  1. Interesting. I was thinking that Black Orchid duplicated the many extras included in the domestic reissue but side by side I see that's not true. These two were issued on the JRVG of It Just Gotta Be.
  2. 1. Zobrist is not a utility player - he's a starter who happens to play all around the field. Aside from 2015 he played in a minimum of 146 games a year for 6 straight seasons. 2. Heywood is a "nice player" only if you're hung up on standard counting stats. Advanced metrics say he's quite a bit more than that and again, at 26 he can be expected to be entering his prime. If he was nothing more than "nice" why would such a smart front office like the Cards offer him even more than the Cubs did? Alex Gordon isn't the worse back up plan but he's still their number two target behind Heywood. And, for all the money they committed, Heywood has not one but two years when he will be able to opt out. If the market looks huge and he puts up power numbers close to his single season high of 27, he can opt out and someone else can take on the risk of him on the wrong side of 30. So long as the Cubs cash in in those first four years I don't think anyone will care that much. As you say, he's just a nice player.
  3. Traditional stats, no. But Heywood is only 26, his defense is tremendous, great OBP skills, steals bases with a high success rate and when you consider the lineup he is joining, he does not need to be big bopper in order for the team to have success. He could easily slot in behind Zobrist and bat 2nd, two table-setters in front of Rizzo and all the rest. The Cubs would be in fantastic shape if they'd gotten David Price but this is a pretty great off-season for a team that won 97 games and eliminated the two teams that won more and ended up in LCS. World Champions or Bust, and I bet they do it in the next 2-3 years.
  4. Wait a bleepin' minute, Hank's Workout has unissued tunes? Or are they tracks that came out elsewhere domestically, like on Another Workout? If there's Hank to be had from the Workout session I got to get on this fast.
  5. I purchased his Black & Blue release, Standing at the Crossroads as a cheap Amazon d/l and really been enjoying it. In addition to excellent guitar and vocals, that guy had a real way with down tempos. So I am interested in recommendations from the rest of his catalog. How is the Delmark release? Anything else as good or better than the Black & Blue? As always, thanks in advance!
  6. Red Sox breaking open John Henry's piggy bank isn't surprising but Price has a lot of mileage on that arm. If his elbow blows up they'll be paying a lot of money for declining performance and most likely they get declining performance anyway. Best scenario might be a championship in the first three years and Price opts out, let the Yankees enjoy the declining return on investment. The only difference between Price and Sabathia is that no one looks at Price and predicts the inevitable physical breakdown that you could with big C.C. I was completely unaware that Dombrowski traded four highly regarded prospects for an elite closer that they control for three years - Kimbrell. Guess I haven't been paying enough attention, or you skip the website tour and miss the news when it breaks. Overall I am OK with the trade as all four are early in their minor league careers and may be good, may not be. The best youngsters still remain in the system, and sliding Koji into the 8th inning definitely makes for a stronger pen for at least on year. After that Kimbrell gives us an elite closer for a couple more, if lesser supporting players to get to him (I'm assuming Koji retires along with Ortiz after this year). Back to Price - I haven't spoken to him but I am sure my brother, the Yankees/Cubs fan, is aggravated that the Cubs have missed out on Grienke and Price - especially Price as he felt the Cubs should have done what was necessary to get him when the Tigers traded him to the Blue Jays instead. They did get Lackey for two years which I think is a good move. I hate the guy personally but he definitely helps the rotation and it's only two years. I'd like to see them throw the money at Cueto to really solidify the rotation.
  7. I'll second Joel on Schneiderman. Nice mainstream recordings on Reservoir (IIRC) with Brian Lynch and/or Ralph Moore.
  8. http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/live_at_carmelos_2-cd_set_+_unreleased_tracks-cd-6363.html These live performances at Carmelo’s were a great experience for me. It was a chance to play with some of my favorite players and, as time has proven, they have become jazz legends. Because of the time limitations of LP’s, we had to choose from 2 nites of recording and only six tunes were picked for the original LP release. Here are some of the other tunes played on that historic live recording. Sam Noto was inown with the Bob McConnell Big Band. Sal Nistico flew in from N.Y.C. and the rest of us were here in L.A. Thanks to the efforts of the late Herb Wong (my good friend) we had the opportunity to record the music of Frank Strazzeri and some of my charts. These charts were originally written for trumpet-tenor-trombone, but after the untimely death of Frank Rosolino everything was put on hold. On these recordings I played the trombone parts on baritone and some on alto. It was curious that all the players on these recordings are from the East coast, and yet everyone considered us “West coasters” (always thought of as the cool school). As you will hear, these takes are anything but cool. My thanks to Jordi and Fresh Sound for re-releasing these recordings. —Don Menza, Los Angeles, October 2015 Anyone familiar with the original Palo Alto release? If it was a good one, more from the same gig should be a nice add-on. And, not a lot of Sal Nistico out there.
