Masterhit is fine. It is 7/4 numerous dubious quick post hits that bother. Those are the ones to wipe out! B-) When I noticed the Masterhit item, my first reaction was that 7/4 hat hit some kind of jackpot

Obviously, Mingus is not free. Or not free enough for the producers of the series. Too bad his two releases are not included in this batch. The limited edition status is also questionable since the LP originals were widely available when they came out.

Was that your annual stay in southern France? Oh how I envy you ... Southern France plus northern Spain (mainly Catalunya). Just beautiful. And ready for the autumn season!

Tom, found the 2 CDs when I returned home today. Will give them a serious listen later this week and try to post impressions (and hopefully some guesses) later. Merci beaucoup!

I'll try to check with friends in Toulouse, southern France, where he died in 1981. Pretty sure that his heirs will be happy to get more royalties...

Bol, there are a number of Chet Baker albums titled 'Chet Baker Sings & Plays'. Which one have you are you referring to?

I was in northern Spain this week. Very close to Andorra and I decided to go and visit the area. Three good reasons to do this. Get a good ration of Havana cigars for the upcoming winter, visit the mountains surrounding the main Andorra city and take a look at the record stores there to check on the Definitive/Disconforme scene since the label originates from the city. Just a reminder that Andorra is a taxfree area which attracts hordes of tourists from neighboring Spain and France, most of them looking for cheap booze and cigarettes. The Havana situation was splendid and I bought widely from one of the several cigars stores that grace the main city. The mountains around Andorra are spectacular and since the scenery was bathed in hot sunny weather, the drive up there were magnifico. The record stores however proved pretty disappointing. Could not trace any albums from the Definitive catalogue except for a couple of issues that I had seen before. The scene would have made Chuck Nessa happy! There was only one store with some heavy jazz content. So here is what I purchased: - Mundell Lowe/Tete Montoliu 'Sweet 'n Lovely' (Fresh Sound), - Tete Montoliu/Nuria Feliu '1965/1990' (PDI). That'rs the album that has Booker Ervin appearting on the 1965 tracks. - Tal Farlow 'The Complete Verve' (Mosaic). The single CDs were sold at €11, the Mosaic box at €89 (around $110). The cigar purchases I made were much more interesting.

Most of the Jazz Workshop albums have been reissued by RCA Spain and are available via Fresh Sounds. The only reissue I heard is the Hal McKusick and the sound does not compare - even by far - to the sound of the original LP (or even the French RCA LP reissue).

I missed the birthday date. Hope it was a great one. And many more to come! Happy Birthday

Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions
brownie replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That Columbia Swing Sessions looks more like an Epic Swing Sessions. From the list of participants, many (Braff, Jacquet, Ellis...) recorded for Epic, one of the Columbia labels! -
There was some light rain all day in southwestern France yesterday. Must have pleased the local farmers! Rain should stop later today. It'ld better because I will be driving over the Pyrenees mountains and is spectacular sceneries and head to sunny Catalunya for more holidays...

Aric's spelling is wrong! But he is absolutely right! They should not have removed a great active musician like Bud Shank.

She should be. 'French horns' make good music. Seriously, how good is that album? Found one copy a long time ago but it was in pretty bad shape and the asking price was way above what you paid...

Rachel, lunch was a simple garden tomatoes salad with onions and some garlic followed by an omelet of local 'cepes' mushrooms that grow during the night after the rain. The 'omelettes aux cepes' was enhanced by garlic too! Then a local ewe cheese and some grapes, All washed down with an excellent bottle of white Domaine du Tariquet dry wine from the nearby Cotes de Gascogne! I'm skipping dinner tonight and will prepare for the weekly food market in the main local city (some 2,000 inhabitants) tomorrow. My wife (and I too) is looking to indulge in the local 'bourru', a fermented grape juice that comes with the early wine harvests. 'Bourru' is not wine but it is more than heady! And absolutely delicious. It is drunk in the immediate vicinity of the harvest areas. It ferments so much that it can be served in plastic bottles only. No glass bottle for this beverage! I tried to bring back 'bourru' once back to Paris but this was liking shaking a bottle of champagne during a long travel. The 'bourru' had to be drunk in the early part of the voyage and since I was the driver I had to choose between driving or drinking. I'll be drinking the stuff tomorrow Life is sweet!

Currently in southwestern France which was hit by a storm last night. Small damage, no devastation, no victim. I must say I enjoyed watching the night sky light up with the storm outbursts, something that is rarely seen inside Paris. No damage reported so far in the neighboring Sauternes vineyards where the harvesting has not started yet...
