I think what Ubu (and myself) are curious about is what specific Mobley record did you come across the other week and realize with slight regret that you had enough?

Another great Johnny Adams performance, I Want To Walk Through This Life With You. Can't find it on Allmusic or Amazon so I suspect this is one of his 45s that hasn't made it to any compilation CD. Truly a shame, as it stands up to any of his greatest early work.

Forced exposure to her hits when I worked at a soft adult-contemporary radio station plus the insidiousness of the lyrical hooks made her music more or less aggravating to me. Even now hearing her name has put "Smooth Operator" on autoplay in my brain, and I have got to get it out of there. YMMV, of course. She's awful purty though. (Your mileage may vary on that but it probably shouldn't.)

Most of y'all think I'm a bad person anyway, so I'll say this publicly: I'm hoping to see Favre stretchered off the field into permanent retirement. Note I did not say "with a life-changing brain injury" or "for a lengthy hospital stay". I'd just like to see his bell rung a la Joe Montana vs the Giants such that he understands, finally and forever, that he isn't the savior and that he can't compete at this level. Plus it would be nice karmic justice for the way he's fed his ego the last several years. Especially nice if a Packers LB does it to him, in fact.

So what? The Athletics signed Grant Green. Maybe he knows what happened to the recording of his Boston TV appearance.

The music is as fine as you would expect. Billy Root didn't recorded much so he is a bonus. For some reason I want to say that one of these volumes has a Hank Mobley tune that he recorded for BN, so hearing it live is another plus. I've never known anyone who thinks this isn't well worth hearing.

How about porn flicks? At least, when they didn't involve any famous jazz musicians (the soundtracks, not the porn).

Gambling: PowerBall Mania
Dan Gould replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Florida allows anonymity too - I didn't know that this wasn't allowed just about everywhere. Part of me thinks I'd go for the big news conference because I'd have no problems telling long-lost relatives and would be money managers to F-Off, until I change our phone numbers. But I really don't understand how this would change my relationship with friends and close family. One of my closest friends from college has made an enormous fortune (well, its at least a very substantial one) and this hasn't changed our relationship. What's the difference if the money comes in one lucky swoop? -

Suffice it to say that I don't prescribe to the "money can't buy you happiness" theory. And I completely fail to understand why Paul views this relationship effect as somehow inevitable. I would be more than happy to find out who my friends are by winning a huge lottery payout. And if family members can't handle it either, than my estate planning just got a lot easier too. There are already lotteries that offer $50,000-$100,000. Florida has a pick-4 that has a prize based on the number of tickets purchased. I can't begin to imagine how someone would think that a $50,000 prize would radically change someone's life. Maybe if you have no dependents and a steady income but haven't been able to save for retirement, that's an amount that would jump-start that process. Or if you have kids, you'd be able to set up their college funds and not worry about that anymore. No doubt an amount like that is a godsend, but radically changing lives? I don't think so. That makes me remember Tug McGraw's comment about winning the lottery (not verbatim, but the gist was something like "I'd spend some of it on women and booze. The rest I'd waste.") -
So if not for a fluke ninth inning rally, the worthless pieces of contemptible shit would have been swept in Texas, with two fucking runs scored per game. 8 1/2 to the Yankees in another two hours. Out of the wild card and as I said, no doubt about it out of contention by September 1. For once will you do something useful and beat the motherfucking Yankees in October? I'm fucking begging you, Al.

My Father had most of the Sinatra LPs - this makes me curious which versions he happened to own. Given the stereo rigs he's had during my lifetime, its unlikely he was big on the newest thing, stereo recordings. The old LPs are boxed up in my old bedroom, maybe I'll remember to look them over at Christmas time.

If I win, I'm taking care of my family, so where's the alienation? If I lose my friends, they weren't friends in the first place. And I'll buy new ones. No doubt the odds are stacked against you, but within reason, what's the harm in taking your chances? What's really unfortunate is that in the current economic climate, lottery sales are way up because of the sheer desperation of people who are out of work or facing foreclosure. -
Not all houses for sale are empty.

Absolutely it is potentially suspicious. Are you not aware that burglars target houses with for sale signs? And what can be seen from a window? Nothing, that's what. Anyone who likes a house from the curb needs to jot down the number and arrange a viewing. Period. You cannot judge the interior by peering into a single window. You're right that there is no crime and no law broken, but I sure as hell would want to have neighbors who call the cops about anyone looking into my windows while I am not home. So absolutely the cops should be called and they should check the guy out. Dylan understood their reasons for their actions, why can't you?
-
That's not wandering around the neighborhood looking at houses, that's trespassing. You want people peering through windows of houses whose owner isn't there? This isn't something for the police to investigate?

Sorry I'm late, Mike. Hope it was a good one.

By Stereojack's recollection the show would have been to promote Grant's appearance at a Boston club, so it seems like its a long shot - very long shot. But it would be great if they told you what did survive from both shows (doesn't sound like it would be a very long list), especially since the Jazz Icons folk say that they are beginning to work with WGBH. What would they be working on? That's the remaining question. Or did WGBH have a different show in the 70s or 80s that the might be trying to license? What truly survived, Tanner's faulty memory notwithstanding, is what we need.

Can Jazz Be Saved?
Dan Gould replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well that's me in a nutshell - even though I am not totally stuck in the Blue Note era - and so, yes, jazz is dead to me. I can't imagine any future development that might have any appeal, and I don't mind admitting that I am not in any way actively searching out new artists. The new artists I do discover are themselves stuck somewhere in the Blue Note era. What can I say? I know what I like, and I like what I like. -

I'll go you one better (actually, several): "She loves the free, fine, wild knocked out koo-koo groovy wind in her hair" - The Lady is a Tramp, The Main Event From later in the CD, does this count? "Now, the Woody Herman band is gonna wail at you here. Light 'em up, light 'em up!" - I've Got You Under My Skin -
The toy makes a six year old girl into a lactating woman. I don't think that's quite normal, but then again I did say that at least she only straps on pretend nipples, not giant pretend breasts. But let me ask you, Mark: What if the toy did come with a device that a six year old puts on so that she now has huge lactating breasts to hold her doll up against? Would that be OK to you? Seems to me that the company probably started out with that option and then decided its better to just strap on pretend nipples, don't push the transformative aspect of the doll too far.
