Record grading on eBay [do you trust the no-play grading sellers?]
Dan Gould replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Thanks for the Goldmine standards. Since I am not in the market for expensive used records, I have no problem with dealers who don't play-grade. In fact, I very rarely notice dealers who state that a record is play-graded. Most will say that they sell so much they can't, or at best, will say that records are "spot" play-graded. But the fact is we all know that there can be nasty sounding noises on records that look perfect. -
The fact of the matter is that Caiman sends you a link to your order status as soon as they receive it from Amazon. That link shows you the status of what you've ordered -whether it has shipped or is "in transit" which means its on its way to them so you can breathe easy, and the other category which I do not recall, but it means its on order. So once you've placed an order, no one can claim they don't know what is going on.

These issues have come up before. Its clear, at least to me, that if Caiman lists a disc that you know has been out of print for years, there's little reason to order from them. But for good discounts on individual CDs, they are an excellent source, and my experience has been entirely positive with them. Well, maybe not 100% - there is a CD out there that shipped Oct. 23rd and I still haven't seen it. Three others that shipped at the same time have arrived. If it doesn't show soon then I may have to deal with their customer service soon, and we'll find out how that goes. One other thing: when it comes to fill rate and prices, Caiman seems to be about 100% better than at least 80% of the sellers on GEMM.

Your most common source for music purchases?
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There are two Borders near me. And the price and selection keep you coming back? I figured there was no way any of the B&M people would have identified Borders as the place, given the way they've squeezed inventory while reducing the value of coupons. Then again, I decided to take a drive to the Borders I used to live near (now about 45 minutes away) and was pleasantly surprised at what was in stock. The jazz section is at best 1/2 what it was, but at least they had all of the recent batches of RVGs available. -

I'm curious about the ten people who still say that B&M stores get most of their money. Where do you guys live? -

Your most common source for music purchases?

Well shoot me but I was trying to distinguish between the mighty Amazon 800 lb gorilla and the small to mid-size businesses that use their service to sell to consumers. -
I've been satisfying a major blues jones lately, but I've been doing it almost exclusively through Amazon Marketplace, which gets me to wondering just how we spend the majority of our music dollar.

jazzmatazz
Dan Gould replied to danasgoodstuff's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
First of all, Alan hardly limited his list to reissues. ALL jazz releases seemed to make it onto his list, in a far more comprehensive manner than AAJ. Secondly, Alan hardly stopped updating because "the cream is out there" - he had personal matters that have kept him from keeping his site up to date. That's a terrible loss, not least because you aren't likely to discover these releases at your local Borders by happenstance. -
Another Friggin' Web Scam
Dan Gould replied to John Tapscott's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The risks of opening pdf files are certainly much less than self-extracting exe files, but... being infected by a pdf is possible. I'm sorry but since I don't know where that link goes to, I am not going to click on it. -
Another Friggin' Web Scam
Dan Gould replied to John Tapscott's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
NO! Even if you KNOW the sender, do not open ANY .exe attachments unless you speak with the person over the phone to find out what they sent. Many viruses send themselves out via E-mails to everyone on the infected person's address book. The E-mail from a "friend" may be from the virus. Later, Kevin A very good point, Kevin. The idea that keyloggers are becoming common is especially scary to me as I have only a few passwords I use and have not gotten into the habit of changing them. -

Have you ever purchased from their website? If you have, I wouldn't write this off as another attempt to launch some sort of virus on your PC. In a related, general queery, I know you can mask the URL of a link, but is it possible to mask the file type of an attachment? If it was a PDF file - is that a typical way of delivering a virus or a worm? -
Unfortunately the Globe only reported the Red Sox being number one, and Baseball America's website requires a $62 a year fee to access. Maybe someone has a membership and can share the rest, or a more detailed report will appear elsewhere.

Won't make an impact on this year's off-season or next year's roster, but here's some potentially good news: Baseball America ranks 2006 Red Sox Draft Number One in Baseball. I think that Daniel Bard kid is going to be something special.

Lou D: Possum Head (argo) + Soph. Lady (BN)
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Recommendations
I have no idea if Possum Head is worth $18 but I was never disappointed by any of LDs Argo/Cadet recordings, and I have them all. I've hever heard Soph. Lady but in my book, any vinyl copy of a BN title I was interested in priced under $10 and in acceptable condition is a no-brainer. -
Speaking of spoof phishing emails, I got one from "Paypal" in which the URL of the "sign-in" page was at a URL paypal-2.com. Anyone who falls for that deserves what they get.

she's got a frightfully high opinion of herself "I've done a lot of great work in the jazz genre" but this line really cracked me up: I seriously doubt that in today's market it took any arm twisting to get Verve to do this album. In fact its more likely that they came to her with the idea, and she just doesn't want to say that publicly.

"Cover Tunes" from Youtube - the good, the bad, the ugly...
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Almost as bad as Celine Dion - You Shook Me All Night Long And I just had to go and click on that link. When will I ever learn? -
How can someone who get's hold of the Ebay login data access the Paypal login data or use the Paypal account? Aren't these seperate? They're nominally separate but if someone uses the same password for paypal as ebay, and a person has already hacked the ebay account, there's nothing stopping them from accessing the paypal account. Everyone knows they're supposed to have different passwords and change them regularly, but I doubt that too many people follow that advice. Most have a handful of passwords they use, and if one doesn't work they try the other til they get in.

What Hans said!!! I hope you don't have a paypal account associated with the ebay account.
