COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was going to post what Felser did ... this suggests: 1. Social Distancing isn't strong enough or is not effective for some reason; 2. We're turning it off too soon, and there's no basis for re-opening if these are the actual predictions even as we start to re-open. Do these predictions anticipate big spikes in cases and deaths? 3. Its time for a sprint to herd immunity. Even as I know that this could swamp the medical system. We can't lock down tighter and maintain it for months on end. Might as well give in to the inevitable. -
Blue Note NY Sharing Archived Concerts
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
It was B.B. at his own club on Saturday, the Neville Brothers yesterday. Today back to the Blue Note for what looks like a nice concert: Happy Birthday Ron Carter!! Today Ron Carter is 83 years old. In honor of his birthday we are positing the Ron Carter Quintet performance from August 5th, 1999. Ron Carter, bass Houston Person, Sax Stephen Scott - piano Payton Crossley - drums Steve Kroon - percussion -
Tom of Tommy's Jazz has contact with the son. Maybe he'll post a response if he's able.

Quite cool. I'd like to know how often Tina played there, if this guy was the organist thru out, and particularly what was played. Were there Brooks originals that (probably) had been recorded at that point but not released until the Mosaic set? Was it a lot of grits n gravy organ standards?

Don't ya love when you stumble upon something that seems impossibly obscure then snag it within minutes of finding out about it? I don't even recall why but this morning I was scrolling thru an Eddie Johnson discography and came to this: Jazz Chicago Style Chicago, 1992 Dippermouth Blues* Ameritech CD Singin' the Blues* Ameritech CD Struttin' with Some Barbecue* Ameritech CD Do Nothing till You Hear from Me Ameritech CD Lover Man* [NR voc] Ameritech CD Seven Come Eleven* -1 Ameritech CD Everyday I Have the Blues* [EG voc] Ameritech CD In and Out -3 Ameritech CD All of Me -2 [NR voc] Ameritech CD Nature Boy Ameritech CD Red Top Ameritech CD Freedom Jazz Dance Ameritech CD This historical overview of Chicago jazz was made specially for Ameritech (a large regional telecommunications company, one of the "Baby Bells," with headquarters in Chicago) in 1992. A few minutes later and I am paying less than $5 with free shipping. Thank you Ameritech for putting out a CD featuring Eddie Johnson (not to mention our own Paul McKee, John Young, Brad Goode).

Weird I composed a reply this morning at Mom's but it didn't post? Anyway thanks for the info; if he doesn't already, hopefully Phil has someone taking care of orders on the site. I need to check Amex online both to verify the charge (and start the clock per Justin) and also ... I hate to admit it ... but to be sure nothing questionable happens with the card. I went ahead with the order despite the lack of the padlock insignia, https URL, and the fact that the browser was showing "nonsecure". Hey, on the last screen it only showed the last four numbers. Gotta be secure, right?
-
Well I should be verifying that the charge went thru and also start monitoring my Amex charges online ... I kinda can't believe I did that but yes, I clicked submit even though the browser didn't have the lock insignia and said unsecure. I just figured it's easy enough to watch for bad charges, I am set up for an alert on charges over $200 and I'm tired of this same amex number since 1987. Seriously though I hope Phil is ok, and also that he has someone handling orders or I may just never see the order at all.
-
Did you at least get a shipping notification? I am wondering how a check requires such meticulous packaging! Anyway I have been curious about the 45s listed on the Jazz Sessions label which I assume was Phil's, especially ones by Harold Ashby and George Kelly. They seem super rare, discogs doesn't even have them listed. Getting some gift cards from work moved me onto trying to get them. (I figure I might even flip these on eBay after and make some or all of the cost back.)
-
Do you recall getting a confirmation email as promised? I ordered something on the site today and am stressing as nothing came over leaving me to wonder if it's now a ghost site taking credit card info.

Not really a mortician ... your statement made it sound like he needed a new career and got himself licensed to be a mortician. He was an investor in the business, sounds more hands-on than before. But not a licensed mortician.

