Big Al, you crack me up!! B3-er's "utter musical hilarity" comment pretty much sums it up for me. I *was* a Styx fan, back when I was 15. Pieces of Eight and Grand Illusion still bring back memories to this day. BUT, I did grow out of it eventually. I started to realize how bad they were around the time of Paradise Theater, and that Kilroy nonsense just confirmed it. "Simplistic and juvenile": exactly! Sorry deus62, in this case, this is not just someone's subjective opinion. The only reasonable debate about this band is the *degree* of sucktitude -- do they suck just a little, or a whole lot?? I say they suck just a little, but only because I'm scared that they might come kick my ass:

What is or was the best photo of a jazz musician?
Uncle Skid replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I really like photos of Art Blakey, especially this one: -
...MUST BUY MORE WARNE MARSH, VON FREEMAN, ROSCOE MITCHELL, ART ENSEMBLE.... B-)

I should have added that obviously, it wasn't just Chuck that has turned me on to some outstanding music -- I've had many great recommendations from other board members here. In fact, Dan found a great Cedar Walton disk for me a while back! Isn't this a great place, deleted threads, wynton trolls, and political squabbling overlooked, of course? B-)

I don't recall this question being asked recently, either. I consider myself fairly adventurous at this point -- I look at it this way: if I hadn't started listening to jazz 101 (Miles, Coltrane, etc), I'd still be listening to "progressive alt-rock", whatever the hell that is. The rewards of starting down the jazz path have been so great, that I don't want to confine myself to any specific period or style. I'm lucky enough to live only 20 minutes away from Chuck, and he has expanded my musical horizons much further than I had ever imagined possible. As I'm still relatively new to all of this, maybe I will eventually fall into a more predictable pattern. I really don't know at this point, and that's what keeps it interesting! B-)

Zoo tempts gay penguins to go straight
Uncle Skid replied to Phil Meloy's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, since I live in one of those uptight states that passed a gay-marriage ban, I hereby officially reserve the Swedish Bikini Team for all board members who are Michigan residents! Chuck, Jim, Joe, Randy, Bill, and Greg, please let me know where to send yours! * and don't worry Paul (conn), you live close enough to Michigan, so we won't forget about you! -
I'll always remember the first time I heard The Sermon. Completely blew me away, never had heard anything quite like it before. B-)

Oh yeah, well I had three.... Nevermind, I don't even have the Hill set, but I want one real bad. The thought of buying one on Ebay makes me want to cry like a little girl.

Way back when I was in college, my roommates and I would get drunk and practice random acts of anti-vandalism. We'd be walking back from parties on campus and do crazy things like fix knocked over signs, pick up litter, help people fix flat tires, and other wild and crazy stuff like that. We felt that, in a very small way, it might counter some of the insanity that went on elsewhere. I ran with a pretty crazy crowd, huh???

I think this whole controversy is just a little silly. If someone who has never posted here wants to offer something for sale, what's the big deal? I know it may be considered rude, but I don't think we need a "mininum post count" rule. Maybe a minimum post count "suggestion" instead? The chances of me buying anything from a first-time poster is very small. I'd bet that is true for many others as well. People that have been around for a long time and contribute to other discussions on the board will always have an advantage over newbies when offering something for sale.

Andrew Hill Select now on the Mosaic Website!!!!!
Uncle Skid replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The first song of those samples (The Dance) is the *entire* song -- all 5:32 of it!! It looks like that is the case for all three. Those are some serious "audio clips"!!!! B-) B-) -
If I count only my jazz CDs, I am currently the low man on the totem pole (251-500). This can only mean ONE THING!!! I'll get right on it!!

When did you first discover Mosaic?
Uncle Skid replied to bebopbob's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
About a year ago or so, right here on this very forum! In fact, my first purchase was the Blue Mitchell set, right before it went OOP. I got caught up in all of the LAST CHANCE frenzy around here, and I'm glad I did! I also bought the T/K/M and Morgan/Shorter sets right before they were gone, too. I envy you guys you have been at it for awhile. I just can't imagine how cool it was to be able to order the Hill, Morgan, McLean, Rivers, Mingus and Blakey sets directly from Mosaic at reasonable prices! On the other hand, if all these sets were still easily available, I'd probably be broke!! -
Man, I really wish I could go. It's a little over 2 1/2 hours from here to Ann Arbor (~170 miles), but this weekend just didn't work out. We've had a sick kid here the last two weeks, so I need to stay close to home as much as possible. I've mentioned this to Upright Bill, but I'm not sure what he's planning. He's having one of those "Texas Hold-em" tournaments at his house this weekend, but I think that is Friday night. I won't be going to that either -- I already went once before, and made my donation....

No Aldo Nova, but I think they might have some Loverboy!!! If Joe G isn't a member already, I'm sure he will be soon! Looks like they have a whole bunch of Rush CDs, too.

B-) B-) B-) me too me too me too me too!!!!! My Seven Steps box also arrived today! I finally gave in and joined a week ago, at the $5.99 price. I figured the $4.99 deal is probably long gone, and if it did come back, I could try the email thing mentioned earlier in this thread. The box set, plus the first item in my queue (Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus) shipped one day after ordering, and both arrived today with no screw-ups. Aw Yeah!!

NE Blizzard of 2005 (Part I?)
Uncle Skid replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I just came in from doing my driveway -- there was almost a foot of new snow, all since yesterday evening. Not that it did any good, as it will probably be awhile before the plows come by on the street. -

I'm pretty sure you can't select your encoding rate at EMusic. Subscribers just have to take whatever EMusic has already put up, unless they "re-encode" at a higher (or variable) rate, and then upload the new files. Incidentally, I just came across this article: Understanding Audio Compression: MP3, WMA, Ogg, and More. It includes an interesting discussion of MP3 encoding rates: MP3s are convenient, but they'll never be as good as having the original CD.
