Tepid, indeed! The Candids are on sale for $9.99, which doesn't sound bad... but, the regular price at CD Universe is $9.69.

Well... we are sidetracking the Tower Sale thread (sorry BeBop)... but... Troy, hearing some things that are "typical" of Cecil is in itself a problem -- I'm still very much a Cecil "newbie", and the only thing I can say for sure is that he is anything but typical. You would really need to listen a lot of different things to even begin to form an accurate opinion. Having said that, check out some of his "earlier" works first: Looking Ahead (Contemporary/OJC) Jazz Advance (Transition - Blue Note) Cecil Taylor Quartet at Newport (Verve) The Cecil Taylor Unit/Roswell Rudd Sextet - Mixed (Impulse) Love for Sale (Blue Note) The World of Cecil Taylor (Candid) New York City R&B (Candid) Conquistador & Unit Structures (Blue Note)

:rsmile: Ronald, thanks for the sideman recommendations. I don't have any of the three you listed, but I'll be looking for them. I already have Shades, and agree that it is very nice, comparable to his Blue Note dates. Also, thanks very much for the work on the Hill discography!

Thanks! I did a board search earlier, but that didn't come up. I just discovered that Conflict is available at EMusic. Also, Dusk is there, as is Walt Dickerson's To My Queen.

You would also need Grass Roots (1969) and Lift Every Voice (1970). Right - & I do. Well, get on it then!! And don't forget about his Blue Note sideman appearances: Joe Henderson Our Thing Hank Mobley No Room For Squares Bobby Hutcherson Dialogue Thanks for the info on the Mosaic, Rooster. I finally found a used copy awhile back, and I'm very glad I bought it. The unreleased portions (Compulsion, Involution, and the "Pax" session) are among my favorites on the box. In fact, I tend to listen to those sessions more than Andrew! and Smokestack. Slightly off topic, this thread got me wondering what else is out there (sideman appearances, etc) that I didn't have yet. This may have already been mentioned on the board, but the Spiral LP, in its entirety, is available for downloading (160k MP3s) at Andrew's website. I'm also interested in Jimmy Woods Conflict: Jimmy Woods (as), Harold Land (ts), Carmell Jones (t), Andrew Hill (p), George Tucker (b), Elvin Jones (d). Any comments on this one?

What Mosaics Can We Safely Unload?
Uncle Skid replied to DMP's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Everything from the Andrew Hill Mosaic is getting awfully close to being readily available. I'm going to hold on to my copy anyway -- it's nice to have it all in one place, and the book is indispensable. I'm thinking that most of the Candid Cecil Taylor is available elsewhere, except for maybe a few alternate takes? -
Indeed. That was a very nice article by Mark Stryker. I'm pretty sure I saw him logged on to the board earlier today -- thanks, Mark!

Happy Birthday, Lazaro!

Hilarious "*blank* Plays *blank*" albums
Uncle Skid replied to Chad.mundt's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm still waiting for "Michael Bublé: Sings and Plays the Cecil Taylor Songbook". Also trying to find the now OOP "Spyro Gyra: It's Stormy Outside: The Weather Channel Years". -
I saw that, too. I was pretty surprised, but I'm glad someone at the paper took the time to put it in.

What Jackie McLean are you spinning.......

DAMN! I love this record! -
Yeah, our date format might not make sense, but you guys use commas where decimal points should be, so that makes us even!

Here's another one -- this is particularly evil -- the message seems reasonable and the URL looks legit, but clicking on it would be real bad thing...

I actually have a Chase visa, and I do use their online access frequently. I also got this email last week, and it is one of the best phishing scams I've ever seen. The only thing that gave it away was the URL -- definitely NOT from chase.com. The URL was somewhere in the ".kr" domain -- Korea, I believe.

Jackie and Tina Brooks! -
"Jazz is a happy thing and there are a lot of musicians around waiting to give a little happiness to a world filled with so much unrest." There's one less tonight... Thank you, Mr. McLean. I know you gave so many of us more than just a little happiness over the years...

Thanks, GM, for more gas guzzlers
Uncle Skid replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, the decision was not very difficult in this case. I ended up getting the non-hybrid version, and I average >30 mpg on the highway. City has been around 25-26. I average well less than 10,000 miles per year, as I work at home most of the time, so high gas prices don't hurt me as bad as some. The Prius and the Civic Hybrid are on the short list for next car. Now that we have our "big family" car (the Accord), we can get something smaller next time. The Honda was my first non GM car. That was a difficult decision. -

Answer: enough people to make it worthwhile to continue manufacturing these things. The cars and trucks that GM is making today is the result of decisions made many years ago. Let's hope things are considerably different 10 years from now. And the core of the problem is not the car manufacturers, but us. All of us. The hybrids may be a good start, but I'm still astounded (disillusioned?) that we haven't seen any serious talk about better public transportation. Heck, how about just carpool lanes -- if California can do it, why not SE Michigan? High speed rail? Incidentally, I seriously looked at buying an Accord Hybrid. The numbers just don't add up, unless you are driving an obscene number of miles per year. Erik, I also read many articles on the subject, and the bottom line (from a purely financial perspective) is that Hybrids, in many cases, aren't the most economical choice. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Uncle Skid replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Carmell Jones - Mosaic Select, disc 2 Business Meetin' and Brass Bag sessions - w/ Harold Land, Frank Strazzeri. Gerald Wilson arrangements. I haven't listened to this one in awhile -- I had forgotten how *really good* it is. -
Not even a single disc by: Earl Hines (will remedy that soon!) Randy Weston (need to remedy that for sure) Horace Parlan (thinking about getting the Mosaic eventually) Stan Kenton Chet Baker Benny Goodman Nat King Cole Keith Jarrett Gerry Mulligan Errol Garner Jimmy Guiffre Ahmad Jamal Lonnie Smith Also, no Stan Getz other than a few old LPs that I borrowed from my father. Until recently, I was also very light on pre-bebop "early" jazz. Now I have a good start on Armstrong, Bechet, Basie, Ellington, Beiderbecke, Eldridge, Hawkins, James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, etc. Gunther Schuller's Early Jazz, plus some very helpful suggestions from fellow board members helped make it easier to appreciate and understand. I have also found that having at least a basic familiarity with the earlier stuff helps me get even more enjoyment out of the "later" music in my collection.
