  1. Does anyone know how the Japanese versions compare to the Verve "Master Editions"? Bonus tracks, sound quality, liner notes, etc. I already have Clifford Brown and Max Roach (Master Edition), and I'm really torn between picking up the rest of these on the box set, or additional individual Master Editions, or by buying the Japanese versions offered here. The price is attractive, but I'm just confused with too many options!
  2. Looks like prices for the Andrew Hill set are coming down, too: $193. A second Hill set sold for $255 a few days later, so maybe somebody just got lucky to score it for less than $200. Regardless of price, great music! I wonder if the price drop has anything to do with the recent re-releases of Judgment and Andrew? Or maybe not, as I recall seeing the Grant Green Mosaic selling for huge amounts of $, and I was under the impression that most (if not all) of the material on that set was easily available.
  3. Bobby Jaspar, who I've been diggin' lately on the J. J. Johnson Mosaic. Oh yeah?? I was born on the same day and year as Cindy Crawford!!
  4. My latest queue selection (Blue Note Perfect Takes) was also supposed to ship on 9/15. It finally arrived just a few days ago. I heard nothing from them until I received an email a week ago, in which they apologized and said it would be shipped "express", right away. Not that it really mattered to me, but it didn't arrive any faster - it was shipped standard US postage, as usual.
  5. I don't recall if this was mentioned before, but it is fairly quick and easy to disable the "Auto Run" feature in Windows permanently, so that holding the shift key for every CD would no longer be necessary. This copy protection stuff infuriates me. It penalizes the honest consumer.
  6. Heard it this evening as well, very interesting. My only complaint is that it was too short! My wife (who listens to NPR much more than I do) called me from her car and told me to turn on NPR right away -- she knew I might be interested in a story about Monk and Trane. At the time she called, I was listening to the new disc! What are the chances??
  7. :o Yikes!! When I first saw "Mosaic boxes in danger" I thought it was something like Mosaic giving up selling the big boxes or something. I was quite relieved to see the subtitle of this thread! Another big for the Mobley set, it gets better and better with repeated listenings. I'm also glad I got the J. J. set before it goes away. Is the Parlan set in danger yet? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it might be next.
  8. I'm up for poppin' open a few cans of whupass on that Snuggle Bear!
  9. That's a mighty fine German beer, Chris. I used to buy that fairly frequently, but now it's over $10 a six pack. Tonight's selection is a little less expensive, and from a brewery much closer to home: Sprecher Special Amber (Glendale, Wisconsin)
  10. Happy Birthday, Bill. I hope the wine was good, and that you had some good fish to go with it! (I heard a rumor that there's a texas hold'em tournament at Bill's house tonight)
  11. Yeah, my Windows PC does suck. I like my Linux box much better. But I still think iTunes sucks. Not that it really matters, but here are just a few reasons why I don't like it: 1) I think it's totally ridiculous for ANY mp3 player to require the use of special software to transfer files back and forth. My other hard drive player (Archos Jukebox) simply shows up as a removable hard drive -- it can't get much easier than that! 2) The first thing iTunes wants is my name and email address. Screw you, Apple. You don't need my email address to "serve me better". 3) Once installed, iTunes takes up a considerable amount of RAM, even when it is not running. 4) As Vibes mentioned, there are much better ways to rip music to Mp3.
  12. I recently got an iPod, and I have to agree that iTunes sucks big time. I also have of my music ripped to mp3's on my hard drive in folders (like Jazz\Artist\Album\), and this has worked well for years. I spent almost an hour messing around with iTunes, and couldn't figure out how to copy the music correctly. I finally gave up, and found a (free) plug-in for Winamp: ml_iPod. This worked great -- now it's easy to organise and copy mp3 files (and playlists) to the iPod.
  13. Looks similar to the one I just got a few days ago: Incase A little pricey, but it does the job. Since I got my iPod for free (won it in a drawing!), I figured I could treat myself to a nice case. It has a clear piece of plastic covering the screen, and overall seems to be very well constructed. I have the "U2" iPod -- so I *definitely* want to make sure that the band's autographs on the back don't get scratched up!!!
  14. That's actually worth quite a bit -- your endorsement is the difference between seriously looking at what's for sale and Chuck bait.
  15. Sign me up! Just make sure Von Freeman is in there somewhere! (and Mr. Haynes sure looks great for 80 years old! )
  16. How 'bout a 2006 Mark Sheldon Jazz Photography calendar??
  17. No guilty conscience, simply a case of one-upmanship to all the Kenny-G lovers on this board who think they have bad taste in music. Just don't get me started on Aldo Nova or Loverboy again, man!
  18. You mean like Spyro Gyra? ← I'll fess up to owning one G-Man CD: Silhouette, from 1988. I bought it used, probably in '88 or '89. The sad thing is that this isn't the worst music I've ever purchased -- somewhere, buried deep in the bowels of my basement, is a vinyl copy of Michael Bolton's debut album. Seriously.
  19. Ed, If Pittsburgh or Buffalo doesn't work out for whatever reason, and you still feel like driving, they play Grand Rapids, Michigan quite often. That's less than an hour from here, and I'm always up for a show and board "hang" there. I'd bet Chuck (and possibly Upright Bill) would be as well. Looks like there are two coming up in September: September 13 - 9:00pm to 1:00am Founders Brew Co. - Grand Rapids, MI September 23 - 7:30pm to 9:30pm Schuler Books - Grand Rapids, MI Be sure to let us know if you're heading this way! -- Mark
  20. ... abducted by some Jazz stalker ... That really strikes me as funny for some reason... brings up a mental image a Kenny G fan being kidnapped and forced to listen to Albert Ayler or late Coltrane or something. My spouse used to think I was a bit crazy hanging out on line with a bunch of "jazz geeks". But after meeting and having dinner with Chuck and Ann (as well as Mr. and Mrs. Upright Bill, and catesta/Katrina), she sees that while were are all definitely jazz geeks, we aren't all that bad! It also gave her the opportunity to see that I'm not the only one buys tons of jazz CDs. The trick is to only hang out with board members who own *way* more CDs than I do!!
