  1. D'OH! Yeah. I've had some of the black cover ones, didn't think the name was the same so it didn't ring a bell immediately. That black label though would have some Roulette dates. It was my source for a Count Basie/Joe Williams small group recording.
  2. Thanks everybody. For my birthday highlights, go here:
  3. Never seen a black cover for the Giganti Del Jazz series! I'll have to check the Ponder LP but I could swear that Blues Bag is identified as a McGriff composition and also says that he plays on it too. But it sounds like it ain't so. As for the Liggins, MG - I am looking forward to this, as I've enjoyed every one of the Blues Spectrum issues in this series and I think I've now found all of the most interesting ones - Pee Wee Crayton, Cleanhead, Charles Brown, Gatemouth Moore, two Johnny Otis, Louis Jordan, Joe Turner, Roy Milton. I think that's all of them but I've been scarfing these up over the last six weeks or so and the Liggins is the one I hadn't found yet.
  4. Benny Carter, Montreux '77 (Pablo) Basie & Zoot (Pablo) Jo Jones, The Main Man (Pablo) Big Joe Turner, In the Evening (Pablo) Big Joe Turner, Things That I Used to Do (Pablo) Bob Thiele & His Orchestra, I Saw Pinetop Spit Blood (Flying Dutchman) Dave Alexander, The Rattler (Arhoolie) Peppermint Harris Featuring Albert Collins, Houston Can't Be Heaven (Ace) The Soul Jazz Giants (Prestige - a bunch of 'previously unissued' tracks that I am sure showed up on OJC CD reissues of the original LPs but I couldn't ignore the price) Jazz Messengers '70 (Catalyst) Earl King & Roomful of Blues, Glazed (Blacktop) Joe Liggins, Great Rhythm and Blues Oldies (Blues Spectrum) Big Joe Turner & Roomful of Blues, Blues Train (Muse) and a bunch of those cheap-looking Il Giganti Del Jazz issues, some of which seem to be grey-market reissues of studio LPs and others are (perhaps) rare live recordings: Jay McShann/T-Bone Walker/Sammy Price (#59) - Are these Black & Blue label recordings? Howard McGhee/James Moody/Zoot Sims - this one is live Lucky Thompson/Cedar Walton/Sam Jones/Louis Hayes (#31) Jimmy Ponder (#28) - this appears to be his Ponderin' album Almost all of what I picked up were $3-$5 and everything was anywhere from VG++ to NM or sealed so I think I did quite well. Thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes. And edit to add: One of the record shops also had a book selection and I found The Sound of Soul by Phyl Garland. Doing a little googling I found out she wrote the liners for Big John Patton, Let 'Em Roll and Jackie McLean's Right Now.
  5. I gotta double check tonight, I don't think I was aware of a Jazztet set, with Duke Pearson on piano.
  6. It's kind of a milestone so um ... Happy Birthday to me? I hate calling attention to myself but it's been a pretty good Birthday weekend so far. I've scored a lot of cheap vinyl on Mom's dime, and best of all, about 4 months ago I scoped out this weekend and saw that the Red Sox were in Tampa so I asked a very good friend if he could score tickets for my 50th B-day weekend. Then last weekend I watched as David Ortiz kept hitting homers and getting closer to #500 I dared to hope that he could be sitting right on the edge for Saturday night's game. Well the seats were as close as I've ever sat, the stars aligned, the baseball gods smiled, and me and my buddy were in the house when Big Papi smacked #s 499 & 500: So I can safely say, Best 50th Birthday Weekend EVAH!
  7. And who thought the Cubbies would keep the defending champions out of the playoffs? In the meantime, the Sox (Red) may still end up in last place but there has to be some excitement over the young talent in the lineup - Mookie Betts, Xander Boegarts, and now all of a sudden Jackie Bradley Jr looks like a potential superstar as his bat has caught up with his already superlative defense. The 27 year old Cuban, Castillo, who they showered so much money on last year looks pretty solid too. I'd love to see JBL take over the lead-off spot from Betts next year, as his minor league stats show how much better he is getting on base than Mookie is. Then they could move Mookie down to a more RBI-oriented spot like 6th or 7th. He should show a little more power than JBL will. Three out of four years in last place, a championship in between, and hope springs eternal!
