I like not love Blues Bag. The sound isn't great-especially percussion-and I still prefer Hark to this one but I'm glad I have it.

I just downloaded EAC and could use some advice on how to best use it.

agree with Brad. An interesting film until the shift to Africa, I couldn't see the connection. The Son House footage was fabulous though so no real complaints so far. Corey Harris does a nice job overall. I also heard tonight's episode is ridiculous in parts but I'll tune in and judge for myself.

allmusic dot com is always a good starting to at least get a bio of an artist and discography. of course their recs pale in the face of the knowledge pool here

I've also used American Digital and found them friendly and helpful though their shipping charges are high so you need to place a sizable order ($100 or more) to make it worthwhile. They recommended unbranded taiyo yuden blanks as being as reliable as mitsui and much cheaper. They seem to work fine in my PC, car, and other cd players.

I've been listening for a few weeks now and I generally agree with GA Russell. Wilson was able to recruit a litany of jazz all stars but some are past their prime and some should have been featured more (no solo for Jon Faddis). Kenny Barron is terrific especially on the opening selection though I would have preferred to hear any number of lesser played miles than milestones-a great tune but too many versions are out there already. The ensemble playing sounds a bit muted at times perhaps due to limited rehearsal time?? The Monterey theme is a fine version, arguably the highlight. That said, it's great to have a new Gerald Wilson recording and all big band fans should pick this one up and buy the Mosaic if you don't have it already.

ordered it last night from half dot comew for $8. I'll post some comments after a few listens

I'd stick with the telarchive twofers. They can be found inexpensively at half dot com or ebay and maintain a high level of quality. Garner was an amazing player-so versatile but always maintaining his distinctive style. IMO, Garner deserves consideration at the very top tier of pianists right along with Tatum, Hines, etc.

Any fans of the guitar should run not walk to get this one. There was and will never be another player like Roy. Tom Principato, a pretty fair guitarist in his own right, put this out on his own label. tomprincipato dot com

I listen to Tatum. I listen to Garner. I listen to Tatum. I listen to Garner..... All the Telarc Garner twofers can be found inexpensively.

Wayne Shorter's latest Alegria has to be on the list of the best without question

I still think he'a great player but I'm less than impressed with Trumpet Evolution especially as he rerecords material-Joy Spring, etc-which he's already covered. Still, how many current trumpet players would even attempt to perform so many different styles? Hot House remains my favorite release of his.

Summer 2003 vacation thread

we've been doing a lot home renovations as I can see no better way to invest our money these days coupled with my uncertain work schedule (I'm an IT contractor and its been pretty rough for the past year or so) has limited our travel but a getaway to the blue ridge of Virginia over the 4th and a week somewhere-beach or mountains-over Labor day with a few weekends away is about it for the summer. no complaints as we've had some great trips over the years and I'm happy to be alive and well (and listening to Erroll Garner as I type this). -
I just picked up complete Group masterpieces so I'd thought I would try to generate some discussion about this legend. How does he rate with all other pianists? If he's not the best, who is? Any opinions on this box set?

I really like Arturo and consider him a major player these days. I just found out he will be at The Birchmere (good club but not known for jazz) in August and I will be there. I've been telling myself for years I have to catch this guy live sometime. I was listening to Hot House the other day-a killer album of latin big band jazz. I have his new cd-Trumpet Evolution- coming soon. Any posters share my enthusiasm for this artist?

I was listening to it yesterday and my wife kept saying this is really good. I've noticed each time I listen to it I hear a new element.

I like the way the band avoided that over the top playing that many b3 players think is the ultimate. Laid back and a good grove always work. Joe's guitar work is especially fine; however there are no slackers here. Production is outstanding for a small budget (I guess) cd. Hope you guys can come to DC sometime. maybe Bertrand can sponsor a show

Great discussion, but that's par for the course here. Good to see all the old BNBB posters resurfacing. I've been into a heavy rotation of mid 60s Miles lately so playing this album was a natural progression. I've always liked BM more so than HW. I remember seeing these guys right after the jaco era and being so impressed with Wayne's playing especially on soprano. Only certain players can make synths work in jazz. Zawinul is one, Corea another. Good choice for AOW.

I'm just really listening to this period for the first time so I'm not gonna vote yet but I will. If anyone would care to share some of the boots with me, email or PM me. I have a few things to trade or could do B&P

I don't have Footprints yet but it's on the list. Wayne is on a roll. Hope he comes through DC again.

got it today. this is a tremendous cd. There's a lot going on here and I will need time to fully absorb it all but I can tell everyone one thing-Wayne Shorter plays as well as he ever has on this recording. Go get this one asap
