Yep, yep. And there are no police cats

Call me crazy, but I do belive that O.J. did it, and that the LAPD planted evidence to make sure they got a conviction. Just living in SoCal for so long gives me a creepy feeling about LAPD. That might not be impossible. Not at all. But the whole thing is creepy! Just the simple fact that Simpson could get away with a 'not guilty' sentence is just as creepy!

Guilty, no doubt about it! He also turned a great performance in court.

From the clothes everybody wears, the photos were taken during the winter. The Cote d'Azur concerts date from July 1966. The photos were probably taken at around that time but not at Nice airport which is the Cote d'Azur one. Looks much more like Orly airport which was the main Paris airport then.

expat bass player Kent Carter arrested in France
brownie replied to alankin's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The April 2 arrest of the ETA suspect was frontpage news in many newspapers in Spain the following day. It was also primetime news on Spanish TV where any arrests in the ETA ranks gets priority treatment. The arrested man known as Mobutu had previously escaped from a forced residency in central France a few months earlier. Mobutu was one of the top men in the ETA ranks. Had no idea that Kent Carter was involved in such an adjacent way to this story. The photographer who covered this story was at the houses outside Angouleme but Kent Carter and his wife had already been taken away. This photographer is very knowledgeable about these ETA arrests and its consequences. He says that the travel restrictions that fell on Kent Carter and his wife may take quite a long time to get resolved. What a mess! -
I, too, had thought about that. To me, it sounded like a Jim McNeely arrangement (or a Bob Brookmeyer one) for the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra or the Danish Radio Big Band. But I could not find anything similar among my records. Luca This track grows on me! I thought about a Swedish connection and did a search but could not find anything. Nice one from Daniel for unearthing this!

Another case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. And pretty typical of some of the quasi horror stories that emerge from what happens at the periphery of current police actions in France nowadays. The search and arrest of ETA suspects is one of the French police current priority. Too bad that Kent Carter and his wife were caught in that net. And nothing much that can be done expect be patient, very patient. Messaging at their email adress. -
Sad to hear this. And from reading the posts, I am sorry I never had a chance to listen to his stories. Didn't Red Kelly also played in an early version of the Red Norvo trio (before the Tal Farlow/Charles Mingus one)? Wonder if the third man was also a Red!

The Carmell Jones Select is a wise investment. It brings attention to a very distinctive trumpet player whose albums were pretty hard to find. And those albums all contained outstanding music. Was spinning disc 2 last night and enjoyed it immensely. The unreleased session with Frank Strazzeri and Hadley Caliman on disc 3 is a real discovery. You'll enjoy this Select!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Carmell Jones Select, disc 2 -
'A Blowin' Session' was the second BN album to appear under Griffin's name. First one was 'Chicago Calling' (BN 1533) which had no vol. 1 tag. Third (and last) one was 'The Congregation' (BN 1580) had no vol. 3 tag either.

'Wide Range' is also a good opportunity to listen to Doug Mettome who should have a permanent place in the underrated trumpet players thread. He shines on 'Walkin'' and on a couple of other tunes. But the star of the album is Gene Quill. Larry Kart already mentioned the excellence of his playing on 'Nipigon'. Quill has a number of other solo appearances. 'The Ballad of Tappan Zee' is a feature for his talent and he makes full use of it. The Johnny Richards band seems to have been a haven for second-rank musicians. Hank Jones and Jimmy Cleveland were the only 'big' names that were on this album but soloists of the calilber of Burt Collins, Frank Rehak, Jim Dahl, Frank Socolow are allowed to contribute. Favorite side from this album is 'Cimarron' which is basically a showcase for the exceptional trombone section of Cleveland, Rehak and Dahl. I still remember Willis Conover playing this track on his VOA broadcasts in the late fifties. It still sounds very exciting. Can't say the same about the final track, Richards's bestselling 'Young At Heart', (it was a huge hit by Frank Sinatra at the time) which sounds corny despite solos from Collins, Quill, Socolow and piccolo player Billy Slapin who duels with the french horn of Al Antonucci. Johnny Richards' writing could be grandiloquent at time but he knew how to make his band swing! And his orchestrations (with innovative use of the brass sections with tuba, french horns plus bass saxophone) set the right challenge for the soloists. The Mosaic Select should permit a full reeavulation of this forgotten orchestra.

If you like old photographs, as I do

Very interesting site. And also quite fascinating that there's nothing that seems even remotedly related to jazz (or any other arts) in a city where the performing arts were an important part of the social life. -
The MPS reissues series from Germany is at long last available in France. Purchased the following: - Hans Koller Big Band - New York City, - Hans Koller - Kunstkopfindianer, - Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band - Fellini 712

How 'bout a Terry Gibbs 50's/60's Mercury Mosaic?
brownie replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Excellent idea! However the Terry Gibbs Dream bands that came out on Mercury and Verve are now being reissued by Contemporary. The 'Explosion' album on Mercury is now available as 'The Big Cat', volume 5 of the TG Dream Band series on Contemporary. -
'Don't Take Your Love From Me' has been a favorite ballad by Ike Quebec. It's on the 'Blue And Sentimental' album. Quebec on slow ballads had few equals. Wish he and Dexter had recorded a duet album!

Now everybody just relax. This is a rare phenomenon. Venus going past the Sun won't happen again until next June 6, 2012. And then on December 11, 2117

Joyeux anniversaire Bertrand Hope you have a great day! Know that you will spin some McLean today! Or will it be some Wayne Shorter? Probably both

The Village Voice has a review of the box in their edition just out today http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0423/hull.php The photo that goes with the article is one of a series of images I took when Jimmy Lyons played with the Cecil Taylor Unit at the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul de Vence in July 1969. The Village Voice managed to mispell my name

What have you learned from being on this forum?
brownie replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
I have broadened my interest in jazz since I joined this Forum. I had followed the adventures in the free jazz movement since its early days but had been bypassed by some of its later diversity and had returned (confined?) to the safety of well treaded pathes. The enthusiasm of the younger generation of posters (and some older ones!) has reawakened my own enthusiasm in the current developments. One of my deepest regret is that there was no equivalent to an internet jazz forum when I was a young man trying to learn more about jazz!
