From a spouse of a sports fanatic (NCAA B-Ball)...
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Did you tell her about the idea of adopting a Total Media Blackout? I tell you, it does wonders to lift the spirits. Seriously, some people do get their identities wrapped up in such superficial allegiances. Just as some people refer to their preferred team as "we". "We won last night." "We won the National Championship". Maybe we need Dr. Achtung or Rob to tell us about the psychological underpinnings of these attitudes. -
"American Pie" on FX Last Night
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
True, but the meaning of "pussy" can hardly be mistaken from the sentence "stuck a flute up my pussy". They also didn't do anything to her subsequent line about "wear both of these condoms-I don't want you to cum too fast". -
I happened upon the FX channel's rebroadcast of "American Pie" last night and I was absolutely stunned at what I saw and heard. First came a scene where one girl said to the other "yup, he's got a dick-he's a guy" and I'm thinking, did I really just hear that? So I kept watching, including the bathroom experience of the dork character who doesn't like public bathrooms, right up to the unforgettable scene when Allison Harrigan says, "One time, at band camp, I stuck a flute up my pussy!". And that's exactly what she said. What the hell happened to Standards and Practices? FX may be cable, but its not a premium channel. Its not HBO or Cinemax. Its part of many basic or "basic +" cable packages. Now, I of course realize that Standards and Practices on Network television has evolved (or should we say devolved?) over the last ten years or so. There are things that are said and shown that would never have been seen or shown in the past. But what the fuck? Nice to know there are still some limits, though. I called a friend of mine and he stayed up for the 11 pm rebroadcast and tells me that Shannon Elizabeth didn't get naked in the earlier scene with the guy who molests the apple pie later on. Did anyone else see this new low in broadcasting? What do you think?

Since I skipped so many important dates, like the Grant Green/Sonny Clark or the dates that came out in the Lost Sessions batch, maybe the next step is a second or third poll followed by a play-off? I have a feeling that Procrastinator will win regardless. -

Tom, I AM that spouse! While I couldn't care less about certain sports-basketball and hockey being foremost on the list-I am deeply committed to Red Sox baseball and Florida State Seminole Football. In fact, I hate to admit it, but at one point before our wedding, I reacted to a particularly disheartening result-don't remember which but I think it was baseball-by grabbing a baseball-shaped beanbag and getting some frustration out by heaving it at the wall. I didn't do any damage, that was the whole point of the projectile I chose. But I did make the dog jump off the couch and run into the bedroom cowering in fear that she had done something wrong. Later on that night my wife made it clear that she couldn't handle these outbursts and I promised not to do it again. That turned out to be a simple matter of keeping the throw-ables out of reach. I do have a good suggestion for your wife though. When any of the following happens: Florida State loses to Miami, the Florida Gators or the National Championship game; The Yankees win the World Series or the Red Sox are eliminated I declare a Total Media Blackout. No TV, radio, Internet, etc. No highlights, no analysis, no discussion. Total Media Blackout. Then, if someone says anything about the Miami game, I say with a straight face, "Miami? What Miami game?" (On the other hand, when the sports Gods smile and the result is favorable, then we go into Total Media Saturation, or the attempt to see as many replays and reports as possible, for at least the next 36 hours.) -

smoking or non-smoking?
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yikes! That's really painful, isn't it? Not nearly as painful as you might suspect. I got spinal anasthesia, about midway up the back, and they use a fairly large gauge needle, jabbing it into my butt about a dozen times or so in three different locations. It took much longer to recover from the anasthesia than they expected but I still left the hospital that day. (The last thing you have to do is to demonstrate the ability to urinate. This was difficult to do considering that while I still had no feeling, they decided to catheterize me. You might think THAT is painful but it actually wasn't at all. Very discomforting to watch, not discomforting to feel, provided you have no feeling down there anyway! (I realize the foregoing was totally unnecessary, but when asked about bone marrow donation, I always give the unvarnished truth ) As for pain afterwards, it basically feels as though you slipped on some ice and fell on your butt. It happened just about seven years ago exactly, and the day after the procedure, I actually felt well enough to head to Camden Yards for the Orioles game with my other brother. -
Having just finished listening to it, I am leaning toward Clubhouse. Can't for the life of me figure out why Alfred and Frank decided not to put it out.

