  1. My favorite movies are The Third Man and Lover Come Back. Since neither won the Oscar, I would go with them. I've never taken the Oscars seriously. Too much politics and sentiment.
  2. Nate Dorward, you remind me that I already have the Miles Dig and Oleo sessions, as well as all of the Monk sessions. It looks like I'm right in the middle, having more than half the box already. That may be too much to justify buying the box, instead of just the two albums you mention. Thanks everyone for your input! You too, Chuck!
  3. You guys are too much! Don't think of my failure to open Worktime as procrastination. Think of it more like self-discipline!!!! Yeah, that's the ticket!
  4. If you haven't opened and loved Worktime, you're not worthy. Forget it. Chuck, I figure it's been so long I should sell it on eBay to an audiophile!
  5. I already own Saxophone Colossus, Tenor Madness and Plus Four on CD. I also years ago bought an LP of Worktime which I haven't opened yet. Is that all of the best music on the Rollins Prestige box? Would it be worthwhile for me to spend a little bit at Your Music for the box, or do I already have just about everything worth having? I'm not a completist. Just because there is something available in the box doesn't move me to want it. Your suggestions are appreciated!
  6. Well, he said that everyone knows it, not that they like it, so I'm going to guess Feelings. (My first thought too was Happy Birthday!) My second guess is The Star Spangled Banner, and my third is God Save the Queen.
  7. Don Ellis Orchestra - Live at Monterey! Richard "Groove" Holmes - Living Soul Thelonious Monk - Monk In Action Thelonious Monk - Orchestra at Town Hall Buddy Rich Orchestra - Swinging New Big Band Van Morrison and Georgie Fame - How Long Has This Been Going On Mose Allison - Mose Alive
  8. Gag me with a spoon!!!!!
  9. When Sunny Gets Blue. My favorite is Kenny Rankin's.
  10. Congrats Soul Stream!
  11. I just got on with no problems.
  12. Light Blue!
  13. I like compilations, particularly ones of ballads. Compilations are often available cheap, which allows me to pick up something extra without taking it too seriously. I'm listening to a Lionel Hampton best of right now. I had a good hunch that I would not likely buy more than one of his CDs, so I just picked up this one. Makes sense to me!
  14. I read an interesting story about that cover. When Fantasy decided to re-release that album as an LP in the 80s, it was unable to find any artwork! Not only could it not find its original artwork, it couldn't find a copy of the album either. After it was released on LP but before the time came for the CD to be released, a copy of the album turned up, and they used a photo of its cover for the CD.
  15. Years ago I read a crime novel by Elmore Leonard that could have been The Switch, I can't remember for sure. Anyway, the bad guys throughout the story were listening to Groove Holmes tapes.
  16. I voted for Stick Up. Now I'm going to go over to Your Music to see what they have available.
  17. Mike, that was a different one. And while I'm at it, I have the mid-60s cover of the Prestige Gerry Mulligan album with Mulligan's Too on it. Can't think of the name right now. The OJC has what I assume is the original cover. But the Mulligan record didn't come with the cover! Instead, they had inserted Soultrane by mistake. Save your applause, I would have preferred the Mulligan! EDIT 2/21: The Mulligan OJC title is Mulligan Plays Mulligan. I still can't remember the title of the 60s version, except that that wasn't it. I never entered it into my database because the record didn't come with it!
  18. Rather than refuse to play there again, I would raise my fee $100. That would take care of your extra expenses and give you the raise you deserve. If he decides not to pay the new rate, you will never play there again, so you are back where you started except that you haven't had an argument with somebody in the business.
  19. Three years is a long time to listen to music! Thirty-six months. I got an Aiwa in November from Best Buy for about $100. So far I'm happy with it. Installation is another fifty bucks.
  20. I remember in the late 60s Prestige put a contemporary photo of Sonny Rollins on the cover of Saxophone Colossus.
  21. I thought this group would be more opinionated regarding Dave Douglas! LOL OK, I'll put Strange Liberation in my queue. Thanks for your suggestions.
  22. I have only one Dave Douglas album, Soul On Soul. I like most of it, and I've been thinking that it's time to consider getting another one of his. I went to Your Music, and they have three: A Thousand Evenings Freak In Strange Liberation Does anyone recommend one of these more than the others?

    Tony Coe

My recollection is that I liked the things I heard that he did with Nucleus.
  24. Che and Tjobbe, how would you rate Strange Place for Snow?
  25. Thanks for your input. Interesting disagreement! For $4.99 I might try anything, so I'm going to put this one on the bottom of my queue, and if nothing looks better before its time comes I'll get it.