  8. Thanks, I think I will just go back to the tried-and-true and sign up for the Mach3 subscription service.
  9. Found a 90 second sound clip: https://djfriendly.co.uk/mp3/225498.mp3
  10. Well color me curious. I also wonder what Tommy Turrentine's chops were like at this point. Edit to add: He's not Barry's brother. I found another of his LPs and the liners state that he is one of six and none were named Barry. But I'm still curious, he got some heavyweights to play with him, more than once.
  11. Well I've had my Harry's razors for two weeks and I can report: 1. No issue with rusty razors, without any effort to dry them off after use. My guess would be that perhaps Kevin is on well water rather than city water and that this might make a difference? Anyway no trouble with razors changing color but ... 2. Not thrilled with how long they last - they anticipate one a week and that's how it's worked out. This makes the price difference essentially zero and the only benefit is auto-ship and not counting on Publix to have them in stock when I need them next. 3. Closeness is not ideal. It's close enough right after but the five o'clock shadow, such as it is for a beard like mine, comes around 3 pm. So back to the drawing board, as soon as I cancel the auto-ship of the next batch. I'm going to consider the dollar shave club deal or else price out Mach 3 razors on Amazon, if the price is that much better than local retail that's probably my final answer.
  12. I've tried the web and even my wife's bionic hearing but I can't puzzle out two lines from James Carr's "A Man Worth Knowing". So you guys and gals are my last hope - I got the chords from chordify.net but without the lyrics what are they good for? Certainly not a man worth knowing. Please PM an email address and I'll send you an MP3 along with my guitar tab as it stands today. Thanks so much in advance!
  13. OK, because by this evidence, OP's clothes fit pretty nice too:
  14. I think I know where you're going but care to elaborate?
  15. I got no dog in the OP wars so you knew I had to make it about Gene Harris, right? But seriously, I've often wondered why Gene doesn't get a similar reaction from the anti-OP throng. To me there are many similarities - power, chops up the ying-yang, blues up the ying-yang, certainly a lot of sameness across albums (Larry's find notwithstanding), a long association with Ray Brown . Sally White (of Sally's Place in Westport, CT) loved OP nearly as much as Gene Harris and I have every reason to believe it was for similar reasons. If there was no Gene Harris I suspect I'd have gone much deeper into OP's catalog but since there was a Gene Harris, I get what I need from him. I guess what I am after here is: Why is Gene "The Blues Man" and Oscar the faker? And If any of you have (rational, irrational or post-rational) hatred of Gene Harris, please post. The former Gene Harris Fanatic will still like you.
  16. Maybe so but Chuck, what's the furthest possible distance they could be from Thirdtry? And yet we're still having this conversation? I've picked up a few used classical things from Dusty over the years, I have zero complaints, but it strikes me as highly unusual they weren't immediately driving up there w/ any promises-- including the naming of future children if necessary. (Thirdtry perfect because gender neutral!) If they come through w/ ardent interest & $$$ for Thirdtry, fantastic but... one would think if you own a record store, new & used, w/ more than one employee, THIS is your #1 job, it isn't something "you get to" except ASAP. Moms, it's JRM that doesn't want to travel. Not Dusty Groove.
  17. Has there been a statement that DG won't come to Wisconsin to assess a collection and make an offer? Because I've been getting emails from them that make it sound like they don't at all rely on what walks thru the door for what they purchase.
  18. Anyone else familiar with this guy? I stumbled across one of these recordings at a friendly blog and had to seek out the actual reissue. Strong organ and really excellent vocals, I felt like I'd found an unjustly neglected master of soul/blues. Highly recommended, and only $11.99 at ebreggae.com which is a terrific wholesaler on the west coast with great prices on Ace Records.
  19. Also played the green-skinned alien. I hardly remember batgirl (and she would have been 30 when she was cast in 1967) but I definitely remember the green-skinned alien chick. RIP.
  20. I did see mention of rusting problems in some online comments. It's hard to believe that the company could have such an issue and be successful. I'll definitely be sending the package back if that becomes an issue for me. You get 30 days supposedly.