smoking or non-smoking?
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I smoked even less-all told, I smoked for approximately 30 minutes in High School. Had to experiment of course but fortunately never got the hang of it, let alone addicted. I do have strong memories of the first pack my friend and I procured. This was in the early 80s, long enough before the full-frontal assault on smoking, so that in the upscale tennis club our families had joined, there actually was a cigarette machine next to the other vending machines in the club's pantry . We carefully scoped out the situation and split the process between us: One put the change in the machine and pulled the knob, immediately exiting through the rear, rarely used entrance to the pantry. The other followed immediately behind, snagging the cigarettes and exiting the other way. We then met up at the far end of the building where we knew there was very little foot traffic, and carefully hid the pack in one of our equipment bags and waited for our parents to pick us up (we were careful to choose a Friday night when few courts are in use and fewer people hanging around). Later that weekend we hooked up to give 'em a try. I guess I was lucky-I gave up pretty quick, my friend is still a smoker to this day. As to siblings, I'm the only one who didn't end up smoking. My older brother quit a few years ago (says he still misses it when he drinks and after meals). But the addiction is strong-my younger brother smoked through a large portion of his cancer treatment (not related to tobacco) and my sister has refused to quit. I hoped she would quit simply because who would want to expose themselves to a known carcinogen if their own brother has already had a bout with cancer. That shows a family propensity toward cancer, so why expose yourself further? As far as my younger brother goes, it was a pretty simple proposition: I'm giving the bone marrow, you quit the cigarettes. It probably wasn't a necessary ultimatum, truth be told, but I gave it anyway. -
Very sad news. I guess that the royalty check Tom hand delivered didn't stretch that far. RIP.

Well-stated, Alan. When I first contacted them my first question was about availability of a brand new release and my second question was whether I could place an order direct or had to go through a retailer. I think its great that he sells direct to the public but I am sure he makes his money through his retail accounts, even though his margin is smaller.

Hey, how the heck do you have 100% positive feedback? Doing a little self-dealing are we? And I like this bit of nonsensical feedback someone placed: "An E-bayer among E-Bayers!" Well, um ... yeah, he's an "ebayer among ebayers", except when he goes to another auction site.

This is just wrong on so many levels ...

I understand that you've had more experience in this area but your description of how and why people dislocate their shoulders hardly applies to Griffey or for that matter Jeter. I don't think the strength of Griffey's tendons. Anyone who stretches out the way he did and lands the way he did can severely dislocate a shoulder, regardless of the strength of their tendons.

Well, I agree with you in principle but not at this point. The fact is that Cuscuna has said many times that most 1950s dates don't do well as reissues and that is why they have only seen the light of day as Mosaic sets (the Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Hank Mobley sets for example). So these are not the dates that Blue Note is reissuing and for those they do reissue, like the Messengers RVGs, well, they've just been sonically upgraded, and being available from the source the European labels can't expect to make much off of them. But you are right in principle ... eventually European law will make things like the Connoisseur series completely unnecessary. Will this ultimately hurt Mosaic? Perhaps though Mosaic has the added value of the limited edition nature and the "classy" image the company has worked hard to attain. And on the other hand, the European laws should work to finally eliminate Verve's padlock on almost all of their holdings, and that would be a good thing!

Is this that super rare Tyrone Washington LP?
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Forget justice, I'd settle for some of that . -
What can I say? I've been called worse. Heck I've even been called a "contemptible bastard" One bit of advice if anyone contacts Mr. Higgins directly: Don't ask him about "Music From Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". He's kinda touchy about that date.

