(and thanks for reminding me about darkfunk.com -- I had bookmarked it awhile back, but never got around to checking out the music!)

Sorry about the confusion -- Matthew, if you have a CD burning program that gives you the option to burn an audio disc from MP3 files (like Nero), the conversion process should happen automagically.
-
If you burn MP3 files directly to a CD, it won't play in audio CD players, unless the player specifically supports MP3. My car and home CD players both do not support MP3, so the only way to play something that was originally in MP3 format on those players is to first convert MP3 to WAV, and then burn a "regular" audio CD. Dan's correct that MP3s are condensed and lossy formats, but converting them to WAV does not result in any further audio degradation. Downloading and saving stuff from Sonny Rollins site should be very similar.

(assuming you're running windows...) On the darkfunk site, try right clicking on each song title and then "save link as" -- this should bring up a dialog box that lets you specify where the file will be saved. For instance, the 1969-07-25 concert has seven tunes, you will need to save each song individually. There doesn't appear to be any way to save an entire concert in one shot. After the songs are saved, you should be able to play them anytime by double clicking on the file names. Also, it's possible to convert the saved MP3 files to .WAV files, which can be used to burn audio CDs. Let us know if you want to do that as well... Hope this helps!

I just discovered this series -- came across the Earl Hines set for $10 in a used shop. Booklet and LPs in very good shape. They also had the Benny Carter set for the same price... I might need to go back!

So is it working now, or what??? :rsmile: The "Auto Level" setting comes in pretty handy -- "the [recording level] volume control automatically lowers itself if the level is too high" when this is set.

That's on my reading list--what do you think? Excellent. Highly recommended. "Academic", yet very readable; a thorough but not overwhelming discussion of the historical events that contributed to the "urban crisis". What sticks with me the most is the sometimes very subtle ways in which discrimination created (and still creates) situations that made it very difficult for huge numbers of people to find work, decent housing, etc. The complex interaction of seemingly unrelated events was especially illuminating. On a personal note, I was raised in Detroit, and (as a kid, anyway) witnessed many of the events described in the book. The "white flight" of the 1970's was something that has always puzzled me, and the book does a very good job of explaining what led up to the exodus of so many people to the suburbs. *** Just finished The Catcher in the Rye. I've been re-reading that one every 5 years or so for about 25 years now, and I get more out of it each time. This time especially...

What's next on your YourMusic.com queue?
Uncle Skid replied to GA Russell's topic in Recommendations
I don't have a lot of Rollins either -- but The Bridge is one of my favorite recordings, period. Looks like Rollin's "Complete Prestige Recordings" box set has disappeared from YM. My most recent queue arrival: Buena Vista Social Club -- recommended by a fellow board member (Aggie87, IIRC). Thanks, Erik!!! -
Up, for any new comments and/or Billy Bang recommendations in general. I saw this one in my local bookstore, and almost bought it. Hesitated when I realized that is was the followup to "Vietnam: The Aftermath", which I also haven't heard yet.

Thanks for the quick responses! I have a K2 of "Thelonious Monk - Prestige P-7027" here -- from the Concord sale.
-
Which individual K2's make up the Prestige box set? The box set also includes alternate takes, I assume?

Check out those scalloped frets!

Live from Blue Lake, Faculty Jazz Sextet
Uncle Skid replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Thanks, Lazaro. I'm listening! The band sounds great -- and I always love hearing Mr. Froncek on drums! My dad called me on his cell phone right before the show started -- told me to tune in at 10pm. He's there for this week's camp (clarinet player). -
Mosaic big box sets
Uncle Skid replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I also have 9, and regret one: Anita O'Day. Nine CDs of Anita is about 6 or 7 more than I need at this point. -
Earl Hines - Another Monday Date This is actually two dates -- a quartet (Hines, Eddie Duran-guitar, Dean Reilly-bass, Earl Watkins-drums), and a solo session. Recorded for Fantasy 1955-1956; the "sympathetic quartet setting" surveys the music of Fats Waller, while the solo session includes many originals made famous in the '20s and '30s. Very nice record! Best "new" find for me so far, second only to the Ellington Suites.

Looks like quite a few of the recordings discussed here are available from the Jazz Loft. Interestingly, "Let's call this... Esteem" is also available as a $9.99 download.

Vandermark Five - Alchemia

I wanna listen! A rodcast of anything from that set would be much appreciated! -
Poor Mark -- asks a simple question about jazz in Vegas, and this is what he gets. We should be ashamed of ourselves... Nah, just kidding!

Hey man, Barry Williams friggin' RULES on guitar...
-
Just make sure she's not married first!

I've skimmed parts of it, and have been very impressed so far. Very nicely done, thorough, tons of pictures, discography, 2-page sections dedicated to some of the important recordings... I can't help but thinking that it would be great if Mr. Kahn did something similar for Blue Note Records. Richard Cook's book pales in comparison.

"Jazz Advance: Early Cecil Taylor" on Night Lights
Uncle Skid replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Up again -- this show is now available in the archives. (also wanted to put in a request for one or more follow-up shows -- the Candid releases, "Mixed", etc...) -
Here's something to comtemplate: which would you rather be: A Dennis DeYoung imitator, or a Steve Perry imitator? On a completely unrelated note, my daughter has recently started playing Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" on the piano. My wife and I almost immediately started singing excerpts from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce2qRtdaZfg My daughter's reaction? , followed by
