New Stan Levey Biography
Dan Gould replied to fasstrack's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I have to say I didn't notice repetition; it is a quick read but I think it depends on the substance you are looking for. The book I've switched to is "Quintet of The Year" in which the author uses the Massey Hall concert as the fulcrum of a five-way biography of the participants - a chapter devoted to their pre-Massey Hall lives, the concert itself, and chapters devoted to their remaining lives after the concert. A fine concept for a book it also spends a long time dissecting each recording session of every participant. There's definite repetition when you consider how often one session featured at least two and sometimes more of the principals. This kind of substance is definitely lacking from the Levey book. Interesting too is the fact that Levey rates barely above a footnote in this discussion of bebop's origins. Roach is the only drummer of consequence, Levey is just a replacement when Roach is unavailable. Bottom line, to me is that these are different books with different purposes; the Levey is worthwhile and not just because I got a "Like New" copy for less than $10 including shipping. -
His association with Joe Williams got me interested in his solo work many years ago. Glad to be reminded of these, I should definitely pull them out and enjoy them again.

New Stan Levey Biography

Got this in my birthday order from Amazon and finished it rather quickly. Definitely recommended, the author had access to audio tapes Levey made about his life and that brings Stan's voice to the fore. The author may not be a musician or musically inclined but I certainly didn't notice any errors to the level of those Grant Green's daughter-in-law spouted. I'm still kicking myself for never getting around to ordering "The Original Original" DVD which now seems very rare and not even up on youtube. But I'm glad to at least read Stan's recollections and thoughts if not being able to hear them. -

Girardi said they didn't have super-slow mo replay until it was too late, and that as former catcher he is especially cognizant of pitchers in a rhythm and not wanting to mess up his guy with a challenge. So am I going to get any credit for my Red Sox prediction? Pretty sure I said the same thing a year ago, and lo and behold, they were swept out then too. -

I'll say it now: Back to back ALDS dismissals via sweep. They've sucked for a week plus. Their "ace" hasn't pitched like an ace in about three weeks. And they are apparently planning to run out Doug F-ing Fister for game 3. When do the Cubs play? -
Should post this under Great Finds too but, I've been on a major Larry Davis (blues guitarist/vocalist) kick, having tracked down his Virgo 45s (never knew BB King had his own label, and chose Davis as his first release?). Anyway stumbled across another Davis 45 on ebay, on the True Soul label. Discogs said it was the guitarist, not the Philly-area soul singer, so I bit on Pourin Water on a Drowning Man b/w Tears of Sorrow. As fine a singer as Davis was I didn't figure he'd make me forget Mr. Carr's rendition, but he handles it well in his own style, the cut is just hurt by dated backing. But the flip? Holy sh&t! Pure slow blues with a very fine sounding pianist, and a bit of Davis' guitar at the end. This is like the greatest B-side I've ever heard. Wish I could post a youtube link but can't find one ...

It's taken me two autumns to get it into my thick skull, but I've finally learned that 2/3 of Tampa-area rain comes between June 1 and September 30. Haven't really seen a drop in temp yet but I'm cool with almost no rain. No rain means much less grass cutting.

Gene Phillips Swingin' the Blues (Ace) to be followed by the second volume, Drinkin' & Stinkin' So glad I took a chance on these when Norton Records had their big 50% off CDs sale. Fine guitarist doing the jump blues/Louis Jordan thing.

Well that's definitely a "I had no idea he hadn't died already" name.

Oh give him March too. February is so small.

This Cub fan certainly enjoyed the last two nights, celebrating on Cards turf, then eliminating them from playoff contention. I always hear how "nice" Cards fans are but my experience of many of them (and I'll cop to the fact that this is online interaction, and mostly away from this site) is that their attitude towards Chicago is exactly the same as Yankee fans attitudes toward Boston, pre-2004: Losers. How dare you mention them in the same breath as our team? So a little attitude adjustment, or just plain payback, is a good thing. Meantime my other team looks pathetic and would be the weakest playoff team in the AL if not for the Twins. I am expecting the same ignominious dismissal this year as last year, unless the whole damn team starts performing again next week. -

Kids will be kids. At least they are kids with a lot of baseball skill. -
What is your least favorite album by a favorite musician?

Some of you still remember me as the Gene Harris Fanatic. Well I am here to tell you to stay far away from: Yesterday, Today Tomorrow (Blue Note) Now I could certainly have gone with Astral Signal or In a Special Way, but just looking at the credits gives you all the proof you need that those will be bad examples of Gene, and hopelessly indicative of the era they were recorded in. And no, I don't want to hear from fans, thank you very much. But YTT is a special case, as the tracks that are indicative of "Yesterday" are perfectly OK, far from the greatest Three Sounds but not that far off. But when we get into the Today tracks and then the Tomorrow tracks its a total storm. Also, I believe it was Tony Jerant who put "Something" on an early BFT, which I hated, and also whiffed on the fact it was Gene Harris. So I hated YTT before, but I really hated it after. Now if you'll excuse me I am going to revisit those "Yesterday" tracks. I think I particularly dug Hymn to Freedom, IIRC. -
Still kicking around a track lifted from a porno he scored, for a BFT. Whoever identifies who is moaning gets extra credit.

Perhaps embarrassing (so to speak)

I am reminded of the joke about the Wonder Bra (when it comes off, you wonder where her b**bs went). Nice to know there's a product with the same bait & switch result, only women are the ones wondering where that body part went. Equality! -
Better left unexplained. He didn't think the discussion of his topic was fair or reasonable and regretted posting it.

The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!

Lock is on four of 20 tracks, recorded across five consecutive festival days. There's no obligation for you to offer something because someone sent something to you, just a thread for anyone who has something they are willing to give away. Like me, with this one. -
Jay McShann - Milt Buckner, Kansas City Memories (Black & Blue) I have all the other McShann Black & Blues so why did I sleep on this one? Maybe not wanting another pianist/organ with Jay? I am clueless but this is another great session, they blend together beautifully, and Gatemouth and Arnett Cobb are featured on half the tracks.
