That's unfortunate news; he made some nice records and was a good composer too. IIRC he wrote all the tunes on the album that featured a frontline of Louis Smith and Ralph Moore. That remains a favorite which I was able to flesh out with unissued tunes a few years ago.

This does not describe me. I hear everything I purchase on CD eventually and D/Ls too. Not that you should change but I have found downloads to be budget savers for reasonable priced access to OOP items from: Black & Blue label; Arbors label; I will still buy a CD thru Amazon Marketplace if reasonably priced/conditioned but often on the aforementioned labels, it's hard to find a reasonably priced CD, or a CD copy at all.

None of these apply. My CD listening time is constrained; I am most likely to hear a new one in the car and then its straight thru but constrained by length of trip; Haven't borrowed a CD from the library in 25 years (maybe more). D/Ls sit on the hard drive and ultimately get extracted to a thumb drive and listened to in the car - usually on longer trips and straight thru; Streaming I do with decent quality youtube and then only stream from one PC to another for recording via Goldwave. At that point it joins with other D/Ls on the thumb that stays mostly in the car.

Not to mention a 13 member Vatican-like committee in which nobody communicates except the "chairman" who is effectively the Pope, making declarations from on high. Fuck them and I wish I could communicate with that particular pope of college football because I'd make his eyes bleed with what I have to say to him.

Sorry Aggie but that just isn't how any honest choice should be made. (And before I get into that let's just point out that the second string QB is not likely to be still held out in 30 days for a semi-final game. They might be "down to their third string QB" but he doesn't have a broken leg. He will play against GA and would have played in the game they should have gotten chosen for. As for the rest - it's just total bullshit. As the AD said: "It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant ... Wins matter. Losses matter. ... Today they changed the way success is assessed in college football, from a tangible metric - winning on the field - to an intangible, subjective one. Evidently predicting the future matters more ... they chose predictive competitiveness over proven performance, subjectivity over fact. They have become a committee of prognosticators. They have abandoned their responsibility by discarding their purpose - to evaluate performance on the field."

BFT 240 AKA 20th Anniversary AKA Everybody contribute a Tune SIGN UP
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
UP for more signups! We are at 18 - target is 20 with I think a max of 24, for at the high end, 12 total tunes for February and for March. -
ESPN has huge contract with SEC. ESPN has rights to all "playoff" games. That committee was going to install a 1-loss SEC team over an undefeated FSU team by hook or by crook and by fuck, they did. The ACC was 6-4 against the SEC. FSU won two games on the road against the SEC. They beat 4 top 25 teams. Their "weak" offense without Jordan Travis had more yards in the ACC championship game than Michigan did in the Big 10 championship. They held a top 20 offense to six points in the ACC championship. Oh, and 3rd in strength of schedule - BETTER THAN ALABALAMA. This is a joke of a travesty of a criminally dishonest corrupt organization. -Embittered, infuriated FSU grad. Someone tell me how I am wrong and this can be defended.

I was thinking 240A and 240B but it could be 239 and 240, I am open. -
BFT 240 AKA 20th Anniversary AKA Everybody contribute a Tune SIGN UP
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
Any further feedback on possible plan to split up signees into two month-long BFTs which has added advantage of covering the currently un-claimed February slot? We are at 18 signups, I was thinking we could keep that open into December and if we finished with 20-22 that would make a good total for two BFTs,, and could accommodate 24. -

My guess, addition by subtraction (Yankees) and disappointment/injury (Mets). -
I am glad Felser's BFTs have such a welcoming audience from certain members but let's face it, that ain't me. OTOH, BFT237 has led me to coin a phrase: Agitation Saxation tm. There's a plethora of sax coming up on my January effort (I was almost concerned about a lack of variation in solo instruments) but the style could not be more different than what we have on most tracks here: Note running. Blappity blap blap SPLAT. No story. Hell no melody I'd want to hear again. I'll stop with the complaining because it's all a matter of taste, and there are plenty here who will love John's tunes. It's just not my cuppa. Track 1: I can't say I hated it but it did wear out its welcome about 45 seconds before this short track ended. More of the saxophone would have helped, and I promise I will never say that again in this post. <green smilie thingie here> Track 2 - 3: Agitation Saxation. Track 4: OK in its moody vibe. Track 5: No thanks. Track 6-8: See Tracks 2-3. Track 9: Thankful for the break from post-Coltrane Saxation but not my thing. Track 11: Sorry those vocals were torturous for me. Track 12: Different than the rest but not sure the point of the extended mellow intro and it didn't do too much for me from there. Too 70s for me. So 1, 4 and 12 were the least objectionable, such as they were. Thanks John!

Yeah and it's all good ... personally I have never thought of a reveal needing to breathe or have its own time in the BFT spotlight. People come to it on their own schedules anyway.

BFT 236 Reveal ("guest commentary" by Dan Morgenstern)
Dan Gould replied to JSngry's topic in Blindfold Test
It never occurred to me to ask but I guess the whole show was these jam sessions? Nobody had individual sets with a working group? I guess a result of less time to program than Newport? -
well you opened it up by posting your reveal. You gonna be offline soon?

BFT 240 AKA 20th Anniversary AKA Everybody contribute a Tune SIGN UP

Well that would be me - not a big deal in terms of ease or effort. Was mostly thinking of how this would cover February and also making for a shorter listening experience. -

They must have gotten good distribution and some sales though as they aren't hard to find if you like the vinyl side. Thanks to Jim for an excellent choice. It must have been excellent for me to have puzzled it out. -

Which one? Two months to comment on a single BFT or two separate ones covering February/March? -
BFT 240 AKA 20th Anniversary AKA Everybody contribute a Tune SIGN UP
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
You're in. And I had a thought that I will put out there: February is also open - what about splitting up participants into two BFTs covering 239 and the big 24-oh? 10 tunes per month would allow no implied limit on length. Or, a single BFT covering two months, no track limit, and lots of time for participation. Just a thought I had as the sign ups continue. -
Glad you posted this GoM as it reminded me to send also.

Cano is 41. Gregorius is only 33. Cano fits better with Sandoval and Bartolo Colon but Gregorius ...? -

Looked like an average Marlins game attendance. And Didi Gregorious is playing? Its not been that long since he was starting for the Yanks has it? -
Soft spot here for "Lucky Old Sun" which I heard on some compilation that I couldn't even find on discogs. I consider that the first "vocal" I heard by Benson because I knew the other hits already mentioned here (and which I also have a soft spot for) before I knew anything about jazz so they are colored by a certain ingrained pop memory.

Yes we did, and DrJ is now added to the list of participants! Wondering what is proper pride of place? First or last? Decisions, decisions.
