Thanks to all for their comments. I'd hoped Marc Myers would have said something along the lines of "Percy France was a fine tenorist who didn't get the attention he deserved. Check out this site that tries to correct that." Instead, one sentence, Dan Gould has a tribute site, go here. That's a ringing endorsement.

WOH! You're not traveling around the world anymore? Had no idea. Where did you settle or was there always a home base you just never stopped over at? Glad you adopted so well.

Marc Myers plug in JazzWax coming this weekend.

Well the time is finally here. I have launched the Percy France Memorial Website: http://percyfrance.info I'd like to thank first everybody who contributed to the Go Fund Me campaign, it was greatly appreciated. I am very pleased with the end result. There are essays and remembrances from many people who knew Percy, and the Sessionagraphy uses photos (80% or more never seen before) and clips from publications plus details on all gigs with known recordings, to tell the full story of his career. And I attempted to include at least one audio clip for every session, usually two, so you can hear Percy's saxophone mastery. Please take a look when you get a chance. I hope people find it engaging and enjoyable, though I know there will be many visitors who spend about 90 seconds and leave. Do let me know what you think and do watch this page as the Summer of Percy France is going to have more highlights than just my website. Edit to add: Site is NOT optimized for smartphone viewing. Best seen on a PC or tablet.

John, I'm glad that while it's involuntary, it's not something that is scrambling your financial picture. I think the consultant thing isn't a bad idea but I would frankly think about going into it as, "if I adjust and like having free time, I'm just gonna call it a career". If you really find out that you want to work, make it something that won't be stressful. It might not have been planned or expected but this could be a good change in the end.

I enjoy them both but apples are a little more of an all-year fruit. Make mine Fuji. And if its the ultimate in fruit, make mine white peach or white nectarine. -
Same as "sand". I have some concert recordings with Plas with intro tracks and that's how they said it.

Just realized how I could have provided a little amusement for Mosaic for this box, for those of you who followed my last BFT from January. Joe trying to land some pot in some unknown location (at 12:30 at night). Ben was his local connection to provide some "smokage".

Well I could dream, but in all seriousness, for me, Kenny Drew was the ultimate accompanist for Dex. I do have to keep my Dexaholic Card active so I will watch this space for someone to tell me its on pre-order at Amazon.

I like the setlist (can't recall too many times Dex took on Green Dolphin St or Hi-Fly) but really prefer anyone else to Cables in this group. I'm sure I'll be in for it though ... suddenly occurred to me I could always make my own edits and re-burn, fade out on Cables, in when Dex returns. YMMV, but I tell ya, if I had thought of that sooner I'd have kept the Uptown release of this group, because the problem with Cables "taking it where we want to, Dex didn't care (paraphrasing here)" was especially egregious, IMHO, on ballads.

Covid Vaccination Poll Update
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I am not talking about whether they should get vaccinated. I am saying that the mask-opposed are more likely to have natural immunity and that is part of why we are, at this time, doing rather well, despite loosening or elimination of restrictions. Also, I don't think the first half of your sentence is entirely accurate on either point. -
And looking at it I see what Brad references ... it's not the Gazette as it existed but is like a series of record reviews/essays. Not helpful for me.
-
I really, really, hope that they keep the Gazette email, for the simple fact that when percyfrance.info launches in a very short time frame, I was counting on a little rub from Michael to drive some traffic. I can't rely on Organissimo + Facebook, I am counting on the Gazette and Marc Myers blog too.

Covid Vaccination Poll Update
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think (hope) that everyone is missing just how many people do have natural immunity from having had it. That is the best explanation (IMO) for the vastly lower rates we now see, even though vaccination efforts are running out of willing arms and skeptics (as opposed to the implacably opposed) now are free to run around without masks in most places. -

FYI: The governor of Texas ended the mask mandate March 2 and was called a neanderthal who was signing death warrants of Texans. Since he ended the mask mandate Texas has crushed the virus about as well as any other state. And there was no surge in cases afterwards (he also lifted restrictions on business capacities). This chart ends in early April but the rates have only gone lower and flatter since. -
Anyone pay attention to lyrics? It's a story about a guy misled by a girl about her age, and when he finds out he tells her to go home. With all the charms of a woman You've kept the secret of your youth You led me to believe you're old enough To give me love And now it hurts to know the truth [Chorus] Whoa, oh, oh, young girl Get out of my mind My love for you is way out of line Better run, girl You're much too young, girl About the only creepy thing is that he implies that if she doesn't go home he may give in and "change my mind". I knew this one what is the other offensive hit he had?

Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse
Dan Gould replied to Mark13's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Too bad its his partner at Resonance who is the big Gene Harris fan. Otherwise I'd have hope that sometime on the horizon we'd see this treatment given to the Three Sounds engagement at the It Club. -
@danasgoodstuff Did you read anything about the law that Bresna referenced? It makes it pretty clear that the revision to the existing law was crucial, and that this was a major advance in "free speech" rights as interpreted. And by the way, her claims CAN BE FALSE. There is no 'proof' whatsoever about the truth of her claims, other than sex having occurred after she turned 18. This was most certainly not a case of "the truth is an absolute defense", like, at all. It comes down to, you can give your opinion in a public space, about "abuse" and "grooming" and "no sex, no work", with the intention of harming him, and get away with it ... simply because its your opinion that you were "groomed" and "abused" and that Coleman not hiring her for a gig was due to "not giving him what he wanted sexually".
-
That's inevitable if some people are not 100% convinced that she is a victim and he is guilty of everything. You know there are shades of gray in life, and as I said up above no one knows the full truth. Some judge him very harshly by his actions and that is fine. But not everybody is going to be so harsh, or so certain where all blame lies.

I honestly didn't realize that the law required that someone who alleges damages has to be found a non-public figure. I absolutely think he should have been allowed to proceed ... anyone with a 40 year career even a niche entertainment field ought to be a "public" figure. It's actually an interesting Catch-22 when you think of it. If he had been found a "public figure" he could have moved forward ... but then the standard to prove damages applies for public figures, right? Which I believe are reckless disregard for the truth and actual malice.