Well, with five days to go its at $10. Wonder where it will end up. Where's Jim been? I think he said that he "thought" he saw it once but it might have only been a dream. He should be on this like ugly on Roseanne. -
"damn, that's one of my favorites..." corner
Dan Gould replied to Soul Stream's topic in Recommendations
I'll nominate two, both coincidentally have just three songs each: Red Garland Quintet, All Mornin' Long I posted about this elsewhere today, but this is a favorite from way back. I'm a sucker for long, slow blues and the title track fits that bill perfectly. Then throw in two terrific standards, "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Our Delight" and you have one near-perfect way to spend 37 minutes. Definitely do not get the feeling these guys were "watching the clock" on this Prestige jam! Dexter Gordon, One Flight Up Its been a while but its quite possible that this CD made me a Kenny Drew fan. Actually, to be honest, that was almost certainly Blue Train, but I first heard this one very close to the time that I heard Blue Train and Bluesnik, and these three albums were surely instrumental in getting me to sit up and take notice of Mr. Drew. But its much more than that. I never tire of the 18 minute long "Tanya" at the start of the record. I love the tension and release in the tune and the way the rhythm section works throughout. This tune has such a cool vibe to me, kind of makes me think Tanya was the kind of girl who kept you on your toes all the time but she made it worthwhile. "Coppin The Haven" may be my favorite Kenny Drew composition, and even though its like I know every note in his solo, it kills me everytime. And then we wrap it up with an absolutely classic example of Dex' balladry, 'Darn That Dream". Beautiful and heartbreaking. "Kong Neptune", the CD bonus, is just icing on the cake! -
What is your biggest music related D'oh!?
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Man, my latest "d'oh" is painful both fiscally and musically. Remember my "Dusty Groove-itis" thread? Well, I did miss out on the Paul Griffin "Soul Sauce" LP but it got me thinking and I decided to see if I could track it down. Took no time at all as it turned out to be listed on a website I had cruised several times but never actually ordered from. But what's this? They list two different Paul Griffin LPs, the aforementioned "Pours on Some Soul Sauce" and also "Plays Swinging Soul". Different labels, too, one is Somerset and one is Audio Fidelity or something "audio". Maybe it was the residual effects of DG-itis but I decided if I was going to try Paul Griffin I was really gonna go whole hog. And what's this they have? Houston Person on Westbound, Get Outa My Way? Well, I really liked the Eastwind live double lp from the same time period, oh sure, throw that in too. So, the box arrives a couple of days ago. I take a look at the two Paul Griffins and what do I see? Like 3/4s of the titles are the same! And what do I hear? Yes indeed, the exact same album, with just a few titles changed! At least the music turned out OK, with a strong gospel groove, not as commercial as I'd feared. Wish I could say the same thing about the Houston Person. I knew what I had just by glancing at the first title of the first side: Disco Sax Its worse than it sounds. I think there was more musical content in Rick Dees' "Disco Duck". And as a board member pointed out to me, if we combine those two titles we almost come up with a motto: Disco Sucks -
This came to mind as I was digging, really digging, "All Mornin' Long". I just love the slow blues title track, maybe its just the fact that I've always been a fan of the tune, but I adore Donald Byrd's statement of the theme on "They Can't take That Away From Me" and then they bring it home with a classic Dameron composition, also a big favorite, "Our Delight". For a "jam session" this is a heckuva an album! Any other nominations among all of those Red Garland/Coltrane jam dates?

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
I don't know how many noticed my post to the Byrd/Pepper thread but I suggested a way of discussing less available or even downright rare LPs if the owner of that record would be willing to send maybe 5 burns out to the first five declared participants and subsequent participants would receive burns from those five, sort of a "burning tree" as it were. Given a little more lead time, rare music could be distributed in time for a discussion. Might also be interesting if participants only had a list of personnel and tunes and no liners to help them. On that basis, I can offer: Gloria Coleman, Soul Sisters (with Grant Green) Swingin On The Vibories (Kenny Drew, Sonny Clark, Gerry Wiggins taking turns on a set of vibes that play like a piano) Mad About Tadd, a Dameron tribute LP featuring Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath and Kenny Barron The Super Jazz Trio with Art Farmer, Something Tasty (Jim R. can attest to the excellence of this recording) Philly Joe Jones and Dameronia, Look Stop and Listen and To Tadd With Love Jon Hendricks, Good Git Together (World Pacific with the Adderleys, the Montgomerys and Pony Poindexter) And really off the beaten track, Bumble Bee Slim, Back in Town! (Pacific Jazz with Groove Holmes, Les McCann, Curtis Amy, Joe Pass) I guess if there is a groundswell of support, whoever has an upcoming choice can pick me and then I just might leave it up to a vote for which one I will send out. I do think this is a good way to expand choices and experiences. -
When Mr. Rogers passed there was some discussion of his show's music director, and now I have found a copy of Johnny Costa's Dot records release, In My Own Quiet Way. Anyone familiar with it? Thanks!

As with all matters socio-political, you're not too perceptive are you? That link is to an archive of the board, not the board itself. Have you checked today's date? I would think you've lived in this country long enough to know what April 1st signifies.
