Never saw that one either. It is a 10incher Vogue England cover. Vogue had an exchange agreement with BN at the time and they obviously had access to Mr. Francis Wolff photos. Nice one!

The German forwards played like impotants. They reminded me the French team of two years ago. The 2002 French were beyond impotants. They were non-existent...

When I started messin' around with the Paris jazz scene back in the late fifties, I was still a teenager. I was introduced to grass by musicians and liked it. Problem was it was hard to get and expensive. Usage of grass at the time was nothing like it is nowadays. This made smoking the stuff a pretty rare occurence for me. By the time I reached 20, I was drafted and sent to Algeria for a couple of years in time to witness the end of the war there. I was stationed in a coastal small city halfway between Oran and Algiers. Found pretty quickly there was a steady supply of 'kif' (hashish from Morocco) available from the locals there and I must say it helped make the nights of guard duty - and there were a lot of those - much less painful. But I never became addicted to the stuff. When I came back to civilian life, I just forgot about it. Tried LSD while in New York in the '60s. Interesting experience but once was enough. I was just being curious. Also I must thank a couple of New York jazz musicians who advised me about not getting involved with the stuff. Besides I saw too many musicians I admired wreck their life with drugs. Grass was readily available by then. Smoke good and bad and gave up - except on rare occasions - shortly after. Never smoked cigarettes much. A pack of week must have been the most I ever got into. That was decades ago. The last pack I bought was a couple of years ago and it still is not finished. My drug is cigars. Havana cigars exclusively. Used to smoke a lot of those but I have curtailed this to several a week, depending on the costs, the availability and the mood. When my son (now 26) started smoking grass with schoolfriends, I advised him to be careful with this. Which he did. He is not indulging any more. But I have not been able to persuade him to put an end to his cigarette smoking. No major health problems, although I could shed a number of pounds. I do a lot of walking every day of the year. I still have enough teeth (well almost...) to bite into apples to keep the doctor away. I go see the doctor every three months just to be on the safe side.

My bet: 1.- England vs Netherlands 2.- France vs Czech Republic and then England vs France and then France B) I'll bet on these semifinals: - Portugal vs. Sweden, - France vs. Czech Republic. Then, I'll start praying for the final

The Germans did not deserve to qualify. Their attacks were so disorganized... Until they find suitable replacements for the likes of Rumenigge, Matthaus or Voller, they will be in trouble. That Czech team has impressive reserves. They should go far...

or the Curtis Fuller 'Two Bones' BN album where Slide Hampton confronts his skills with Fuller. The rhythm section was Sonny Clark, George Tucker, Charles Persip. This has not been reissued since its original release in Japan in 1980. That LP listed Al Harewood instead of Persip as the drummer. The session was included in the Fuller Mosaic but it could stand a fresher reissue.

Interesting perspective from 'The New York Times' on the impact of Euro2004.

I can't make it to Paris before the weekend; hope that they'll have at least some things of interest still on sale, and unsold, then. You can forget about the Champs-Elysees stores. But you may try your luck at the FNAC stores at Montparnasse (the Rue de Rennes one) and at Chatelet-Forum des Halles. They usually start their sales a few days after the opening day. Happy hunting!

Credit card transaction seems to have worked. Just a small token of appreciation for being part of this Board! Keep up the good work! -
Today was the start of the Summer sales. Took a break from work and went to the nearby Champs-Elysees to see what was up at Virgin and FNAC. Started with Virgin. The sold items were at 5 euros ($6). Japanese imports at 10 euros. Japanese discs I snatched were: - Ray Crawford 'Double Times' (with Ronnell Bright) - Helen Merrill 'Casa Forte', - George Mraz/Roland Hanna 'In Duet/Porgy&Bess) Others CDs were: - JJ Johnson 'Live in London' (1964 Ronnie Scott date with Stan Tracey), - Stan Getz 'Live in London' (another 1964 Ronnie Scott date with Tracey) - Ben Webster 'No Fool, No Fun' (Storyville), - Rolf & Joachim Kuhn 'Music For Two Brothers' (MPS). Then went to FNAC and arrived just as the jazz section was sorting out the CDs that were going on sales. Everything at 3 euros! I picked up: - Lee Konitz/Peggy Stern 'Lunasea' (Soul Note), - Lee Konitz/Peggy Stern 'The Jobim Collection (Philology), - Art Farmer-Phil Woods Together 'What Happens' (Camjazz) - London Improvisers Orchestra 'The Hearing Continues' (Emanem 2CD set), - Evan Parker 'London Air Lift' (FMP), - Dusko Goykovich/Tete Montoliu 'Ten To Two Blues' (Ensayo), - Duke Ellington 'The Treasury Shows', vol. 4 (DETS 2CD set) Pretty sure that by midafternoon there will be nothing left at both places!

