Up, for further discussion, recommendations, etc. Picked up Actuality recently, and still trying to get a handle on Mr. Lacy's huge discography. Evidence, Reflections, and the duets with Mal Waldron have been my "entry point", and there's so much more to explore...

Biggest Technological Advance of the Last 20 Years
Uncle Skid replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I know this is slightly (>30 years) off topic, but the biggest technological advance in the last 50 years is the integrated circuit. All of the stuff discussed in this thread would not have been possible without it -- huge ramifications of this invention, even to this day. /geek -
The Earl Hines set I found appears to have been played once, maybe twice. Pristine records, detailed book -- my gain, indeed!

what are you drinking right now?

Now all they need to do is add some citrus -- maybe an orange? -
Thanks for posting that... I've almost purchased both the Shepp and Ayler "Impulse Story" discs (as I have very little of both artists) at regular prices. Now that I can get them for $5.99, it might make the decision easier. or not... I usually regret buying compilation CDs, as I usually end up wanting all of the individual recordings.

a trade has been made... -
Thanks for all the informative responses. My first exposure to Billy Bang was on the Cecil Taylor documentary "All the Notes", and I've been interested ever since.

Japanese import, purchased from those Dusty bastards. $20 post paid in US. Or trade... particularly interested in anything by Waldron/Lacy, or anything from the "Free America" series (other than Waldron/Lacy).

(and thanks for reminding me about darkfunk.com -- I had bookmarked it awhile back, but never got around to checking out the music!)

Sorry about the confusion -- Matthew, if you have a CD burning program that gives you the option to burn an audio disc from MP3 files (like Nero), the conversion process should happen automagically.
-
If you burn MP3 files directly to a CD, it won't play in audio CD players, unless the player specifically supports MP3. My car and home CD players both do not support MP3, so the only way to play something that was originally in MP3 format on those players is to first convert MP3 to WAV, and then burn a "regular" audio CD. Dan's correct that MP3s are condensed and lossy formats, but converting them to WAV does not result in any further audio degradation. Downloading and saving stuff from Sonny Rollins site should be very similar.

(assuming you're running windows...) On the darkfunk site, try right clicking on each song title and then "save link as" -- this should bring up a dialog box that lets you specify where the file will be saved. For instance, the 1969-07-25 concert has seven tunes, you will need to save each song individually. There doesn't appear to be any way to save an entire concert in one shot. After the songs are saved, you should be able to play them anytime by double clicking on the file names. Also, it's possible to convert the saved MP3 files to .WAV files, which can be used to burn audio CDs. Let us know if you want to do that as well... Hope this helps!

I just discovered this series -- came across the Earl Hines set for $10 in a used shop. Booklet and LPs in very good shape. They also had the Benny Carter set for the same price... I might need to go back!

So is it working now, or what??? :rsmile: The "Auto Level" setting comes in pretty handy -- "the [recording level] volume control automatically lowers itself if the level is too high" when this is set.

That's on my reading list--what do you think? Excellent. Highly recommended. "Academic", yet very readable; a thorough but not overwhelming discussion of the historical events that contributed to the "urban crisis". What sticks with me the most is the sometimes very subtle ways in which discrimination created (and still creates) situations that made it very difficult for huge numbers of people to find work, decent housing, etc. The complex interaction of seemingly unrelated events was especially illuminating. On a personal note, I was raised in Detroit, and (as a kid, anyway) witnessed many of the events described in the book. The "white flight" of the 1970's was something that has always puzzled me, and the book does a very good job of explaining what led up to the exodus of so many people to the suburbs. *** Just finished The Catcher in the Rye. I've been re-reading that one every 5 years or so for about 25 years now, and I get more out of it each time. This time especially...

What's next on your YourMusic.com queue?
Uncle Skid replied to GA Russell's topic in Recommendations
I don't have a lot of Rollins either -- but The Bridge is one of my favorite recordings, period. Looks like Rollin's "Complete Prestige Recordings" box set has disappeared from YM. My most recent queue arrival: Buena Vista Social Club -- recommended by a fellow board member (Aggie87, IIRC). Thanks, Erik!!! -
Up, for any new comments and/or Billy Bang recommendations in general. I saw this one in my local bookstore, and almost bought it. Hesitated when I realized that is was the followup to "Vietnam: The Aftermath", which I also haven't heard yet.
-
Thanks for the quick responses! I have a K2 of "Thelonious Monk - Prestige P-7027" here -- from the Concord sale.
-
Which individual K2's make up the Prestige box set? The box set also includes alternate takes, I assume?
