  1. Check out some Archie Shepp stuff from the 80s & 90s. Art Farmer was still recording then too, and Blame It On My Youth is a good one. Also check out Sam Rivers' Lazuli which is more inside stuff, but I'd also recommend anything he was doing during this time.
  2. Searching by label could help. Some really good releases were on Black Saint, Soul Note, AUM & ECM, at least in my limited exposure to 90s jazz. In particular albums from Muhal Richard Abrams, Julius Hemphill, Tim Berne, Matthew Shipp, Bill Frisell and Kenny Wheeler come to mind. Regarding Jackie McLean, I love some of his later output. Rites of Passage is a good one. But the best one that comes to mind is Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages from '91. A classic in every sense, with some nice vinyl reissues coming within the past year.
  3. 32 Jazz - what a great budget reissue label
  4. New one for me too. Her most recent credit from '16 looks interesting: https://www.discogs.com/Alchemy-Sound-Project-Further-Explorations/release/8705685
  5. Same Resonance label that did all the other Evans (Some other Time, Another Time, etc.).
  6. If you want these on CD, then these mono versions (and Mosaic's) are probably the way to go if the mastering is done right. Those old Candid CD reissues from the 90s don't sound great in stereo but they're the easiest to come by.
  7. Incredible album.
  8. I've been told that this set can be marred with overuse of noise reduction but I didn't notice it on my set. It may be there, but it's not obvious to me. What's your take on this?
  9. Love some arco bass solos. Y'all are weird.
  10. Any names come from that stable that became famous or at least well known?
  11. Yeah, I see Brubeck as well.
  12. I can only guess touring and recording in other bands and whatever was going on in his personal life as the reasons that limited his time/availability for leader dates.
  13. On the very long list of jazz artists that died way, way, way too young.
  14. Love this album.
  15. Not sure but he sadly passed at age 33, which is probably the main reason. He was also really busy while playing, just a very productive but all too short career. No idea on the Coltrane question though.
  16. He's no Ray Brown when it comes to arco but it didn't bother me. He's a sincere player and it came across that way to me. I enjoyed the whole mood and atmosphere of the album. I can't wait to listen to it again actually.
  17. We are completely opposite in that regard lol.
  18. Pure Pleasure has been reissuing some of these Tribe records for the past couple of years and been doing a good job of it. So that's a more affordable option other than the VMP box.
  19. No, but I've read where they really help the sound on mono recordings, even if the record's physical condition is below average. Congrats on your buy. Hope you enjoy the tunes!
  20. I meant on the Sangoma track...I think I read that CD image right...?
  21. Strong playing from McBee on this one.