Marcus wrote: [quote} brownie, please don't remember me the WC2002...i have 3 major disappointments in life: 1) to loose the semifinal in 1982 against Germany.... 2) the disaster of the WC 2002 and having Brazil clinching their 5th title.... 3) to loose against Bulgaria in 1993 and not going to WC 1994 France did not loose against Germany in 1982. Schumacher just knocked out Patrick Battison who was going to score the victory goal. You don't mention the 1986 World Cup. With the right coach, we could have wom that one. We had the best team with the great Michel Platini. Too bad that coach Henri Michel could not control his players. Best match I ever attended (was there on assignment and did not see all of the match but I still remember the whole structure of the stadium at Guadalajara shaking every time there was action close to the goalmouths) was the France-Brazil quarterfinals match. Those penalty kicks that gave France victory! And the utter despair of the wonderful Brazilian fans!

Me speak spanish??? The answer is NO! To my utter shame and despite dozens of visits to this beautiful country, I have barely managed to grasp a few words. I just include some of the spanish words I know from time to time. It's supposed to make me sound smart but I'm just dumb! -
Are you speaking about the Bill Hardman first album under his name on Savoy. Savoy had red labels. Wasn't Schlitten briefly involved with Signal records that were released by Savoy?

Thanks to Michael Fitzgerald, this is the full list of Onyx releases: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/onyx.htm

European Board Members Meeting

Nothing I can do but go with that suggestion. As for Rockefeller Center's reservations, let me tell him that German-speaking people are welcome here ever since after the end of World War Two and I have yet to hear of one of them not being able to survive here. From those I know, they're just doing fine... -
Horace Silver composed 'Nica's Dream'. The Columbia Jazz Messengers album is just magnificient...

Vergogna! Italians are out in the first round. Now if the Sweden-Denmark even score is to be questioned and if some suggest this was fixed to have those two teams go to the second round, their exciting match was played by fine actors. As far as I am concerned, both Denmark and Sweden deserved to go to the quarterfinals!
-
I'll have to relisten to the full album (no problem). Kelly plays an organ solo on 'I Didn't Know About You'.

But would French posters be invited? -
No, that's not it. But I would have plenty to tell a shrink about this slip if I saw one. Don't fell the need to B) A better edit could fixed this!

Going back and forth from one game to the other. At least three channels from the cable TV system are broadcasting the Italy-Bulgaria match. I have to watch the Denmark-Sweden match relayed on Algerian TV (with arabic speaking commentaries) and spend more time watching this exciting match. Much better than the Italian match. The Italiam tactics arfe even more frustrating than the French ones. What a beauty that Danish goal was! Caught the Bulgarian penaly shoot. The Italians are in bad shape. Not a good match. Will spend even more time watching Algerian TV for the second half.

We're talking about track 9, right? That track is a mind blower. Can't recall having heard this before. Sounds like some Basieites are there (Jo Jones, Sweets). But this goes on sans Basie. And of course, it's not Carter! We'll get the album with this jam when the Truth is revealed...

The sixth track (not included in the original LP) was titled 'Allison's Uncle' when it was released for the first time (on a Japanese LP) and in later editions. It has been given its correct title 'Bangoon' in the latest editions of this classic.

The eyes of the Italians will be on the Sweden-Denmark match tonight. With plenty of suspicion... From AP:
