Welcome to the shit-world of boxing. That's one reason why I can't stand watching it. The other reason I avoid it, is due to the brutality. ← Learning your trade on the streets just doesn't cut it in the long run. ← What a TOTAL crock of shit this is. Mike Tyson became a champion because of CUS D'MATO, not "learning his trade on the streets". And D'MATO taught Tyson well, including excellent defensive skills with steady, effective head movement. It was Tyson who lost these skills, initially because they no longer seemed necessary when opponents were in fact psyched out before the bell rang, and then time and age took care of the rest of his skills.

OK. Tyson is not a simpleton, he's just not well-educated in a formal sense or especially well-spoken. But he's not stupid and he's not uninformed.

This thread gives me a reason to mention that I finally got a chance to listen to his newest CD: http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dr...g38226d6i1l.jpg And its a doozy, as was discussed here when it first came out (For shame, I've had this since Christmas and only gave it a listen in the last month or so).

I cannot possibly imagine that they will sleep on this, unless Uptown has no budget whatsoever for reviewer copies.

Well, the revolution was in full swing - I don't think they had any hope of fully appreciating the moment as we do, with 60 years of hindsight. The other thing I notice is how much of the negativity goes to the organization/execution of the concert, the problem of no-shows, not so much as a musical failure. But they could have taken closer note of what Diz-Bird and co. were laying down.

OK, I've just given a listen, and I have to quote from Jim's original post: Even without the historical significance of the recording, this is an amazing record and hands down the most important "new" issue in many, many a moon.

Glad to hear that the Groove is going to stock these - I think I will signup for email notification - maybe if they get enough emails they'll be sure to order plenty. I'd hate if this comes in one at a time and I never manage to snag it.

For that matter, with Catesta's impending nomadic existence, is he going to be ready for an August BFT?
-
Got mine today, hope to listen tomorrow. Thanks Chuck.

Clearly, Chris, the government is aware of your political views and they've got their collective eye on you.

still does that from where I am sitting ← Yes, but there are no links to the albums ... or at least the links don't work for me.
-
As far as sideman appearances go, in the discography page, there is a "credits" tab that gives that info. I did do the free signup, maybe that's why I get that link? My one major gripe is the fact that searching for "Song" doesn't give you any useful info. It used to be that you'd get a list of albums that a particular song appears on, and you could click on whatever album you were looking for. Now, it doesn't give you that option, so I don't know what the point of searching by "Song" would be. I'm not quite as negative on the revamp as most people, maybe I've just gotten used to it now, but it doesn't seem particularly slow anymore, and otherwise, you can still find your bios and album reviews. I've never trusted their discographical stuff, so who cares if its their or not, correct or not? Its just as likely to be incorrect, so I ignore whatever it says.

Clearly there's some sort of glitch in how Marty's accessing the site or how it displays to him. I have no problem seeing JPEGs of album covers either. Maybe AMG likes Delray Beach but Boynton Beach ... not so much.

How's Carmell Jones on this? I do dig him and he didn't record all that often ...

Why Does Mosaic Make "Limited Edition" Sets
Dan Gould replied to Guy Berger's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This answers half of my question. (Though I assume this goes only for the sets licensed from Sony, Verve or Warner -- wouldn't EMI/BN let them do infinite reprints?) ← What part of do you not understand? Its all very straightforward, and your questions are not even interesting from an egghead perspective. Reread BFrank's post as well as the number of posters who point out that Mosaic is not in the business of gouging prices for the greatest possible profit. And this doesn't even make a whit of sense: None of the money that goes to speculators would be effected in the least. The money that goes to speculators is due to the limiting factor of the lease arrangements. Once a set goes out of print, the money going to speculators is a function of demand for a scarce product. That demand, and the resultant price, has no theoretical, practical or remotely plausible relationship to what the price was when it was in print and readily available. (edit): Furthermore, the number of people who buy the set from Mosaic is the same, regardless of the price that Mosaic charges. Therefore, the price (demand) for the now OOP box, and the amount of money "speculators" receive is entirely dependent on the number of people interested in the set in excess of the number that Mosaic sold, and what they are willing to pay to secure it. Hasn't a thing to do with the price Mosaic charges while the set is available. -
Yeah, but Cashman is in the last year of his deal, and its been no secret that he is highly unlikely to stay. as for RJ, I saw a surprising statistic today that last year, through 12 starts, the D-Backs had a better record than the Yanks do in RJ's 12 starts for them. Very strange when you consider how little run support he got last year. But then again, the Yanks are 0-22 in games they score three or fewer runs, and that puts them in a category with the Royals and Rockies (horrible) and the Marlins (great pitching but very inconsistent).

Amazing how a new manager can change things around, at least for a time ... which leaves me wondering, is it actually possible that Joe Torre is at risk of getting canned? Will the real Yankees please stand up, so we know if its the team that went 16-2 or the team that was 11-19 and is now under .500 at the latest point in the season for any season in the Torre era?

I felt so bad for receiving but never commenting on the last couple of BFTs (sorry, Cary, et. al.!) that I decided to pop this one in as soon as I opened the envelope. Man, there's an hour I wish I had back. Sorry, John, but that's how it went. The ugly details: #1 - If this is the state of big bands nowadays, well ... let's just say its not Basie. #2 - Much better. Dug the trumpeter a lot, I'm very curious who it is. #3 - Uh, no thanks. Hated the guy's tone. The tune sounded like a practice exercise. He should keep practicing. I'd rather hear the entire CD by the avante big band than this. NEXT. #4 - Just don't care for the instrumentation. #5 - Nothing that appeals here, least of all the drum solo. #6 - Is this a Bollywood singer with a non-Bollywood backing? #7 - Could not make it through this one. #8 - Not unlistenable but nothing compelling either. Again, part of it is the instrumentation. #9 - I should like this more than I do, especially given what's come before but it got a wee bit too raucous for me. #10 - Clearly not 'vintage' - the sound is too good and there are interludes in the arrangement that are out of place - but I liked this. #11 - Uh, no thanks. Sorry John, but those are the ugly facts from where I'm sitting. #2 gets the biggest with #10 behind it, and the rest ...

I can't imagine anyone not liking Smokey Robinson, but the real question is, are you spamming the board or are you a jazz fan who just decided to make his first post about Smokey?

I think the schedule should be exactly as you delineate it: Signup starts on or around the first of the previous month. Shipping on or around the 15th of the previous month. Discussion on or around the first of the scheduled month. Answers on or around the third week of the scheduled month, depending on the extent of the discussion. If some people are going to do these things on their own schedule, regardless, maybe it would help to add these target dates to the "Master List" as a subtle reminder of what compilers are expected to do?

I think you're thinking of "My Main Man" on Cadet

Check out the new homepage!!!
Dan Gould replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Looks great, but still dorky! -
Its not a bad idea, though it won't necessarily speed things up, because I think at one point we were doing a bit better than one per month. But it may very well be worth it because, as noted above, future compiler can know exactly when they need to be ready. One question I would have is, what precisely gets started on the first of the month? The BFT discussion? Or the shipping of the new BFT? If we're talking about a month for discussion/answers, then we're also basically saying that the signup should start on the first of the prior month, with shipping around the 15th of the prior month.
