  1. Big fan of the black and tan, or a Guinness and Harp, which some refer to as a "Half and Half". From the Guinness "Black and Tan FAQ":
  2. Just found this used: Reminiscing at Blue Note (Hines, Pete Johnson, James P. Johnson) Includes "The Father's Getaway" and "Reminiscing at Blue Note", both from 1939. Are these the only two solo tracks Hines recorded for Blue Note? Is there any more solo Hines stuff available from this time period on other labels?
  3. Birthness? Happy Birthday, Mark!
  4. Added 4/12/06: Cecil Taylor - Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come Also added recently: Matthew Shipp: One Just downloaded this one: Matthew Shipp - Pastoral Composure
  5. Mama's Got the Lip-Synchin' Blues: Ashlee Simpson Sings Bessie Smith
  6. The True Blue "Discontinued" sale got to me: Duke Ellington : Complete Brunswick/Vocalion Recordings 1926–31; also added "The Cosmic Scene" (Mosaic Single) Amazon Marketplace: Earl Hines "Tour De Force" Yourmusic.com: Jimmy Rushing "Five Feet of Soul", Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions box, Benny Goodman Centennial Collection
  7. Thanks! I'll add that one to my already too-full YM shopping cart!
  8. Anybody have the Goodman Centennial Collection? Yourmusic has it for $12, and I'm wondering if this might be a decent (and inexpensive!) introduction. The DVD looks like it has a lot of good footage.
  9. Klaster -- another nice Czech beer, similar to Pilsner Urquell. They also had a very nice winter lager this year. Had a "black and tan" recently -- can't beat the combination of Bass and Guinness, but Smithwicks works pretty good, too.
  10. Me, too. One heck of a nice guy!
  11. Tepid, indeed! The Candids are on sale for $9.99, which doesn't sound bad... but, the regular price at CD Universe is $9.69.
  12. Well... we are sidetracking the Tower Sale thread (sorry BeBop)... but... Troy, hearing some things that are "typical" of Cecil is in itself a problem -- I'm still very much a Cecil "newbie", and the only thing I can say for sure is that he is anything but typical. You would really need to listen a lot of different things to even begin to form an accurate opinion. Having said that, check out some of his "earlier" works first: Looking Ahead (Contemporary/OJC) Jazz Advance (Transition - Blue Note) Cecil Taylor Quartet at Newport (Verve) The Cecil Taylor Unit/Roswell Rudd Sextet - Mixed (Impulse) Love for Sale (Blue Note) The World of Cecil Taylor (Candid) New York City R&B (Candid) Conquistador & Unit Structures (Blue Note)
  13. Sweet!
  14. :rsmile: Ronald, thanks for the sideman recommendations. I don't have any of the three you listed, but I'll be looking for them. I already have Shades, and agree that it is very nice, comparable to his Blue Note dates. Also, thanks very much for the work on the Hill discography!
  15. Thanks! I did a board search earlier, but that didn't come up. I just discovered that Conflict is available at EMusic. Also, Dusk is there, as is Walt Dickerson's To My Queen.
  16. You would also need Grass Roots (1969) and Lift Every Voice (1970). Right - & I do. Well, get on it then!! And don't forget about his Blue Note sideman appearances: Joe Henderson Our Thing Hank Mobley No Room For Squares Bobby Hutcherson Dialogue Thanks for the info on the Mosaic, Rooster. I finally found a used copy awhile back, and I'm very glad I bought it. The unreleased portions (Compulsion, Involution, and the "Pax" session) are among my favorites on the box. In fact, I tend to listen to those sessions more than Andrew! and Smokestack. Slightly off topic, this thread got me wondering what else is out there (sideman appearances, etc) that I didn't have yet. This may have already been mentioned on the board, but the Spiral LP, in its entirety, is available for downloading (160k MP3s) at Andrew's website. I'm also interested in Jimmy Woods Conflict: Jimmy Woods (as), Harold Land (ts), Carmell Jones (t), Andrew Hill (p), George Tucker (b), Elvin Jones (d). Any comments on this one?
  17. You would also need Grass Roots (1969) and Lift Every Voice (1970).
  18. Listening to Earl Hines right now!
  19. ... or maybe you're following him? go ahead, 'fess up. we won't be too brutal on you, and you'll feel better telling us the truth
  20. Everything from the Andrew Hill Mosaic is getting awfully close to being readily available. I'm going to hold on to my copy anyway -- it's nice to have it all in one place, and the book is indispensable. I'm thinking that most of the Candid Cecil Taylor is available elsewhere, except for maybe a few alternate takes?
  21. Indeed. That was a very nice article by Mark Stryker. I'm pretty sure I saw him logged on to the board earlier today -- thanks, Mark!
  22. Happy Birthday, Lazaro!
  23. I'm still waiting for "Michael Bublé: Sings and Plays the Cecil Taylor Songbook". Also trying to find the now OOP "Spyro Gyra: It's Stormy Outside: The Weather Channel Years".
  24. I saw that, too. I was pretty surprised, but I'm glad someone at the paper took the time to put it in.
