  1. C'MON, YOU READY???? 1, 2, And here's another especially for Joe!
  2. From the music trivia department: The debut album from Chicago-based Coven included a song titled "Black Sabbath", roughly a year before Black Sabbath's debut album was released. Bass player of Coven: Oz Osbourne. Not "the" Ozzy -- this has confused me for years. I actually have a vinyl copy of that record, and I always just assumed it was Ozzy. Weird.
  3. Stephen Cole Bear has a pretty funny show on Comedy Central.
  4. Well, Uncle Ted sure can rock, but even his guitar can't cut through solid steel doors! And here's one for Big Al: upright bass, mandolin, accordion...
  5. What Skid sez. I also have that Basie set and, other than the bar code, it is completely indistinguishable from what you'd find at any bricknmortar. I just looked at my copy of "America's #1 Band", and its bar code and packaging have nothing to indicate that it was from BMG. But, my copy of Basie "Complete Decca Recordings" does have "Mfd. for BMG Direct" underneath the bar code. With or without BMG bar code... some very fantastic (and affordable) music is available on YM.
  6. Yes. The music is indeed quite good! I think there will always be an (inflated) eBay market for OOP Mosaics, if only for those (like myself) that become interested in various sets long after they're gone. I'm completely shocked by the $ amounts that the (fairly recently) OOP Morgan/Shorter set is fetching. I was lucky enough to have purchased that one before it was gone -- but I can say confidently that there is no way I would pay $200+ for that set now. It's good... but THAT good?? (The Andrew Hill set is another matter entirely!) The JJ, however, has been in print for so long that I would hope that everybody that wants a copy already has one. BUT, I can't say I'd be surprised if you are right. OOP Mosaics are instantly more valuable than in-print titles, and eBay prices have never made any sense to me!
  7. Rooster, As far as I can tell, ALL of the box sets I've ordered from YM are indistinguishable from the sets that can be purchased from other online merchants, and from bookstores like Borders and B&N. I have the following from YM, and even though I don't have Cellar Door (yet!), I'd bet that it is no different. I'm sure others will chime in here if this is not the case. * The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions * Count Basie And His Orchestra - America's #1 Band - The Columbia Years * Count Basie - The Complete Decca Recordings * John Coltrane - The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings * Miles Davis - Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings 1963-1964 BUT, many (if not all) of the single CDs I've received from them DO have a different bar code. For instance, the Blue Note RVGs and Conns say "Mfg for BMG Direct". Other than that, they also appear to be identical. I hope this helps!
  8. Cellar Door at Your Music = $35.94? $5.99 per disc!
  9. Thanks, Lon. I hope everything is going well...
  10. Hmmm.... I'd think the exact opposite -- 7,500 copies, been on the endangered list for at least a year now (maybe more?), been in print for quite a long time now... Of course, what really matters, is that this music ends up in the hands of those that really appreciate it, as opposed to speculators...
  11. I just received the Ellington single this morning. Very nice session. Lon, does your CD have the copyright printing extending into the clear area of the CD? Looks like the printing on mine was off somehow. A very minor issue -- just curious.
  12. Awesome! Picked up The Complete Hot Five And Hot Seven Recordings (Legacy) for $35, w/free shipping.
  13. Thanks for posting the liner notes!
  14. Yes -- this one probably would have never been "on my radar" if it hadn't just been reissued by Mosaic. And I suppose that's the problem with reissues in general -- trying to sort out what's "essential" vs. what's just interesting or "overdue". However, I am intrigued by this "small group" session. Should be a nice contrast to most of the other Ellington stuff I already have.
  15. Well?? How is it? Worthy of a reissue?
  16. Big fan of the black and tan, or a Guinness and Harp, which some refer to as a "Half and Half". From the Guinness "Black and Tan FAQ":
  17. Just found this used: Reminiscing at Blue Note (Hines, Pete Johnson, James P. Johnson) Includes "The Father's Getaway" and "Reminiscing at Blue Note", both from 1939. Are these the only two solo tracks Hines recorded for Blue Note? Is there any more solo Hines stuff available from this time period on other labels?
  18. Birthness? Happy Birthday, Mark!
  19. Added 4/12/06: Cecil Taylor - Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come Also added recently: Matthew Shipp: One Just downloaded this one: Matthew Shipp - Pastoral Composure
  20. Mama's Got the Lip-Synchin' Blues: Ashlee Simpson Sings Bessie Smith
  21. The True Blue "Discontinued" sale got to me: Duke Ellington : Complete Brunswick/Vocalion Recordings 1926–31; also added "The Cosmic Scene" (Mosaic Single) Amazon Marketplace: Earl Hines "Tour De Force" Yourmusic.com: Jimmy Rushing "Five Feet of Soul", Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions box, Benny Goodman Centennial Collection
  22. Thanks! I'll add that one to my already too-full YM shopping cart!
  23. Anybody have the Goodman Centennial Collection? Yourmusic has it for $12, and I'm wondering if this might be a decent (and inexpensive!) introduction. The DVD looks like it has a lot of good footage.
  24. Klaster -- another nice Czech beer, similar to Pilsner Urquell. They also had a very nice winter lager this year. Had a "black and tan" recently -- can't beat the combination of Bass and Guinness, but Smithwicks works pretty good, too.
  25. Me, too. One heck of a nice guy!
