  1. Updated for all requests received, so UP for a final sweep of the remainder. Or else I reserve the right to spread out what's left among the seven current recipients. If I didn't mention it to everyone, shipping date is a week from this Saturday, May 21.
  2. No idea where unless I went searching for the text file that accompanied it but I bet others are familiar with this recording and could tell you.
  3. UP, as I have a new batch of 80 discs. Post here or send PMs.
  4. I guess I am in between Chuck and Paul. Living the casual, work-at-home country life, if I only wear socks while working out and afterwards walk around sockless in my docksiders, then I'll probably wear those same socks the next day when I work out. But if I am wearing socks the whole day the surely go in the hamper in the evening.
  5. And here he is, "King": Can you believe how big those paws are? He may grow so large we'll have to decide his namesake is Albert King, not B.B. But B.B. it is, and now the plan is for the next one to be a female, to be named Lucille. Get it? He's been a beasty child and a delight so far; in other words, a puppy. Maybe the best thing about him is how much happier Gracie is with him in the house. Since we moved, Gracie's separation anxiety has gotten worse and whenever Sue went to the barn to take care of the horses she would pace and howl her unhappiness, just as she did when Coltrane wasn't home. Now, for two days with King, she just sits by the door waiting for Sue, no crying, no howling.
  6. Funny how no one knew anything of a shoulder injury when he went on the DL, figured it was a case of "sucks - itis" and now he's facing shoulder surgery and likely gone for the season. Here's to a successful rehab, a solid 2017 spring training, and godspeed at his next destination when the Sox unload his salary for a (small) bag of equipment.
  7. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/175488010/david-ortiz-makes-good-on-home-run-promise What a story. Shades of The Babe (or Paul O'Neil/Seinfeld).
  8. Thanks to all for participating. Without any further adieu … Track 1: “Bear Tracks” (Teddy Edwards) Teddy Edwards Tentet, Angel City (Unissued Clover Session) From Joe Castro, Lush Life (Sunnyside) Edwards, tenor sax, Freddie Hill, trumpet, Lou Blackburn, John Ewing, Lester Robertson, trombone; Jack Wilson, piano, John Gray guitar, Leroy Vinegar bass, Carl Lott drums Track 2: “Bag's Groove” Howard McGhee Quintet Europa Jazz 1056 Howard McGhee, Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Billy Taylor piano; Gene Taylor bass, Connie Kay drums There was much discussion about this one and you may very well question why I stuck to my guns about the source of this recording. Very simple: It's from Europa Jazz 1056, not Europa Jazz 1039 which is what HP figured it must be. And in addition, this is the version that actually correctly identifies the tune as 'Bag's Groove'. And for that matter says it was recorded in 1960. Anyway, there was probably a third trumpeter – I won't contradict more learned ears than mine – and its probably Thad. But I can only go by what's in front of me. Turns out it was the perfect BFT track. Track 3: Ah, the biggest mystery of all. I'd like to point out my promised “hints” post: “As for #3 I can't help but think it unfortunate that some have crapped all over the leader's presumably hand-picked band.” This was actually a hint. I went on to make reference to “shit yourself” and “SOL”. I did this in the hopes that someone might have a brainstorm that went like this: Crap → Bowel Movement → BM → Billy Mitchell. Hey if I went with “Detroit” or “Basie” it would have been all over. And Jim, who has posted more about bowel movements than anybody, missed it. Sorry buddy. Too clever, and tasteless too? Perhaps. “Now's The Time” Now's The Time: Billy Mitchell Live (Catalyst) Mitchell, tenor & alto; Earl May bass; Roland Prince, electric guitar; Wes Belcamp piano; Al Beldini (drums) Since the drummer got a lot of guff, I should mention that Ron Turso plays drums on all other tracks. Track 4: “Politely” (Hardman) Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Jazz Messengers '70 (Catalyst) Blakey, drums; Bill Hardman, trumpet, Carlos Garnett, tenor sax; Joanne Brackeen, piano, Jon Arnett, bass. Until I found this I did not know there was documentation of Brackeen's time in the band. Track 5: “Where or When” Lucky Thompson Mood in Blue (Urania) Thompson, tenor sax; Billy Taylor, piano, Oscar Pettiford, bass, Osie Johnson, drums I am going with my source of this track, as it came from my father's library. I never noticed it before he had died and while he enjoyed jazz he didn't have much of a collection. This and the Ella and Louis collaborations were about it. Track 6: “Breakin the Ice” Gene Ludwig Trio + Bill Warfield Big Band Duff's Blues, Live from the Zoellner Arts Center This was a download so I don't have much