As Christmas approaches, it's getting time to make up my mind. Wirecutter hasn't said anything new about this in the past six months. The Rega RP1 is only $50 more than the Pro-Ject Carbon, but Wirecutter says that the RP1 "has more rumble noise present...than the Carbon." http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-turntable/ Does anyone have an opinion of what might be one step up from the Rega RP1?

I agree with Jim that a "cogent concept" is best. I suppose the most common cogent concept is...Everything Artist X recorded for Label Y between the years A and B. I think that price is important. IMO, the early Mosaics were well worth their prices, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays, all three of the majors are releasing box sets of five albums from the '60s and '70s for $17-18 including shipping. That may not qualify for a "great" box set, but you can't go wrong with that. I am happy to hear the alternate takes, but a box with only the master takes is usually fine with me. Does anyone remember the four Chet in Paris CDs released in the late '80s? There were four CDs, each sold separately. The first three were the master takes, and the fourth had only the alternate takes. To me, that's the way to do it.

Wasn't trad jazz more like a fad? I think some of its musicians were influential, not so much trad jazz itself (Ken Colyer also comes to mind). Its heyday was short-lived if I remember correctly (late 1950s-early 1960s). By the way, wasn't Alexis Korner more into blues? Yes, but he played guitar in Barber's band. Cyril Davies was in that band, too. And Korner had a wide appreciation of blues which included Charles Mingus and Jimmy Smith, as well as Muddy Waters and Champion Jack Dupree. I used to have a Korner album in which they played 'Haitian fight song' and 'Back at the chicken shack'. And I have a vivid recollection of one Saturday night (1962) at the Ealing R&B club (which was Korner's regular gig) in which Long John Baldry and Mick Jagger sat in and duetted on Ray Charles' 'I got a woman'. Oh, Korner also made an EP for Topic (a British folk music label) with Davy Graham - '3/4 AD' - one track of which was later appropriated by Simon & Garfunkel. MG Thanks to MG for finding this thread for me. I think I recall another thread on which I commented on the Korner album with Haitian Fight Song and Back at the Chicken Shack. Anyway, I bought a cutout of the American release of this album, I think in the early '80s. LOL! Actually Chuck, my name has been in print once! It was the front page headline of the Seattle Times. I'm pretty sure that it was in January, either 1961 or 1962. The story went that after a number of failed attempts, the Soviets put up the first lunar orbiting module. And the headline read... RUSS MOON LAUNCH SUCCESSFUL