  9. I searched high and low before finding that PJ record, and it was well worth it. But it brings to mind a comment that I wish I could reference exactly but it boiled down to a statement that the jazzers on that record very much looked down their noses at Bumble Bee during the session. So, not to change the subject but reading about that, it made me wonder how common that kind of attitude was, that jazz guys thought of people like Bumble Bee as too 'simple' or whatever.
  10. Not to mention the taxes!
  11. On ten acres of land? What does a 1900 sq foot property cost on a 2 acre subdivision?
  12. This is fine to me, as there isn't more than a box worth to go to the new house, and it's no cost to me unless they sell. And I can at least hope that someone will want more than one if they look thru the rest of my modest offering. Thanks.
  13. As mentioned here it looks like I may be moving early in 2016 and I figured if we move it's time to get rid of my poli-sci books from a previous life. Unfortunately a much higher percentage of books are now baseball or jazz/blues related and I don't plan to sell but I decided to check Amazon for pricing. I'd say 1/2 to 2/3 of the poli-sci titles are worth about a penny and should just be sent for recycling. But I found others that appear to be the same printing and have prices of $15 to upwards of $70! And not just one lunatic seller on a lot of these either. Some have three or more listings, all surprisingly high and all within $5 of each other. So my thought is, set up an account and severely under-price these people, then just wait. I'd post that I am clearing out poli-sci text books so if you like these look for the rest of my stock, maybe someone buys multiple items at once that way. My concern is costs, as the fine print tells me $2.34 per item sold, and 15% off the top for 'referral'. But, listings are free until they sell, and I am thinking - but am not sure - that this is more economical than eBay. Thoughts? As always, thanks in advance!
  14. Thanks - there won't be room for as many horses as ducks, but that's the whole reason behind the move - having my wife's horses (two with a third due in the spring) on site rather than paying for room and board.
  15. Sue and I are under contract! http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/7143-S-County-Line-Rd_Plant-City_FL_33567_M50151-54433?cid=eml-SAF-property_detail A lot of ducks have to get in a row but it's a pretty exciting/high stress time at Casa Gould. Best part of this is that the house is way nicer than where we are (and where the neighborhood is worse than it was when we bought 12 years ago) and that I am not changing jobs, I'll actually continue with my current position and work from home. So no 50 mile round trip commute, and no 5:15 alarm setting. And, one of my closest friends lives about 45 minutes away so spending time with him won't be a once or twice a year proposition.
  16. Thanks for this, Tom. I am not the kind of vinyl fetishist to pay out $25 for the vinyl edition, I'll just nab the CD. I was figuring the CD might be late 2016 or even delayed, so the LP made a little sense to get the music early.
  17. Not too many I am sure but if you miss out it's supposed to be a two cd release later next year. My thought has always been that if I bought the LP I'd play it once, transfer it to CDR and then offer it here for about 80% of what I paid. Then I have a sneak peek at the music for a fraction of the money, and someone who really appreciates the Heavy Vinyl - Ltd Edition release can get it for a little less. Win/Win!
  18. Well I got a Dusty Groove newsletter and the Wes Montgomery - Eddie Higgins LP is indeed rescheduled for release on Black Friday. Guess I am stopping at the record store on the way to Naples to visit Mom.
  19. Oh, it sucks even more!!! Been waiting for an LP from an Italian dealer. Since I've noticed eBay sellers who refuse to ship to Italy, I wondered how things would go, coming back this way. Well, it got here, about ten days total which seems a bit long for "International Priority" but it's really the USPS that dropped the ball. See, it was a rainy south Florida Saturday, and we came home from a day trip to find the LP laying flat on the driveway by the garage door, soaked so badly that the cardboard just broke apart in my hands. Jacket ruined. Thanks USPS! NOT!!!!!
