  7. Happy Birthday 2010 Michel!
  8. Edmonton made a $400K profit last year. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edmonton/2010/02/23/13000971-qmi.html ***** Winnipeg has released Casey Bramlet, leaving newly signed Stephen Jyles as their only QB with any game experience. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Winnipeg/2010/02/23/13005026.html
  9. Eddie Davis retired today. That means that Anthony Calvillo is the last player left to have played for an American team. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/roughriders-eddie-davis-retires/article1481263/
  10. So who would buy the catalogue from Citibank? Concord?
  11. I confess to having second thoughts on the current state of copyright law. I am active at mobileread.com, which was recommended to me by clave/seeline. It is devoted to eBooks and eBook readers. There is always plenty of discussion about copyright laws. I have no objection whatever to an artist (whether author or musician) making all the money he can from his work (whether book or recording). I have always felt that it is immoral to violate copyright for one's own personal enjoyment, depriving the artist of his compensation. However, once the artist is dead, it is now not clear to me that his heirs have any moral claim to deprive the public of the art. I am not a believer in, as the lawyers say, the hand ruling from the grave. In this case, I assume that Miles did not authorize the recording of these public performances. But they were made anyway, to no detriment to Miles. Now that he is dead, I see no reason why the public should not have the opportunity to hear and enjoy (or not) the art.
  12. I was thinking of him yesterday. All the US radio stations seem to have forgotten that Rivers had the original hit of By the Time I Get to Phoenix. Glen Campbell's cover was a bigger hit, and that's the one that history seems to remember. Phoenix was Rivers' first slow hit. His previous hits were up-tempo, recorded at the Whiskey a Go Go, hair combed back. His Album Changes had slow studio recorded songs with his hiar combed forward.
  13. Lala: Richie Kamuca & Bill Holman - West Coast Jazz in Hifi Highly recommended.
  14. I was given a copy of a contemporary jazz album called Urban Vacation by Norwegian saxophonist Terje Lie. It's a lot better than most of the c jazz I hear on Sirius. Jeff Lorber co-produced the album and plays keyboards and guitar. The whole thing reminds me a lot of fairly late Klaus Doldinger's Passport. You can hear it for yourself at lala: http://www.lala.com/#album/1657606137893625867/Terje_Lie/Urban_Vacation
  15. Seattle has signed Ricky Foley. He led the league in sacks and tackles with BC last year, and won the Most Outstanding Canadian Award. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/seahawks-sign-ricky-foley/article1478732/
  16. Winnipeg has signed Stephen Jyles and released Michael Bishop. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/blue-bombers-sign-quarterback-jyles/article1478648/ ***** Hamilton has signed Jason Jimenez, and released Dan Goodspeed to avoid paying him a bonus. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/tiger-cats-sign-veteran-offensive-lineman-jimenez/article1478594/
  17. I don't know the pianist Jimmy Jones, but I know the singer who had a hit with Handy Man. In 1974 the Montreal Alouettes had a quarterback named Jimmy Jones. On the last play of the Grey Cup game, he fumbled the snap on the field goal attempt that would have won the game, and the kick went wide.
  18. Hamilton has signed Sandro DeAngelis and released Nick Setta. DeAngelis is statistically the most accurate kicker in league history. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/ticats-sign-kicker-deangelis/article1477305/ ***** The Argos released Stephen Reaves, the only QB left on their roster. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/argos-release-last-quarterback-on-roster/article1477358/
  19. Considering that the Argos were by far the worst team in the league last year, you could expect changes to be made. They have released Kerry Joseph, Cody Pickett, Zeke Moreno and Jordan Younger. No word yet on who they hope will be their quarterback this year. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/kerry-joseph-released/article1476182/
  20. Happy Birthday Mike! In your honor, I'll put on some Cal Tjader!
  21. Stephen Jyles' agent has said that he expects him to soon sign with Winnipeg. Will the Bombers keep Michael Bishop? http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Winnipeg/2010/02/18/12938151-qmi.html
  22. Dale Hawkins has died. I didn't know that he produced Hey! Baby and Western Union. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-dale-hawkins16-2010feb16,0,6454798.story
  23. I'm a huge fan of Mose's, but I didn't think his last two (Mose Chronicles vol. 1 and 2) were very good. I hope this new one is up to par.
  24. Happy Birthday 2010 Hans!
