  1. Not if you're a Verizon Wireless US customer, and have a newer phone. They have purposely disabled the ability to transfer files (mp3, jpg, etc) to some phones via Bluetooth or USB connections. You have to use their network to do this, and of course, they charge for that. But, I've heard () there are ways around these restrictions. My phone is on vibrate most of the time (or OFF), so ringtones don't matter much to me.
  2. I think he would do a great rendition of "The Final Countdown". I bet he'll do it for you if you ask...
  3. Cool idea for a thread. But I'm not reading it. I hate you guys. I'm done buying CDs for awhile!!!
  4. The first time I read this thread (and looked at the album covers page), I was thinking you had written "I've previously owned more of those covers than I choose to disclose.".
  5. Hard Talk (Enja, 1974) and One-Upmanship (Enja, 1977) are both excellent. "The Seagulls of Kristiansund" is sublime; an achingly beautiful piece of music. Another favorite of mine is Mal Waldron with the Steve Lacy Quintet, recorded in 1972 in Paris, and available in the (limited edition) Free-America series. There's a Steve Lacy discography here, and it shows the following with Waldron: Reflections (1958) Journey Without End (1971) Mal Waldron with the Steve Lacy Quintet (1972) Hard Talk (1974) One-Upmanship (1977) Moods (1978) Snake-Out (1981) Herbe De L'oubli (1981) Let's Call This (1981) Sempre Amore (1986) Live at Sweet Basil (1987) Flakes: Tiziana Simona (1988) Hot House (1990) Let's Call This (1993) Live at Dreher, Paris (1981) I Remember Thelonious (1992) Communique (1994) I found the 13-year gap (between '58 and '71) interesting -- I wonder if there is any significance to that, or if their paths just crossed again in the early 70's. It appears that some of the above recordings may overlap others, so any help sorting that out would be appreciated.
  6. What's the name of a good one? Check out Dension. I have the "iceLink Plus", but it looks like the "dICE" is a newer product. There's also a ton of information about iPod adapters here: Logjam iPod Interfaces Forum.
  7. There are also a number of after-market iPod adapters that plug directly into the factory stereo system on newer cars. I bought one for my Honda Accord, and have been pretty happy with it. Since it's a "direct" connection, the sound is much better than the FM transmitter or cassette options. Additionally, the device I have also charges the iPod and allows me to control it with the buttons on the factory stereo and the steering wheel. It doesn't show the artist/song info on the car's display, but I believe that there are some car stereos (in BWMs, for instance) that do support that feature. A prediction: you'll have the 30 GB (or larger) model within 3 months!
  8. 0, but soon to be 32!
  9. Where is everybody staying? Any tips on accomodations -- location, price, etc.? During the Chicago blues fest, a friend of mine always stays at the Ohio House Hotel on La Salle. Brings his bike, and just rides to wherever the music was that day. Says the rooms were small, clean, and (relatively) affordable.
  10. Happy Birthday, fasstrack! I've been meaning to tell you that we (my family and I) saw you a few years back on your tour of West Michigan. The "New York All-Star Ensemble", if I remember correctly, at a park in Grand Haven. We all enjoyed it, even my teenage kids who think that jazz is old-folks music.
  11. Just received my shipping confirmation -- all 32 titles I ordered are (supposedly) on their way.
  12. The Origins of the Urban Crisis : Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit - Thomas Sugrue. An eye-opener, to say the least. Recently finished Mr. Litweiler's The Freedom Principle: Jazz After 1958. Combined with re-reading sections of Mr. Kart's Jazz in Search of Itself, I feel like I know much more about the music that has become so important to me in the last five years. Thank you, gentlemen!
  13. Kevin, My condolences. That is a very moving remembrance. You were very blessed to have such a loving, involved father. Your words make me appreciate how much my own father has given me, and also how important my job is as a father to my son (and daughter). -- Mark
  14. Yup. #5570 checking in, no shipping confirmation or tracking number yet.
  15. Me, too. Order was placed Wednesday (late afternoon), nothing other than the initial confirmation.
  16. I think you're wrong. Hell, I hope you're wrong. I believe there's a small (but growing) community of younger people that do care about the music. Perhaps I'm naive, but I firmly believe that the music will take care of itself. Us "older" people (by definition!) will not understand when, where, how, and why -- but that's the beauty of it. You're sounding like an old fart, Sangrey.
  17. I remember my dad playing Brubeck, Cannonball, Ramsey Lewis, and Getz when I was young. A lot of Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert, too. His tastes have mellowed quite a bit over the years -- the Rippingtons and Spyro Gyra are now representative. I recently loaned him Herbie's "Maiden Voyage" and "Empyrean Isles". He said it was interesting, but there was "too much going on". Good thing I didn't loan him my copy of Ascension!
  18. I thought it was kinda stupid overall, but there were some pretty funny moments. Catherine Keener was the highlight for me. The actress that played Carell's boss was pretty damn funny, too.
  19. Just finished grilling three whole chickens, at the same time. We've got a whole bunch of family arriving shortly... Pilsner Urquell in the fridge here, too. Forgot to put some fruit in it, though.
  20. Absolutely NOTHING, other than the initial order confirmation, #5570.
  21. We interrupt this program to make the following important public service announcement: This thread is rapidly approaching 3000 views, most of which were in the last 36 hours. You guys need help!!! We now return to the regularly scheduled programming...
  22. Many places here in Michigan have Bell's Oberon Ale on tap. It's available mainly during the summer, and according to their website, is "an American wheat ale brewed with Saaz hops. Spicy and fruity, Oberon is the color and scent of a summer afternoon." It's a good beer, but smelling like a "summer afternoon" may not always be such a good thing! I've only been to one place (a small, unpretentious neighboorhood bar) that doesn't put a slice of orange in that beer. Those "Cherry Lambic" beers taste like Nyquil to me. Yuck. I once had a Jalapeno flavored beer, in Reno, Nevada. Not as bad as it sounds.
  23. Seems like every time I order a beer lately, it now automatically comes with some sort of fruit, usually an orange. Of course, limes are popular in Corona, but I usually don't drink Corona. I guess this is a summer time thing, but it still annoys me. FRUIT DOESN'T BELONG IN BEER!! Your opinions on this important matter are hereby solicited...
  24. Good luck with that one! (we'll save you a place in the dog house, too. just don't forget to bring the beer!)
  25. Not sure how I'm going to tell Ann. Save room in the dog house for me. I (delicately) brought up the subject earlier this afternoon, and she made me a "deal": I could buy 30 as long as I don't buy any more CDs until Jan 1, 2007. (she didn't say anything about vinyl, though... )
