The Game Is Virtual. The Profit Is Real.

Did you ever go back?

As Mike Fitzgerald pointed out, Ron had mistaken Percy Heath's sole album as a leader for Hank Jones.

Oh, and at this point, I'd say its safe to say the Sox are glad they missed out on Pavano and "settled" for Clement. Clement: 6-0, ERA 3.07 Pavano: 4-3, ERA over 4 now. And did anyone catch that stat of Pavano's home/away split? He's Ed Whitson all over again, he stinks up the Stadium, wins on the road.

Well, both good things and bad things always come to an end, and fortunately today they ended simultaneously, as the Yanks home winning streak and generally decent pitching went down the crapper as the Sox slumbering bats awoke with a vengeance, finishing the day just one hit shy of tying the record for most hits allowed by a Yankee team in a nine inning game (and considering how many shots Olerud hit through the box that got deflected for outs, that record should have been eclipsed for sure). Now I know that tomorrow night we'll probably be wishing we had a few of those runs that scored today, but I'll start feeling much better about the defending champions so long as this marks the day when Renteria and Manny start doing what they're capable of. And I think Olerud is going to prove to be an excellent pickup. Wouldn't bother me in the least if Millar ends up riding the pine and Olerud gets most of the starts. He's still got the sweet swing and he certainly is still a smooth defender. Now its up to Wells to start earning his salary/bonuses.

Now, I have no intention or interest in seeing the remake but reading reviews in the NYT (very negative) and ESPN's Sports Guy (Ballistic because they've desecrated a "classic") I'm curious how everyone here views the original film (and since Eddie Albert just died, it seems a propos to consider a film in which he was cast very much against "type"). Personally, I always enjoyed the film, particularly Albert's performance, the fact that Burt, as an FSU alum and former tailback actually looks the part, and I also like the humorous scenes with the ragtag group of cons (particularly the guy who went on to play "Jaws" in the Bond films opposite Moore). Only drawbacks, to me, are the over-use of that seventies staple, the split/triple/quadruple screen. A little of that goes a long way and its used way too much during the final reel. So, what do you think of the original? what do you think of a remake being made, and with Adam Sandler? Any interest in seeing it?

And after a bad start or two, Vasquez has been lights out for the D-Backs.

Hey, only stirring the pot. All that matters is how well a baseball player performs. But Dan, players don't turn down the opportunity to go to the Yanks because they can't keep their facial hair. If the money is right and Damon, for some reason, wants to come to New York, he'll shave and cut his hair just like so many others, e.g., Giambi, have done. More importantly, speaking about actual baseball, are the Red Sox going to hold a base running clinic before tomorrow's game? I had a lot of fun watching that 6th inning display tonight. Here I am down by one more run at the time and I'm laughing my ass off. Considering what the Yanks did in the bottom half of that inning, those back to back throw 'em outs at the plate kind of ignited them, don't you think? ← Actually Damon has said specifically that he will not join the Yankees if the Red Sox do not re-sign him. As for how they ran the bases, we need a clinic for our third base coach who has a history of sacrificing runners at home. There was no reason whatsoever to send Bellhorn; I didn't see if Damon went on his own or not. But the third base coach is a moron and has been that way since he took over from "Send 'Em In" Kim. In fact, you might recall a game last October, Marty. Damon at second, single to left, thrown out at the plate. In the end though it didn't matter at all, just as last night's stupidities won't matter either.

Or, you may consider signing the guest book and then carefully palming the card off of any of the gifts on the gift table. They'll simply assume that the gift with no card was from you. ** Full disclosure: I stole this idea from the TV series Wings.**

Indeed. The no facial hair other than mustaches, the short hair, the numbers only on the jersey ... faceless, nameless ... lame. And if those silly rules keep Damon out of New York after this year, hallelujah.

Eddie Albert, star of 'Green Acres,' dead at 99

Guess he couldn't deal with the opening of a remake of The Longest Yard. (Definitely one of his best roles). -
Or it might simply be that Carrie is straight out of Central Casting for American Idol. She's EXACTLY who the competition is designed to discover: young, attractive, talented but with virtually no performance experience, tiny home town: she was a lock from the very start. And it has nothing to do with Red vs Blue states.

Thanks for the restaurant tip, but we're only there two nights and both games are 7:05 starts, so either its Fenway Franks - or whatever new menu items they have nowadays, or else eating somewhere near the park. I would like to get there in time for batting practice. With seats on the Monster, I figure we should get a ball or two as a souvenir.