So you presume all people have access to lands on which to hunt, the necessary skills with a firearm (or perhaps a bow and arrow) as well as the ability and willingness to skin/carve that which is dispatched. Apparently a country boy will survive and thinks everybody else has gone country already. No, no and no. And no. I don't know exactly what is going thru these meat processing plants. I'll do without the sliced ham or turkey products if necessary. But if our pork/chicken/beef options are going thru there and they shut and stay shut, then yeah, I will be a forced vegan. -

And you think that enforced vegan-ism won't lead to a cascade of other shortages? -
I only know what you see on his FB post.

Not Where the Hell is Phil Schaap but how the hell did he end up a Jeopardy answer? This was April 29 at least according to his FB post. If you go to the thread you can also see someone's clip of the video. (and yes someone correctly answered "Count Basie") https://www.facebook.com/pg/philschaap/posts/

Shopping for only two it hasn't been terrible. Both times TP became near-critical my wife was able to get to Walmart early enough in the AM to get two large packages (second one was for her aunt and uncle living in the apartment over the barn). But I have yet to see any available stock on TP whenever I have gotten to a Publix, and often only a small remainder of store-brand paper towels left, too, or just a completely empty paper goods aisle. I have to admit I am a little concerned for the future availability of meat; for that we go to Sam's and it hasn't been a total bust yet but who knows? Right now plenty on hand but I am thinking I need to plan a trip earlier than normal to avoid total supply failure. -
I am not even 100% sure I really parted with it or not; when I am back home if I find it maybe I'll give another listen and reconsider. Who knows maybe Peter will be the lonely one now.

Blue Note NY Sharing Archived Concerts

75 minutes or so of Sonny at the BB King club just went up. What other things they have from BB's to share? This weekend we are going to post a few of the Legendary musicians who we had the pleasure of presenting at B.B. King's. Jazz Legend Sonny Rollins performed at BB Kings on September 21, 2002 Sonny Rollins, Sax Tommy Campbell, Drums Kimanti Dinizulu, Percussion Stephen Scott, Piano Clifton Anderson, Trombone Bob Cranshaw, Bass -
Not as enthused as you Larry but Swang was more enjoyable to me than any of the big band tunes on the April BFT. Pretty much had me at that bass figure, its a style that I am likely to enjoy. And in my opinion its not a track that needs to "go" anywhere. Its a mood setter which is nicely augmented by the solos. I was less impressed by the other two youtube clips, and they helped me understand what your friend was getting at (liked Cyann a little better). Not sure I'd want a CD of that style of writing but you're friend was pretty brutal and I am not sure she deserved that -especially "a good teacher would help". What, her teachers have all sucked?

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/we-still-dont-know-how-the-coronavirus-is-killing-us.html Pull quote: In a fantastic survey published April 17 (“How does coronavirus kill? Clinicians trace a ferocious rampage through the body, from brain to toes,” by Meredith Wadman, Jennifer Couzin-Frankel, Jocelyn Kaiser, and Catherine Matacic), Science magazine took a thorough, detailed tour of the ever-evolving state of understanding of the disease. “Despite the more than 1,000 papers now spilling into journals and onto preprint servers every week,” Science concluded, “a clear picture is elusive, as the virus acts like no pathogen humanity has ever seen.” -

I was thinking that same thought - I don't think that there's any doubt that deaths are undercounted because of the surge in deaths at home - but is it a case of so many dying from strokes while hanging out at home, afraid of going to the hospital? What it does show is that the virus can kill you in many different ways, and that must complicate the success of different treatments as well as the ability to ultimately generate a vaccine. I know I'd feel better to know something about the true number of cases that are mild, and really just like the flu, if we could test accurately for anti-bodies and know what percentage have had it and recovered. I see the numbers on the news of how many have recovered but if so many more had it and weren't tested, that number must also be higher. How much higher is one known-unknown. -