info. http://www.amazon.com/Duffs-Blues-Live-Zoellner-Center/dp/B001BRZ57Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461974411&sr=8-1&keywords=gene+ludwig+big+band Track 7: “Please Send Me Someone to Love” John Wright, Wright Changes and Choice +1 (Interplay Records) Wright, piano, Chris Giles, bass, Steve Carow, drums First of the Gene/Not Gene tunes but few played that game. But it tripped up Thom, so it served its purpose. Track 8 “Senor Blues” Youtube video – 100 Magic Fingers concert, Japan Gene Harris plays first and Roger Kellaway second. I thought it was real interesting to hear Kellaway's on a tune like this, not what I expected from him, but really no one paid attention to this selection anyway. Ah well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfNIVdnz1FQ Track 9: Blue Monk Scott Hamilton Meets Jesper Thilo Another download so I don't have much more info. Track 10: “Funky Blues” Joe Castro Big Band, Reflection (Unissued Clover Session) Joe Castro Lush Life (Sunnyside) soloists: Teddy Edwards, Joe Castro, Conte Candoli, Leroy Vinegar Jim asked if it was Teddy Edwards bookends when he figured out number one, but no one realized just how much of a bookend: Both tracks come from the Joe Castro box set, and I had one purpose in mind: exposing this fine music in hopes that others will go out and purchase the set. There are more Castro tapes and I will continue to hope that more see release if this set is popular enough. http://sunnysidezone.com/album/joe-castro-lush-life-a-musical-journey Thanks again to everyone!
  9. Ted Drewes - there's a name I hadn't thought of in a long time. I remember getting introduced to that place shortly after I came to St Louis for grad school. You're right about the lines, I don't recall going more than a few times because of them. But very very good. Just got a Coldstone Creamery coupon in the email, they've been the place of choice for a while and I think its time to check out the closest one here in central Florida. (Actually my wife was thrilled when Friendly's showed up in Delray Beach shortly after we moved in 2004. They would be the "name" place, ahead of Carvel, during my younger days in CT. Sue loved black cherry sundaes.)
  10. Thom, Thanks for participating, you always have interesting things to say. I was hoping you might put Jim out of his misery on #3 but we're still Shit-out-of-luck on that one. Can MG show up and come up with it? Yeah, maybe if it didn't sound too much like jazz. I am sure you'll scroll thru the thread to see what was ID'd; unfortunately #7 was a very good "Not Gene" track that you missed. And I think you'll kick yourself not to recognize Teddy Edwards (twice!). But excellent instincts on Lucky Thompson.
  11. Shipped in the US for delivery today too. Can't wait ...
  12. Further update for interested parties: Next batch - and its a big one - will be posted a week from Sunday, May 8.
  13. Nope.
  14. No no no no and no. But I guess you'll be SOL until/unless you hear it on better speakers than the phone is giving youy.
  15. No. I really think you're going to shit yourself when you find out.
  16. Long Island, NY. Maybe these are mostly guys who couldn't even get gigs in the outer boroughs.
  17. Bassist and maybe the guitarist. I am presuming that the leader selected his bandmates for the gig.
  18. Regarding hints, here's one for #7: He recorded a few times for Weinstock labels, but his career in his hometown continued long past that brief period of national attention. As for #3 I can't help but think it unfortunate that some have crapped all over the leader's presumably hand-picked band.
  19. I was about 7 years old so I had no clue just what that thing that was going on was, I just loved the tune. That, and Age of Aquarius were the biggest songs of my young life, my Mom can attest to that. According to the AP he started out singing jazz including performances with Bird. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/04/24/arts/ap-us-obit-billy-paul.html?module=WatchingPortal&region=c-column-middle-span-region&pgType=Homepage&action=click&mediaId=thumb_square&state=standard&contentPlacement=6&version=internal&contentCollection=www.nytimes.com&contentId=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2Faponline%2F2016%2F04%2F24%2Farts%2Fap-us-obit-billy-paul.html&eventName=Watching-article-click
  20. It only takes one. Not Golson. I have hints for #3 and for "Please Send Me Someone to Love" that are guaranteed to give them away so I am going to hang back until the end of the month, post them on the 29th, to give others a chance.
  21. Ken Dryden and Alankin are going out today, sorry again for the delay; everybody else should have theirs by now for sure. And an update: The next batch should be offered sometime mid-May or slightly beyond.
  22. I'll see what I can come up with the problem is that anything I think of results in me thinking "how can anyone not get it now?"