Unfucking believable. Seven losses in ten games and now we're looking up at the Jays, Yanks and Orioles, and the latest report is that Schilling won't be back til the All Star break.

While I agree that the Peter Cetera years were truly inducing, count me as a fan of the 70s hits. Chicago's Greatest Hits was the second album I ever owned (Endless Summer was the first) and I have always suspected that my affinity for the horn-driven music foreshadowed my turn to jazz 18 years later.

Thanks everyone for the advice, and Chris, we will surely genuflect there. We might even eat a pizza.

I disagree. First of all, just because a person is too young to vote doesn't make him or her too young to have an uninformed opinion. I've met plenty of 11 to 17-year-olds who thought they understood politics enough to support the president, for example, in the 2004 election. Similarly, just because a person is old enough to vote but normally doesn't do so is not an indication that one is apolitical. Supposedly the so-called "values-voters" were the deciding factor in the last election, and these are people who normally *don't* go to the polls because they believe the politics is too corrupt for them to bother. These people are Carrie's audience. They live in the South, believe in God, support the troops, and love contemporary country radio. Carrie is their ideal daughter. If she started dressing like Christina/Brittany or admitted to liking the Dixie Chicks, they'd drop her in a cold minute. ← So what you are in fact saying is that Bush really did win reelection, just as Carrie, his surrogate, won this contest. Oh and by the way, one can have exceptionally well informed opinion and support the President, whether you're 11-17 or a bit older.

Probably cuz we know nothing about the area and want to stay close by. I think my father told me that the MFA is a particularly good one. If that's close by, that may be what we do with ourselves before Wednesday's game.

My wife and I are going to do a quick hit and run to Boston in June. We've got tickets to two games against the Reds and in order to save money, we're just flying on Tuesday and out on Wednesday, and to avoid a rental car, we got a room at the Buckminster, which I understand is in Kenmore Square and just on the other side of the Mass Pike from Fenway. So, Tuesday afternoon and until game time Wednesday night, we'll be limited to walking distance from the Buckminster/Kenmore Square, and the question is: #1 (for my wife): What kind of area is it and are there any particular places we should check out (stores, museums, art galleries)? #2 (for me): are there any decent record stores in the area, particularly vinyl? I remember driving past a Tower Records on my way to the Mass Pike to get out of town after a game, is it still open? Thanks!

Give it a rest, Alex. The fact is that the vast majority of people voting for both Bo and Carrie are too young to vote in a real election or don't bother to anyway. Next you're going to tell us that Diebold ran the vote counting apparatus for Fox, too.

That was not a problem when I saw the film. The moment the movie began, it became the most eerily quiet theater I've ever been in. Not a popcorn movie - and no one was eating anything, let alone laughing.

Let's see: Schilling on the shelf and Wells either injured or ineffective when he pitches. Ramirez, Bellhorn, Millar and Renteria not hitting like they're supposed to (and until very recently, neither was Mueller). Foulke having a surpringly un-Foulke like year. Yes, we have to kick it up a couple of notches - even Damon has said tonite's game against the Blue Jays is a "must win". But the fact remains that overall, the pitching has held up remarkably well without the #1 and #2 starter (and Wade Miller is already showing that he may be the most important "acquisition" of all), and despite the hitting woes of a significant portion of the lineup, the team is very close to the top in runs scored again and is in fact ahead of the pace set by last year's record setting offense. With 2/3 of the season to go, I have to believe that Manny, Millar, Renteria will hit as they always have, Schilling will be back soon enough, and if Wells doesn't get his act together, we'll still have a superb staff of Schilling, Miller, Arroyo, Clement and Wakefield. And Foulke has been one of the most consistent relievers for a long time, so he's going to perform up to standards eventually.

Man! You have a sense of humor, how can that be??? with great lines such as.... Dracula: I'm going out for a bite to drink. Dracula: Children of the night, shut up! Ok, a flawed film for sure, but very 70's and Richard Benjamin's best role. I mean Come on, flashing Dracula his Jewish star, trying to kill him with a silver bullet in the heart , an Oscar worthy performance for sure! ← I completely agree with Berigan, and not just because I always quote that film whenever the subject of a quickie comes up with my wife: "With you, never a quickie. Always a longie."

I think its a no-brainer that what Mike says is true. "Out" people have gone beyond the tradition but haven't necessarily lost their appreciation for it. "In" people -and I'm one of the most "in" people this side of Hardbop Heaney - just can't find anything in the "out" cats to appreciate.
