  1. I went with Hank, though its a wish more than a reality.
  2. According to Yanow on AMG: The former Gene Harris Fanatic has no trouble understanding what Yanow is saying.
  3. Picked it up at Sally's Place in Westport while visiting the parental units this past week. (good old Sally, isn't getting around as well as she used to but the store is going strong). Looking forward to finally giving this a spin very soon.
  4. Where does this category fit in? And I can't find an image online but there was a compilation of 40s recordings by Ike Quebec, Illinois Jacquet and Ben Webster (I think) called Angry Young Tenors . That is if I remember the album title correctly.
  5. You all deserve a final comment from me. I told you they were fucked in April. I repeated myself about two weeks ago. I was RIGHT. I've taken a long hard look at things and determined that baseball is not worth the mental or emotional energy I've given it. It is time to take a huge step away from it. There must be better ways to waste my time for the rest of my life and I am going to find them and pursue them. I already have a good idea of alternatives. Reading. Listening to music in the evening. Talking to my wife. Not obsessive worry about unimportant things like what free agent signs with which team or who won or lost. In short, you won't find another post from me on an MLB related thread again.* * With the sole exception of any discussion of Roger Clemens' perjury trial next spring, which I regard as a law and order, right and wrong issue rather than being MLB-related.
  6. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/ The only difference is that Montero is three years younger but then again, Montero hasn't outhit Lavarnway at a younger age, he's put up numbers that aren't quite as good. And fwiw, no one has said Lavarnway won't hack it as a major league catcher the way they've said about Montero (to be fair, the jury is out, while they've delivered their verdict on Montero). A catcher with a power bat is worth more than a DH/1B with the same stats. The latter is much more easily replaced.
  7. Its been a while since I last listened but I recall it as solid. I like Richard Wyands in a supporting role so ...
  8. I enjoyed it but if you have an aversion to Woods your mileage may vary.
  9. It can be a lot better than this, and for the record I won't even be watching.
  10. Drew is retiring, Dice-K won't pitch in 2012. Lackey and Crawford we're stuck with ... at least Crawford should be better, we've seen more than enough of Lackey to know what we'll get: Attitude in gross disproportion to talent.
  11. Knowing your posts so well, I have no doubt you're serious. And the only response I can give is that stupid shit like this is really amusing coming on the heels of the "Hanging Judges" discussion.
  12. Astonishing that Larry posted this over four years ago, and now its clear that the "docking maneuvers" with a publisher were never completed. I'm very excited to know this will finally be available to purchase but how could such an undertaking not find at least a university press to publish it properly? Oh well, the times aren't a changin', they've changed. I'm not getting a Kindle just for this book and have no interest in adapting the technology but I'll be happy to pay for a downloaded PDF. The fact that there is no musical analysis just means more text to enjoy and none to skim over.
  13. I am utterly mystified by this attitude. But then again I am also mystified by populist BS spewed by certain politicians.
  14. It wasn't coincidental that R.E.M.'s commercial rise happened at the same time that I started on my jazz oddysey. They epitomized almost every aspect of pop music of that era that I despised.
  15. Just as long as you don't eat any bad fish right before the gig, right? Glad to hear it - so does this mean you got the engineering gig on the CD or when you say "tracking" are you referring to the recording itself with you handling the keys?
  16. When I lived in CT, that was true - there were a dozen more outside that Blue The Killer Cat was going to sequentially hunt down, toy with, then deposit by the front door. Lather rinse repeat.
  17. So did I. Good luck Kevin. And forget about no-kill and I'd wonder about securing the outside. Obviously the little critters can get in through some small openings but I'd see if you can find where they're getting in and seal it.
  18. What I don't see the point of is locking down a thread because its "run its course". Traditionally, threads end of their own volition or petering out. Being self-indulgent or runnings its course isn't a reason to close a thread, IMHO. Instead, threads should be closed when they devolve into pointless beligerence and verbal abuse. Exhibit 1 through 10 would be the baseball steroid thread, and I should know since I contributed so much pointless beligerence! But seriously, I do think that the main, if not sole reason to actually shut off discussion is when it reaches that point, not just due to some perceived loss of ongoing value. Let it die its natural death.
  19. I was pretty sure that was the case.
  20. No wonder with four tenors listed plus a trumpeter. Who was Blue Grant? A nom de session for Grant Green or was there a jazz musician by that name?
  21. Certainly is true that the Cards had, and maintain, a huge geographical range of fans. When I lived in St. Louis I knew people who grew up quite a distance away and would drive hellacious distances to see the "home town" team. But one thing to point out is that St. Louis is probably the northern-most "southern" town in the country.
  22. My Sox POV is that it is better for the embarrassment to reach its inevitable conclusion. They eminently deserve to reap the embarrassment of so many ill-informed experts calling them a World Series team when they don't even make the playoffs.
  23. For those interested, around the time the CDs were recorded (2009) Brian took the band into Small's. I recently bought the FLAC download for Volumes 1 and 2 direct from Brian's website and I am now streaming/recording the Small's gig as a third and fourth disc of the group. Listen for yourself here.
  24. I better get cracking then. Mine is about 15 years old.
