  1. I'm surprised that they would issue a 35-disc set this time of year. Wouldn't you think they would do it for Christmas instead, when people spend the big bucks?
  2. Happy Birthday 2010 Sundog!
  3. I was there for that! I was a freshman in college in DC, and I figured that a Presidential Inauguration was something historical that one should attend if one is in town, so I went. It was a cold, damp day, and I don't remember anything he said. Having gone once, I won't be going to another Inauguration.
  4. After being out of pro ball for seven (!) years, OJ Santiago has decided to try to make a comeback with the Alouettes. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Montreal/2010/05/17/13986646.html ***** John Comiskey has retired due to a knee injury. Dan Comiskey has come out of (one-year) retirement to replace him with the Stampeders. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Calgary/2010/05/19/14004921.html
  5. Happy Birthday B3-er! Hope you're enjoying your tour!
  6. It was announced today that the Texas Rangers will be sold to a Pittsburgh attorney. Am I right, isn't that good news to Big Al?
  7. I can think of Shelly Berman. Mort Sahl? Was The First Family on Verve? Who else?
  8. My copy of Stuttgart arrived today, and I put on Disc 1 right away, and loved it. Two hours later, I put it on again. One thing that struck me was that this is now the fourth Widow's Taste concert release, and in all of them the bands are terrific. It's not just Art Pepper. You don't have to be an Art Pepper fan to enjoy these discs. Back in the 60s, I respected Herbie Mann and Miles Davis for hiring young guys who were better than they were. (In rock, Spencer Davis did the same thing.) I think that Art should be given credit for finding and hiring such talented jazz musicians.
  9. My favorite Grant Green cover was the photo of the street signs at the corner of Grant and Green in San Francisco.
  10. It sounds like his last roommate felt the need to move to another city to get away from him!
  11. I had no fine arts classes when I was in high school. Considering how important music was to all of us then (the mid-60s), I'm sure that we all would have gotten something out of it.
  12. Happy Birthday Chuck!
  13. Sure you do. It was last week. Last week's sales were the worst for CDs since 1991. Soundscan says that only 5.3 million CDs were sold. Justin Bieber was the lucky guy who sold 60,000. Carole King and James Taylor have a new album together which came in at #6 with 44,000. http://www.prefixmag.com/news/this-weeks-cd-sales-worst-since-1991/40633/
  14. I can think of only one person, a woman, who fit the OP's description. She did not have a large record collection, and she had a dozen or so (maybe fewer) jazz albums. So I agree with the tenor of the OP. Maybe my observation is that people who are a little into music (most people) are not into jazz. And people who are into non-jazz music a lot are not into jazz at all, except for those whose favorite music is jazz.
  15. Maybe three years ago I had a convergence of a number of things. BMG/Your Music stopped offering a ton of stuff I wanted. My collection of unopened CDs grew to a mile high. I ran out of money. Also, I found that I had a few albums of just about everybody I was interested in. When you listen to an album only once or twice a year, that is not too much different from getting a new one. I found that I was spending my time listening to what I had already opened instead of hungering for something new. I checked choice #1, but if three years is a long time, then I should have checked choice #3.
  16. Lala: Hot Club of Detroit - Night Town Cal Tjader - Tjader Plays Tjazz
  17. Jim Popp is considering NFL offers. His house in Montreal is up for sale. If there has been a better player personnel guy than Popp in the history of the CFL, I'm unaware of him. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/popp-weighing-nfl-offers/article1569609/
  18. Paul, the US Constitution specifically refers to copyright and the limited period of time that it should exist. The idea is that works of art should be available to the public. That makes it different in the US from typical family assets.
  19. Believe it or not, JaMarcus Russell is on the Ticats' neg list. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/ticats-not-interested-in-jamarcus-russell/article1565631/
  20. The Lord has blessed me. The set I was most reluctant to part with, the Holman Russo, didn't sell.
  21. I note how few of the selected albums are on labels I've heard of.
  22. Thanks, Clifford. I've still got two more to go which end tomorrow, and both are stuck on the minimum bid, so I don't expect either to reach the reserve price. I have an eleventh which I didn't put up because I only have ten boxes, so I guess that will go up next week.
