  1. And the musical tastes of a 14-year-old from 1985.... like me! (and Marcus... Big Al's as nice and kind in person as he is on the internet! )
  2. couw's way looks pretty easy -- let us know if that worked. I took a slightly longer route: under Linux, I wrote a script that 1) reads the .ram file, 2) downloads the .rm file, 3) converts the .rm to .wav, and finally 4) encodes the .wav to .mp3 (using LAME). This is kind of a round about way of doing it, but it's nice to have the .wav files in case I ever need to burn a CD. In fact, a fellow board member was interested in hearing the Henry Grimes show, and the easiest thing to do was just burn a CD for him.
  3. Short answer: yes. Night Lights is indeed a great show! (Thanks, Ghost!) Longer, technical answer: the archives are stored in real audio format. If you click on an archive link, it is a small (.ram) file. This file is just a (text) link to the actual full program, a real audio (.rm) file. This .rm file can be saved to your hard drive, and then played without being connected to the internet: Right click on an archived program, and then save the link as a file. Open that file with a text editor (notepad, etc), and copy that link into your browser. Save the .rm file. It is also possible to convert a real audio file to MP3.
  4. I don't think I've ever looked at the "BMG Sale Corner" -- mainly because I'm already a yourmusic.com member, and the last thing I need is another way to spend money on CDs. Ongoing thread I'm most AFRAID to look at: "Running Low / Last Chance" in the Mosaic forum!
  5. Happy Birthday, Al! Here's your cake -- ROCK ON, DUDE!
  6. Let us all know when you have a firm date/time!
  7. Do not ignore Infinity. I'd love to not ignore Infinity, but as far as I know, it's only available as an expensive import. Maybe it too will be a Conn or RVG, sooner or later??
  8. I picked up Tom Cat this evening, and I'm glad I ignored the Penguin guys and went with Cliff's and Chuck's recommendations. Art Blakey is wonderful (especially on the title track), and I haven't found the three horns to be "cluttered" at all. This session kind of reminds me of my two favorite Morgan titles: Search for the New Land and The Procrastinator. "Riggarmortes" is credited to Lee Morgan, as are all tunes except "Twilight Mist" -- McCoy Tyner.
  9. I've never heard Tom Cat, and I'm wondering why the Penguin Guide guys have no love for that recording: "least distinguished of Morgan's Blue Notes", "three-horn front line sounds cluttered", "the arrangements have no air in them", etc. Any truth to that? Sure sounds like a good lineup, with an interesting selection of tunes...
  10. Last time I heard the word Moxie, I was in Maine!
  11. One of the aforementioned Hep CDs (Listen…You Shall Hear - Hep 1025) is available for $8.95 here: Jazzmatazz.
  12. Thanks -- looks like I need to make another YM order! Anybody familiar with this compilation - "Early Ellington: The Complete Brunswick Recordings (1926-1931)"?
  13. Where can I find a recording of Black and Tan Fantasy with Bubber Miley on trumpet? I'm looking for the "Victor, 1927" version described in the chapter on "The Ellington Style" in Shuller's Early Jazz. I have a Columbia/Legacy version (Okeh?), but this one has Jabbo Smith instead of Miley. And (more generally), where's the best place to start with early Ellington? The numerous recordings on Brunswick, Vocalion, Columbia, Victor and Okeh, as well as all of reissues and compliations has me quite confused.
  14. Actually, it's more like hanging a Thomas Kinkade next to a DaVinci painting.
  15. I find it really hard to believe that ANYONE could be fly in the Aquinas College field house, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
  16. Well, I must be a neanderthal or something... the Decca/GRP set sounds OK to me. Would love to hear the Hep CDs, but the opportunity costs are just too high -- too much other music on the want list!
  17. Below is an example of Cecil's notation, from this documentary. Also from the documentary:
  18. Like Frank, I also don't have a ton of Basie stuff, so I'm looking forward to more recommendations. In addition to Atomic Basie, you definitely need this one: I believe this is still available from Yourmusic.com for $17.97 (3-CD set).
  19. Very nice record -- "Swotterings" and "Tea and Watercolors" are my current favorites.
  20. So much for that New Year's resolution!
  21. Either that, or he had to go on a BEER RUN!!
  22. Tristano - Konitz - Marsh "Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh", June 14, 1955 session
  23. Somebody once told me that was a good CD. He was right!! If Big Al is picking the music, better make sure you dust off your Styx CDs!
  24. Star Bright is on the Dizzy Reece Mosaic Select. Excellent session! Another vote for Compulsion!!!!! -- anything with that many exclamation points just HAS to be great, right? Also would like to see Unit Structures as an RVG or Conn.
