal car of the TGV superfast train.

I've yet to buy any of those Spanish BNs. I already have whatever they put out and the colors they use for their covers hurt my eyes and my memories of the original BN covers colors!

Bob Gioga was a participant - and is heard briefly - in the panel discussions that were on the final disc of the 5-CD box Stan Kenton '5Oth Anniversary Celebration - Back to Balboa' that was released by the Mama Foundation in 1991. The box recorded the May 30, 1991 celebration of the 5Oth anniversary of the Kenton band debut at Balboa. Among the groups included in the set are the Lighthouse All Stars, the Bob Florence, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Holman, Tom Talbert and Buddy Childers big bands, the Lee Konitz, Bob Cooper, Bud Shank quartets and others! That one: http://www.counterpoint-music.com/Catalogu...ton/balboa.html

The mind boggles Brownie. I've heard a recording of this concert. You're a lucky bastard! Guy I think I have that concert also--on that great series France's Concert. Two tunes ('Impressions' and 'Afro Blue') from the Paris concert were released on the unauthorized France's Concert FCD disc 'John Coltrane, Live In Antibes, 1965' back in 1988 shortly before the label was ordered to shut down. The CD also had three additional tunes from the Antibes-Juan les Pins concert. I took a number of photos at the concert. Coltrane and his men played in tuxedos in the July heat! The concert was hot! Elvin Jones was a monster that night! -
Errr... I wouldn't be too sure of that, it's still American music... Besides Chirac's tastes in music are very basic. He hates it. He tolerates some military music and that's about it Music from any of the Mosaic sets would just bore him!

What J.A.W. said. Also note the Mosaics sets distributed over here have a detachable back cover page that reproduces the presentation text of the set that is on the Mosaic website!

The Village Vanguard turns 70 in February

You almost got to see Coltrane! Too bad your plane didn't have engine problems when you left. You could have stayed an extra night or two and saw him. I didn't catch Coltrane at the VV but had seen and heard him when his quartet played in Paris in 1962. Could not attend the Juan les Pins 1965 festival when Coltrane and his men played 'A Love Supreme' but nothing could have prevented me from attending the next day concert at the Salle Pleyel. One of the best concert I ever heard! -

My first visit to the VV was in 1965 during my first stay to New York. Went there on a Monday night when Tony Scott was holding an open jam session. Jeremy Steig and Victor Sproles where among the musicians taking part in the proceedings. The place was packed and lot of musicians were queuing for a chance to take part. Also ran into Prince Lasha that night! Had left town when John Coltrane played there Went back to the club whenever I happened to be in New York. Spent quite a number of incredible evenings there. Caught the Bill Evans trio, Zoot Sims with Jimmy Rowles; Also the Gil Evans big band. The atmosphere was more than congenial! Nobody was pushing you to buy and drink more than what you felt like having! Those were during Max Gordon's days! Last time I went to the club was in 1994 to hear the Joshua Redman quartet with Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins. Max Gordon was gone. Somehow the club's atmosphere had changed too much by then. -
BTW, he's amphibious, maybe he's from France? I was reading Spirou in the fifties when I was still a teenager and catching up on the Marsupialmi adventures. Wasn't Franquin from Belgium? As much Belgian as Herge!

The 1942 recording ban

Many thanks garthsj and SGUD missile! Very interesting posts! -
The film has never been released and it got reviewed by Golden Turkey Awards! Lewis-bashing is still a sports enjoyed by the US film critics! I am French and a great fan of Jerry Lewis. Not sure however that I would enjoy that one! The whole idea is pretty scary. But yes, I'ld like a chance to at least view this movie!

The Frogs (no laughs, please!) are hard to get here. I'm happy with the Chronological Classics releases. Lots of Miff Mole on their Red Nichols and The Red Heads 1925-1927. Classics issued two Miff Mole, 1927 and 1928-1937.
