  1. The budget is also designed to create more than 1,000 new county jobs. It was Romney( i was not a supporter but he makes sense ,sometimes) who said in his goodbye speech "Did you see that today, government workers make more money than people who work in the private sector. Can you imagine what happens to an economy where the best opportunities are for bureaucrats?" I can't believe that people in our government still think its a business, creating jobs in government is not the answer. a thousand county jobs ?.......a 1,000 ? what are they Johnson and Johnson , do they manufacture a product?
  2. After watching the first and second seasons , i would say Zappa was the most riveting i loved that he included Don Pardo into I'm the Slime. Also great performances by The Meters , Paul Simon , The Kinks and jimmy Cliff was Great !
  3. Found this cd at Newbury yesterday for $5.99 . So they sell this for $49.99 on ebay, $22.99 on their Amazon store and in the brick and mortar for $5.99 !
  4. The test that Mr D'Imperio sent to you, Chris, was actually forwarded to him by me and originated with my youngest daughter, who sent it to me. No matter. It's a test that most of us, including those who hold the reins of power, like Dubbya would fail. It's interesting, I think, to note that many respected Canadian journalists did not graduate from highschool. A few who are very well known here are Gordon Sinclair, [8th grade], Betty Kennedy, [8th grade] and Peter Jennings [yes, the late ABC anchorman, 10th grade]. When asked about their lack of formal education they all said that they left school because they had opportunities that they couldn't pass up. All of them also said that they never stopped reading everything they could get their hands on. All of them travelled, learned foreign languages, immersed themselves in other cultures and knew that their formal education was not the end of learning. Contrast that with graduates of, oh I don't know, Harvard, Yale etc. who think that being in possession of a piece of paper that says they graduated from a prestigeous university means that they don't have to continue to learn. Truly intelligent people know that formal education is just the beginning of their intellectual journey. "If one studies too zealously, one easily loses his pants." --Albert Einstein
  5. Thanks for posting this - bet there were more than a few drinks spilt when this was transmitted (mid-80s?). Too bad they cut it off for commercials just when the band were hitting the groove. This is from the 1st year, 1976. Sun Ra was on the third season of SNL May 20th 1978. They are releasing the 3rd season on dvd in May.
  6. This stuff is GREAT.....i love the Donald Byrd one.
  7. I bet i will come across one at a Newbury Comics store for $3.99-$5.99 . I find lots of OJCs at Newbury for $3.99 that they try to sell online (ebay/amazon) for upwards of $49.99 Last week i found a brand new still sealed Sonny Simmons Burning Spirits for $3.99 and they are selling it on amazon for $49.99. I'am starting to question how rare some of these really are , maybe Newbury are sitting on a few hundred of these titles in their warehouse ?
  8. There is a statue of Red Auerbach at faneuil hall in Boston .
  9. I have this on Cassette , haven't listened to it in ages wasn't there a song on it called Big Big Love .
  10. I don't listen to jazz everyday of the year , my listening goes in cycles . Last year from July to December i was on a country binge. Dwight Yoakam , Marty Stuart, Vince gill and Ricky Scaggs (Damn can he play!) Also the new female country artists are fantastic ,while everyone is jumping on the Amy Winehype bandwagon your missing out on Miranda Lambert who IMHO put out the best album of 07 . At the beginning of this year i got on a Zappa binge ( how did i go from country to Zappa?) after i tortured my wife for a month Zappa led me back into jazz .......and the beat goes on ..who said that ?
  11. is that one gone by now or am i just too stupid to find it? Niko , I just found another copy of Happy Days at Newbury ..i grabbed it if you still want it PM me It's Yours !!! Mark
  12. Taping has been going on for years in the NFL , also the NFL is screwy what is the difference between all those guys up in a booth with headsets on looking down at the field communicating with the coach and videotaping? And why would the NFL allow coaches to send messages to quarterbacks 15 seconds before the start of a play ? The NFL has brought this on themselves , did Tom Landry ever wear a headset ? Back when i was a kid there were no headsets , quarterbacks didn't have fancy wrist bracelets with the plays on them players just went out and played . maybe the NFL should ban all headsets and all video taping and PHOTOGRAPHS , these teams get photos on the sideline they print them out and look at them .......jeeez.
  13. You need to track down the box set "the doings' lots of goodies on it especially disc 4 live stuff from 82 and demos. Also has some live material from 94/98.
  14. Well, if you like "Lockjaw", he was quite a bit with Basie in the 60s and early 70s. The Pablos signalled a return to straight ahead jazz after the pop excursions of the 60s. In a way they can be seen as more of the same, I suppose, but if one likes New Testament Basie, that is more of a good thing. And the sound is excellent on the Pablos too, superior to anything Basie had recorded before. The emphasis was on new charts by Sammy Nestico and others, and you get to hear Jimmy Forrest with the band in 1975-77, for example. By all means, get the earlier classic New Testament albums first, but if you after that want more, the Pablos should not be dismissed. (I'm talking about the big band albums here, the small groups were a different animal of course.) I agree, there is some great Basie on the 70's Pablo Big Band recordings (the 80's band I like less): Superb arrangements by Sammy Nestico and, on one album, by Bill Holman, great playing by Jimmy Forrest (as mentioned), Al Grey, Eric Dixon, Kenny Hing and Butch Miles, who was a perfect choice for the drum chair (a flashy and powerful drummer much in the vein of Sonny Payne). Which Pablo cds are recommended ?
  15. Dan , i would go with Horace Silver at newport !

  18. "Compared to the supernova Rimbaud rush of Hendrix, the nasty sneering lust of the Stones or the miraculously protean Beatles, jazz felt like yesterday's drug, one that might be able to get me high if I knew the password, but whose shelf life might have permanently expired." I think Rocks shelf life is on life support at this point in time....

  21. Me too. Dirty Harry, Taking of Pelham, Blaxploitation flicks. I love the scenes in the police precincts. Everyone looks so unhealthy. All the cops are fat, have bushy sideburns, and bad combovers. You can almost smell the stale cigarettes and coffee in the air. And they're always eating these enormous pastrami sandwiches... The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three is a great movie! Rainy day today , so i stayed in and watched Pelham One,Two,Three on the retroplex channel. Perfect movie for a day like today very gritty looking . That BIG yellow tie Matthau wore at the beginning of the movie not only clashed with his shirt and jacket but it was also the only bright color in the whole movie.
  22. On the news yesterday they showed Schilling doing sprints ....DAMN did he get Fatter !..he was winded after a short sprint ?..i thought he had a weight clause in his contract ?
