I went to a used record store today and saw something by the Dirty Blues Band, on Bluesway, Stone Dirt. Jimmy Forrest and Freddie Hill are listed in the band, and I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure whether its the same Jimmy Forrest or not. AMG was no help, and the online Forrest discographies didn't help either. Can anyone confirm, and should I have snagged this album? Thanks.

I was going to make this a poll but I knew I'd forget or be unaware of deserving nominees. But when the topic came to mind, I thought of these three: Dexter Gordon That voice, so smooth and deep and resonant, reciting the lyrics to What's New or whatever great tune he was about to play. Way cool; how I wish I'd been around to see him. Art Blakey For the jocularity, the "On this tune we're going to feature .... no one in particular" and the band introductions with the recitation of honors, "winner of the Downbeat award, the Ladies Home Journal award ..." Lou Donaldson "Not recommended for fusion or con-fusion musicians" Miles Davis If silence is golden, then Miles was the ultimate in cool stage announcements. Who's your pick?

Do You Lend Out Your Mosaic Sets?
Dan Gould replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This presumes that I know someone who might even know what a mosaic set is or would even care. That is sadly not the case. The only people who would ask for a Mosaic set from me would be people right here. And the answer always is, NO WAY! -
When do you have too many records(CD's)
Dan Gould replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I haven't bought a second time, at least not without prior knowledge (you know, buying something and getting rid of it prematurely and buying it again later on). But I've traded for the same item on more than one occasion. -
Congratulations, Paul, I know you were worried about your job situation, glad its looking up and will ultimately bring in more to boot. Good luck and stop in as often as you can.

When we're not here, what do we do for a living?

.J. Jackson, One Of MTV's First VJs Dies At Age 62
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Didn't he look about 40? And I don't know if you all knew, but the other girl, Nina Blackwell, did some "adult" modeling. I agree with Big Al, he was the best of the "ground-breaking" crop of VJs. -
Very sad to hear this. His King LPs with Rusty Bryant are excellent and as Aric mentions, his Doubletime releases are great too. RIP

I've never had a least favorite Mosaic until the past Christmas, the Gerald Wilson set. I dig a great deal of it, but the sets with the pop tune covers I could not stand. Those types of tunes never work with big band arrangements, IMO. So, when I break this one out again I will definitely be skipping a couple of discs.

Now that it's officially here, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TOM!

Byrd with Art Farmer: And speaking of Hubbard, this is a pretty good BN release:

Only shared on three of our aircraft-but those models are 90% of our jet service! And I wonder whether its "by the book" to self-identify as having similar tastes, so you think better of the representative and therefore better of the company. You know, "I'm sorry you did not receive your kosher meal. I too enjoy a bagel with a shmear every once in a while."

That does suck. But I assume that putting quotes around words will still work ... I wonder if sales are down, so they want people to end up stumbling across things they wouldn't othrwise find and start bidding ...

Up again for Chuck!

When I was in junior high to high school Seger was my favorite rock act, and I remain a fan, from Live Bullet to Night Moves to Stranger in Town, Against the Wind, and the one that came after, with the tune about Makin' Thunderbirds. Hope this doesn't make you think even less of me. And a serious question: If Bob Seger is the poor man's Springsteen, what is John (Cougar) Mellencamp??
-
Up for Chuck! Enquiring minds want to know: Tell us what you did! Where you went! What you liked! Did you get a speeding ticket?

There goes the season .... Meanwhile, today's the big moving day, and originally, we intended to spend tomorrow afternoon in the very nice cozy Baltimore Oriole stadium and catch the Sox for a few bucks. With everything we have to do though, I decided against getting tickets, and now I find out who's making the bus trip all the way to Fort Lauderdale. Pedro.

So can I get that Pick a Number From One To Ten cover now? Seriously, nice work, John!

Alexander! You're alive! And you came to Florida and didn't give me a buzz ... for shame. I'm in!

The same applies to the album of the week. Yes, but I would venture a guess that familiarity with artists is generally far greater than familiarity with specific recordings. So, starting a Gene Harris thread might get more responses than starting a Gene Harris, Nature's Way thread. So, for a decent level of participation, Albums of the Week have to be at least somewhat well known, while most people have at least heard names.
-
I don't know if an Artist of the Week is necessary. Frankly, I think that people should just start threads about artists they like/underappreciated artists whenever the mood strikes. If I want to start a discussion of Gene Harris, I have to wait til its my turn? That's kind of silly. I think the purpose of the Artists forum is just this sort of discussion which ought to be free-wheeling and totally ad hoc. In my opinion, of course.

The Man taking all my money...
Dan Gould replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sorry to hear about this, Jim. Since the IRS backed off after something of a public outcry and a Congressional pummelling or two, it looks to me like this is the sort of thing that ought to get publicized and reduced by the state legislature. I would definitely get in touch with my state representatives and raise a stink, maybe something can be done so that they aren't such a-holes in the future. -
I totally agree, Marcus. I saw this band at the Blue Note, on a Monday night one-off, only Grenadier wasn't on the gig, it was the bassist that I think Tony Williams used toward the end, with Mulgrew Miller. Anyway, a very nice set, I particularly enjoy the covers of the Rouse and Jordan tunes, "Pumpkin" and "Highest Mountain," respectively, I even didn't mind the fact that Moore plays a bit of soprano, if I recall correctly. Definitely OOP, though I think I saw it at that Barnes and Noble Concord sale last time. Worth a search.

That's the way its been done in the past, though I think some of the newer members are confused by the different method used for the blindfold test.
