  1. I see that Doug Ramsey at the above link has some very nice things to say about Mike Fitzgerald, dated July 29. Does this maybe change your mind about blogs, Mike?
  2. Last night I finished Right Ho, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse. I enjoyed it, but recommend a collection of shorts stories called The Most of P.G. Wodehouse to anyone who hasn't tried him yet.
  3. I can see from the lack of response that nobody is interested in my two recommendations of Herbie Mann and Bobby Jaspar - Flute Souffle and Flute Flight. People, it's great music! You're missing out if you don't pick these up cheap! And let me recommend another that falls into the category of great music but not earth shattering: Charlie Byrd and Cal Tjader - Tambu. This was a jam session in '74 as I recall, playing jazz standards like Black Narcissus, Tereza My Love and My Cherie Amour. Great to relax by.
  4. I'm sorry to hear of your loss, Conrad. I believe that the suffering she endured will enable her to enjoy heaven that much more.
  5. Saddened to hear it. I saw him twice - in '68 with Brasil '66 and in '71 with Weather Report.
  6. Mike beat me to it. I was going to say that 52nd St. Theme would have been my guess for the first recording without Monk present (excepting I suppose Cootie Williams' recording of Round Midnight).
  7. Sad. Couw sent me a couple of his albums in a trade.
  8. I have a few albums that I bought an LP of, and later the CD. Richard "Groove" Holmes - Soul Message Richard "Groove" Holmes - Living Soul Mike Nock - In Out & Around Miles Davis - The Birth of the Cool Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (if you count getting the Miles/Coltrane box) Happy the Man - self titled Soft Machine - Third Soft Machine - self titled Soft Machine - Volume Two Manfred Mann Chapter Three - self titled Manfred Mann Chapter Three - Volume Two The Beach Boys - Christmas Album The Kingston Trio - The Last Month of the Year The Four Freshmen - Voices in Love The Four Freshmen - And Five Trombones The Kingston Trio - At Large The Kingston Trio - Here We Go Again Manfred Mann - The Manfred Mann Album Manfred Mann - The Five Faces of Manfred Mann Manfred Mann - My Little Red Book of Winners Manfred Mann - As Is Hey, that's more than I realized!
  9. Sad to hear it. Don't try to lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll!
  10. I'm so out of touch, I was thinking of Christina Applegate, who is now on Broadway.

    mike mandel...

Yes, he is/was blind. I saw him in Boston with Larry Coryell's group Foreplay which featured Steve Marcus in August of '72.
  12. I too enjoy this CD. I found it cheap at Borders in '99, and still listen to it once every couple of months.
  13. My favorite is Perfectly Frank. I saw him in the mid-90s in Atlanta, and I loved the show. He did the same bit of singing a song without amplification.
  14. Oh yeah, I have the Gunns also... forgot about them! Don't know why... I blew through most of those shows when I first got the sets for Christmas. Wish JOHNNY STACCATO would come out too. ← The episodes that I've seen have been much more film noir than I expected. I think I would like and recommend them even if they didn't have the famous music.
  15. I think that GMT is five hours ahead of Eastern, so that would make it 3 am. But we are on daylight savings time. Are you too there in England? If not, that would make it 2 am I think! Somebody help me out!
  16. About ten years ago my neighborhood Burger King in Tucker, GA, played jazz over the intercom. I remember well hearing Horace Silver's Song For My Father while I was having my morning coffee.
  17. That's interesting about the traffic guy! Sounds like a lot of work.
  18. Congratulations! What's a Traffic Coordinator?
  19. Thanks again for your suggestions. I decided to go with Time's Mirror. I'm listening to it now. I enjoy modern big band from time to time, and I'm glad I picked this up.
  20. Thanks, RonS! Do you recommend it?
  21. Happy Birthday Randy!
  22. Clandy, I'm glad you posted it. I wouldn't have known about it if you hadn't! Thanks!
  23. Ron, I have a lot of fondness for Charlie Byrd. I saw him in Pittsburgh the fall of '76, and it was a lot of fun to see such a great talent make it look easy. I'm not aware of the album you mention. In fact, all of his Concord albums flew below my radar when they came out. I vaguely remember his making some albums with two other guitarists, I think Herb Ellis was one. He made plenty of mainstream albums, but my favorites are his bossa nova ones. About 1970 I picked up a compilation called Guitar Artistry which was an ABC reissue of mainstream Riverside material. I also bought not too long after that a Milestone (Riverside) twofer of bossa nova albums, one album of which was reissued as an OJC. That was good, but he was playing with a string orchestra, which is not my ideal. I heard a similar album with strings on Columbia around 1968 which was OK but didn't excite me. I can highly recommend an album he did on Fantasy about 1974 with Cal Tjader called Tambu. That was reissued as an OJC, and I should have mentioned it on Chuck's OJC thread. Great music! EDIT to give props to Jazz Samba with Stan Getz! But everybody already knows about that one.
