  1. I've considered Whittaker cuts for prior BFTs. A strong Blakey influence.
  2. Yes and the link in the first post opens to a headshot that definitely stirs up memories of his contributions here. Thanks to Bresna for letting us know and condolences to his family and friends and all here who interacted with him.
  3. I will gladly take credit for that, not something I quite anticipated ...
  4. I haven't gone looking for verification but didn't Stan Levey also live in NYC? The whole "white musicians skedaddled" out of town is just hopeless wokery run amok. It should also be noted that this writer is just a couple of years out of Yale and with a degree in Applied Mathematics. And this being run in the Real Estate section made it even less likely any editor would have a clue about the problems with it.
  5. I figured it did but I had to joke about my extensive Percy Faith collection.
  6. Thanks for posting this Brad, I also saw Allen comment on it on his FB feed which warned me of such gems as Gillespie, together with Charlie Parker, is largely considered a pioneer of the rebellious jazz style that diverged from mainstream swing jazz’s emphasis on orchestrated productions and collective harmony. Instead, it ushered in an era of artistic experimentation that better reflected the realities of Black urban life and the talents of Black musicians. This piece continues the tradition of the NYT proving it knows nothing, institutionally, about jazz anymore.
  7. Thanks to mjazzg who successfully decoded my instructional update in the opening post and has successfully sent his track for February. And even though he said, in not so many words, that it's a Felser, I didn't hate it! <green smilie thing here>
  8. Please see opening post which is now edited for my division of participants into February and March groups.
  9. This was posted in the Rare Jazz Photos group on FB and I thought folks here would enjoy.
  10. Negative.
  11. If you'd waited I'd have just sent you mine at the end of the month. I am sure you'll enjoy - there were at least two other Felser tracks I considered before settling on the Tina Brooks cover.
  12. I knew Bill would plow thru the song IDs - although there are definitely two others that should be ID'd and a third that I think someone will get.
  13. Thank for posting this!
  14. Happy New Year to all and thanks to Thom, my newest effort is now released: https://thomkeith.net/index.php/blindfold-tests/ I am particularly pleased with this one which means I will probably get many opposite reactions but I do believe we have: Listenability and superior tracking (and under 80 minutes too!) Quite a number of familiar tunes so there is that element of the blindfold test for people to excel at; The unavoidable tough ones plus a surprise or two balanced by several I think are "gimmes" as to at least an artist or two on the track; and most importantly, we got Felsers. I emptied my Felser list in fact. (Well, Felsers I can listen to at least. I only hope I earn enough points to get the coveted Liked it More Than Hated It rating. <late lamented green emoji here> ) These are all, save one, tunes I discovered this year. There is no Gene Harris. One soloist is heard from twice. More and better hints to come later on. Have at it ...
  15. So he gave great head but compared to what? In addition to No Dull Moment on my listening pile I have a Pacific Jazz LP en route from a discogs seller so I will be listening a good deal soon. RIP.
  16. Jesus Christ the questionable moves keep coming. Sale and cash for someone who can best be described as "promising young player" - some middle infielder. Maybe he can take over SS when Story goes down again. No question Sale has been a huge disappointment thru the contract extension they signed him too and who knows if he manages to be healthy but he was your number 1 starter, for good or ill, going into 2024. And he actually pitched pretty decently early in 2023 before his "stress reaction" in his shoulder blade. If he pitched well or just decently, he could certainly be shipped at the trade deadline for a lot more than a single middle infielder who may or may not cut it in the majors. Plus cash. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/braves-red-sox-trade-chris-sale-for-vaughn-grissom.html Color me completely unimpressed with Craig Breslow to date. He better sign the other Japanese pitcher on the market or swing a much more useful deal soon or its last place again in 2024.
  17. Love the Epic recordings as a leader (and also Reaching Out that got turned into a Grant Green leader date). Grateful he hired Frank Haynes on some of those records, too ...
  18. When mediocrities want to "re-establish their value" the going rate if you're a pitcher is over 19 mil a season. https://www.mlb.com/news/lucas-giolito-red-sox-free-agent-deal Ugh.
